43. History of the Gulag
After a long voyage of nearly half a day, Leo and others came to Moscow, which was shrouded in night.
Walking out of Sheremetyevo International Airport, the cold air hits your face like a knife, making you feel a kind of pain.
Luckily, they had already changed into a chunky outfit in the cabin, a warm tweed coat, and a stuffed fur hat with a Moscow feel.
"What's next?"
Sitting in the luxury limousine that made a special pick-up trip to the airport, Diggle finally couldn't hold back the anxiety in his heart.
He glanced inside the car to make sure he wasn't overheard.
The driver's and passenger seats in the carriage are separated, and a thick soundproof panel rises in the middle to separate the space between the front and rear, so that they cannot hear each other's speech.
If communication is required, an internal intercom and bell can be used to ensure that customer conversations are private.
The spacious cabin is arranged with circular seats, a light bar on the side, and a variable light like a starry sky on the roof.
An LCD TV hangs from the soundproof panel, and there are hi-fi speakers on both sides, almost like a miniature small office.
"You say that Leila lost contact in Moscow, what is her mission? Is it possible to be targeted by the KGB, or in which safe house? β
It seems that Diggle knows the process of the Tianyan Society very well, and the questions raised are all very critical.
The black man, who retired from the army and became an employee of a private security company, met Leila Michaels while serving in Afghanistan and married after returning home.
It's a pity that neither of them knows how to maintain their marriage, and for them, the dangerous battlefield filled with gunsmoke may be easier than the trivial life of firewood, rice, oil and salt.
After the divorce, Leila chose to join the Sky Eye Society and became a special agent, while Diggle continued to travel overseas until she officially retired.
"I'm sorry, Leila Michaels' mission involves the secrets within the Sky Eye Society, and you don't have permission to know about it for the time being. As for the safe house, which can be ruled out, she has already been absent from two regular phone calls. β
Leo handed Felicity a glass of sparkling wine, and the genius hacker was visibly nervous and remained silent from the moment he got off the plane.
"If it is targeted by the KGB, then Leila Michaels is basically equivalent to death...... I think it's more likely that the NSA will be provoked by some accident. β
After analyzing some of the existing possibilities, Leo did not say more, and the specific situation could only be determined after obtaining more information.
He lifted the curtain that covered the car window and admired Moscow at night.
The capital of this forest, hidden in a sea of green, looks quiet and beautiful.
They didn't say anything until they arrived at their destination, which was the national luxury hotel where they were staying.
Entering the luxurious suite, Leo took off his tweed coat and called Felicity and Diggle together.
"I'm going out to gather some information, you stay in the room."
Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, Leo overlooks the Kremlin, the "neighbor" just across the street.
White Industries was founded in 1940 when his grandfather, Fred White, developed a new type of oil extraction technology, but was sidelined by his peers.
Rival oil companies, in collusion with government officials, have enumerated 44 regulations to prohibit the use of this method in production.
In desperation, Fred had no choice but to run away to the Soviet Union, which had not yet collapsed, and instead became Stalin's guest.
After the agreement was reached, Fred helped the Stalin government build fifteen modern crude oil refineries, amassing a huge fortune that did not return to the United States until decades later.
To put it bluntly, the entire modern oil industry in the Soviet Union was built by this grandfather of Leo.
Even after the collapse of the great Red Empire, the White family still retained a lot of connections here.
Two hours later, Leo returned to his luxurious suite with a vodka squeeze.
If you want to make friends with Russians, in addition to drinking, you are fighting.
Leo apparently chose the former, pouring tons and tons of vodka for an unknown amount of vodka, and finally got a message from Leila Michaels from an intelligence broker belonging to the Sontsevo Brotherhood.
"She's being held in the Gulag prison, and here's the picture that was taken."
Seeing that Leo was stumbling a little, Felicity hurriedly did his duty as a personal assistant and handed over a glass of water.
"Gulag prison?"
Diggle exclaimed, his swarthy face solemn.
It was a worse hell than the Nazi concentration camp!
As early as the Tsarist period, the exile of prisoners to Siberia in harsh conditions was a traditional punishment of the Russian government.
After the establishment of the Soviet Union, it also inherited this tradition of Tsarist Russia, using forced labor as a means of suppressing opponents and punishing criminals.
In 1918, the first Gulag labor camp was established in the Soviet Union.
From then on, those who had committed minor crimes, the White prisoners of war in the civil war, officials accused of embezzlement and bribery, political opponents, dissidents, and those who made jokes about the Soviet government were all indiscriminately sent to the gulag labor camps.
According to statistics, a total of 14 million people were sent to the Gulag labor camps, and by the time the hundreds of camps were closed, nearly 1.5 million had died there, a brutality comparable to that of Auschwitz.
Today, the so-called Gulag prison is a mecca for Russian gangsters.
"That's right, supposedly because during the mission, there was some conflict with a drug lord in Moscow, and then he was thrown into the Gulag prison."
Leo finished drinking a glass of water, and his drunken eyes gradually cleared up.
He drank down four or five Russian men in a row, and this kind of record is amazing enough.
"So this rescue mission, Felicity is the backup, and you are responsible for liaising with the outside world."
Leo leaned against the head of the bed, rubbing his fingers into his eyebrows, and said softly, "I went deep into the Gulag prison, found Leila Michaels, and then brought her out." β
"No way!"
Diggle refused the offer without thinking about it, although he was not used to looking at the young man in front of him, but he would not sit idly by and watch the other party enter the prison and risk it.
Gulag Prison, maybe Felicity didn't know what it was, but Digger knew it.
It is home to the most vicious violent elements, cold-blooded criminals with no humanity, and a large number of gangster thugs.
Most of the people who were able to live in the cells of the Gulag prison had blood on their hands, and many of the godfathers of the Russian gangsters came out of that prison.
Otherwise, how can it be called the "Holy Land of the Underworld"!
"If someone has to go in, it's me!"
Diggle said in a deep voice.
He knew the risks, but Leila was his wifeβeven if they weren't husband and wife in the legal sense, the deep bond wouldn't go away.
"I said did you make a mistake......
The corners of Leo's mouth went up, provoking a faint smile, "The reason why I want to go to the Gulag myself is not out of kindness or goodwill, but just to complete the task more easily. β
"Maybe for outsiders, it's a nightmare, it's hell! But in my eyes, going to the Gulag prison is like going home, and the villains and murderers in it all speak nicely, no different from the docile sheep. β
At this moment, Leo quietly removed the gentle mask, revealing a slight dark aura.
The arrogant smile, disdainful tone, and high-minded attitude made Diggle, who had experienced many wars, inexplicably palpitate.
It seems that the young man in front of him who is in an open suit and spews alcohol is the most feared thug!
