Chapter 8: An Unexpected Judgment Day
Osk and a few people rushed to the Coldridge Mountain overnight, Hudson, Huang Jie, Bertha, and Cavlyn were on a mission, and soon after arriving, they went to the mission location.
Only Augustus and Pinkerton stayed at the town inn at the foot of the hill, and they had only rested for a few hours, and when it was dawn, they had to hurry, so Pinkerton set out first to take his place at the viewing platform.
Augustus put on his clothes, and instead of his usual clothes, he put on a black robe with a hood, which he pulled over his head, and hurried to the stables, found a horse, and rode to the place of execution.
The muddy streets were crowded with people, and the startled citizens ran away to make way for Augustus, waving their fists at him or glaring at him with wide eyes under the brim of their hats. Augustus galloped past and ran towards the place where the crowd had become dense, and as the hanging was about to begin, the onlookers had gathered.
Soon he came to the stands, Augustus tied his horse, and with the help of Octavia's observational ability, he quickly found his companion Pinkerton in the crowd, and he squeezed through the crowd and came to Pinkerton's side.
"What about the others?" Augustus asked.
"Hudson is on the eaves on the right," Pinkerton said, "Asker is in the crowd, and his men are hiding in the crowd, so for the time being I know those locations, and you'll have to find the rest." ”
"Okay," Augustus looked around, "then I'll go around." ”
On the gallows, the gallows is waiting for the next victim, and at the same time, many people are looking forward to today's entertainment. The square was surrounded by horses and carriages, and many people climbed into the carriage to get a better look: timid looking men, short women with worried faces and haggard faces, and dirty and scruffy children.
Some onlookers sat in the square, while others walked around: groups of women stood together whispering, men drinking ales or wine from their pouches. They all come to see Luna and Alice being tortured.
On one side of the square, a carriage with soldiers on both sides came, Augustus caught a glimpse of Luna and Alice inside, and a smiling Martin Cruise jumped out first, and then he dragged Luna out of the carriage and laughed at him, "You didn't think I'd miss your farewell party, did you?" I've heard that Franklin will be there in person. I hope nothing bad happens to him......"
Luna's hands were tied in front of her, and she glared at Martin in disgust, which she looked like Jaceline to Hudson watching through the scope, but he had a ...... on him today, in addition to his contempt and bravery Fear.
"You said there would be a trial," he snapped, as Martin shoved him roughly.
"I'm afraid traitors don't need to be judged." Martin scoffed, "It's all arranged." You're going straight to the gallows. ”
But he did so with a twist of his head, because the guards escorting the carriage to the square were poking him with the handle of their guns as they walked towards the gallows.
The noise at the execution ground grew louder and louder, and the crowd on either side reached out to grab him, beat her, and kick her to the ground. Augustus got up, and when he saw a man with a grudge in his eyes throwing his fist at Luna, he leaned forward, and when he was so close to him, Augustus grabbed his fist before he could do it, and he twisted the man's arm behind him, and threw him to the ground.
After the man fell, he looked up at Augustus in a rage, but the sight of Augustus glaring at him under his hood stopped him, and he got up, and was swept away by the agitated and confused crowd.
Meanwhile, Luna and Alice had been pushed into the distance, advancing along with the avenging insults of the crowd, Augustus too far away to stop the other man from rushing forward and grabbing Alice, but he was close enough to see the man's face under the hood. Close enough to read what he said from the movement of his lips.
"You're not alone. When you need it, you just shout ......"
That's Esker.
Alice nodded, then smiled at Luna, who was looking back in front of her.
The guards were impatient, and dragged them away, and Augustus stood and listened, "What about the Frankliners?" He thought to himself.
Just as he was thinking of him, he arrived. Franklin arrived at the execution ground with a small group of guards. When Luna and Alice were pulled onto the gallows, and the executioner put the noose around his neck, the attention of the crowd turned to the other end of the square, and Franklin was led to a raised platform behind him, where the guards still rudely kept the crowd out even now.
Beside Franklin stood a man with pigtails, with a hand* around his waist, and judging by his dress, the man was the so-called Samuel, who stood with Franklin, and Augustus took the opportunity to compare the two of them: Samuel was much taller than Franklin, and at the same time looked more approachable than Franklin, while Franklin was somewhat aloof. But even this could not hide the fact that Samuel had been a ronin, and on the other side of him stood a young officer, as for the identity, Augustus did not know, but he knew very well, it was a major general, and he saw his rank clearly.
The young soldier then left Franklin with a few guards, and he made his way through the square, pushing through the crowd as he went, while Martin climbed the steps leading to the gallows and addressed the crowd, which swarmed forward. Augustus found herself squeezed between the crowds, smelling wine and sweat in her nose, and she tried to squeeze a little space into the crowd with her elbows.
"Brothers, sisters, patriots," Martin began his speech, and the crowd quieted down anxiously, "a few days ago there were two conspiracies in Wharton Central, and they were so wicked and vile that even the retelling of them at this moment would disturb me deeply, these two young girls in front of you, who had not shown their talents at a time of wisdom and studiousness, had done something unreasonable and conspiracy to murder our beloved general. ”
People gasped.
"Yes," shouted Martin, as he began to get straight to the point, "what kind of darkness and madness drive them, none of us know. They had no intention of defending themselves, and they remained silent, despite our repeated pleas and begging them to confess. ”
At that moment, the executioner stepped forward and put a noose and sack around Luna's neck.
"If they are willing to defend themselves, if they are willing to confess and accept atonement, we can let them live, but what other choice do we have? They tried to launch terrorist attacks to overthrow the regime, tried to send us into the hands of the enemy, and we were forced to send them out of this world for the sake of justice, for the sake of peace, for the sake of tranquility! It is God's business to forgive them, and all we do is send them to God! May God have mercy on their souls! Martin paused as he spoke, and the executioner stepped forward and put a sack and rope around Alice's head.
It seemed that he was not paused, but finished, and Augustus looked around, trying to find several others. If it's a rescue mission, now is the right time to do it, isn't it? But where are they? Hell, what the hell are they going to do?
Hudson, we definitely need snipers now, Augustus looked at the rope on it, and the idea was not ideal: the arrow could not completely cut the rope of the thickness of the steel cable, Hudson must use the correct caliber of the bullet, both girls were light, and even cutting enough fibers would be life-threatening.
He had to report Hudson right away, he found out he wasn't wearing headphones, which was bad.
In the distance, Augustus turned to inspect the building behind him, and he began to search for Hudson's location.
Sure enough, there was an archer in the place she might choose, standing in front of a tall casement window. He saw Hudson with his gun in hand, squinting his eyes in the direction the sight was pointing. Then, at the moment when the trapdoor opens and Alice and Luna's bodies fall, he fires his guns.
The bullet sped past the crowd, and although Augustus was the only one who noticed it flying, he quickly turned his gaze to the gallows, just in time to see it hit the rope and cut a part, of course, but not enough to cut it.
It wasn't good, just when Augustus felt bad, he began to rummage through his pockets, and just as he found a knife to throw out, a throwing knife flew over his head again, cutting through the air and cutting the rope.
At the same time, Luna and Alice writhed in pain, and then fell alive through the trapdoor, and a surprised inhale rang out around Augustus. For a moment, he noticed that everyone's eyes were looking behind him, Augustus stepped forward, and he saw a man running away who was wearing a black cloak and hood like him, but the only difference was that the man had a rank on his left shoulder.
Because the clothes were the same, the people were so frightened that they retreated from Augustus's side. At the same time, he saw Achilles bend down and burrow under the gallows, where the two girls had fallen.
They were safe, but it was time for Augustus to go.
Augustus then began to flee, and as the shocked calm turned into a roar of vengeance, people kicked and punched him along the way, and the guards began to squeeze through the crowd and rush towards him. Augustus slashed one or two bystanders with his dagger, enough to see blood enough to make the other attackers hesitate.
Now they were much more timid, and in the end they gave up space around Augustus. He hurried out of the square and returned to my horse, the boos of the angry crowd echoing in his ears.
Augustus rode back to his inn at the foot of the mountain.
"It's a bit abrupt." Pinkerton, who came back in the evening, said.
"What's wrong?" Augustus asked
"He killed Martin before he could catch Franklin, and then escaped by jumping off the waterfall," he asked, "what about you?" Augustus told him about what had happened today.
Only he didn't say the identity of the man in black, and when the matter finally came to an end, Augustus breathed a sigh of relief, and they were going to return to Wharton tomorrow morning, and as for Hudson, they would pick up Luna.
As for Asker and Osk, the two of them left here, and before leaving, they were going to give them a big gift, supposedly a rare warship, and they had entrusted Huang Jie and Bertha to the Hudson family, and they were going back to see what was going on with Operation Scavengers.
Augustus sat down in his chair, picked up the rest of Albert's diary, and continued to flip through it.
