Chapter Twenty-Six: The Sacrificial Pit

The most famous poem about the history of Shu is written by Li Bai in "The Difficulty of Shu Dao": "Silkworms and fish, how dazed is the founding of the country!" He is 48,000 years old, and he is not populated with Qinsai. There is a bird road in Xidang Taibai, which can cross the top of Emei. The earth collapsed and the mountain destroyed the strong man to death, and then the ladder stone stacks were hooked together. "

During the Spring and Autumn Period of the Shang and Zhou dynasties, the territory of the ancient Shu Kingdom reached Hanzhong in the north, Nanzhong in the south, and Qingjiang in western Hubei in the east. During the Warring States Period, Shu retained Hanzhong to the north, penetrated deep into the southwest to the south, and occupied the area east of the Jialing River to the east, becoming a large country in southwest China.

The Yellow Emperor married a woman from the Shushan clan as a concubine and gave birth to a baby boy. When the baby boy grows up, he is a "eye longitudinal" (that is, double pupils) and lives in a stone cave at the foot of Min Mountain. He is good at raising silkworms, and is called "silkworm cong" by the people because of his meritorious work in "teaching the people to silkworm mulberry". Later, he became the leader of Shudi.

There is the Shu Marquis silkworm cong, whose eyes are longitudinal, is the ancestor of the Shu people.

In 1613 B.C., in the late reign of the Shang Dynasty king Zujia, the silkworm tribe did not yield to the control of the Shang Dynasty and led the tribe to resist, but the weak were not strong, and they died in Minshan, and their people fled in all directions.

At the beginning of the succession of the Shang king Liao Xin, the Qiang side rose again in the area of present-day Shaanxi and Gansu, repeatedly violated the Shang Dynasty, and often caused great losses to the Shang army, prompting Liao Xin to decide to use troops to pacify Xirong.

In view of the strong armed forces of the Qiang side, Shang Wang Liao Xin carried out a comprehensive plan and arrangement before the war, on the one hand, he ordered the garrison army to temporarily avoid the enemy's front and stand by to move, and on the other hand, he organized elite troops to reinforce in time to resist the Qiang attack, and broke up the Silkworm Cong tribe, and the leader of the Silkworm Cong clan was shot.

Silkworm Cong, the silkworm god in ancient myths and legends, is the first person to be the king of Shu Kingdom, he is a silkworm expert, it is said that his eyes are protruding forward like a crab, he "wears green clothes, persuades farmers to mulberry, creates a sarcophagus", with its great courage and superior wisdom, the development of production and economy in the Chengdu Plain, cast the historical glory of the ancient Shu Kingdom.

"Wait, didn't you say this is the family mausoleum of the Shuixi family? Now how is it the silkworm cong of the ancient Shu country again", Lao Hu suddenly heard Leng Bingyan say this, the conversion between the two was too fast, and it was too fast for him to accept, this tomb was from the Shuixi family or from the ancient Shu country, Lao Hu couldn't tell it now.

"The historical record of the Shuixi family is in the Three Kingdoms period, but the ancient Shu Kingdom appeared in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, perhaps the Shuixi family moved to Guizhou after the division of the ancient Shu Kingdom, and finally developed into a family in Guizhou, which is not impossible."

"Everything inside will tell us the truth of history, go, look inside, maybe there will be new discoveries" Not only Lao Hu, but now everyone doesn't know whose tomb this is, so they can only take one step at a time.

Sure enough, when they walked behind the stone turtle, they found that there was a staircase going up, and when they walked up the stairs, another stone gate blocked them out.

However, on the door, there is a bronze longitudinal human face on the stone door, the bronze human face eyeballs protrude forward from the eye socket more than ten centimeters, and there is a dragon cast on the bridge of the nose.

"This is the fish, the second generation of the ancient Shu king, the second king of Shu after the silkworm cong, the eagle has a keen eye, powerful claws, and walks against the wind, the ancient Shu ancestors are full of fantasy and admiration for them, and they are the most bird-respecting people in ancient China."

"The ancient Shu people gave the image of a bird to their ancestors, and also worked tirelessly to cast bronze ritual vessels with the image of a giant eagle head, a human head, a bird body, and a human eagle claw," Leng Bingyan said.

"I'll blow up the stone gate with explosives", Lao Hu was the first to walk forward, but he didn't step out and walked back again, as if he suddenly thought of something.

"Xiao Gang, I'm afraid of touching the mechanism, or you come", this kind of thing is still operated by professional people to avoid risks.

"I'll try it first", Yan Wenbin lay on the ground and wanted to see through the gap to see what was going on inside the stone door, but as soon as he lay down, he saw a pair of eyes looking at him inside.

"Hell", Yan Wenbin was so frightened that he immediately stood up, his face was pale, why there was a pair of eyes looking at him inside, Yan Wenbin didn't know, but those eyes were very vicious, they were all white eyeballs, no eyeballs.

"Do you see it clearly"? Lao Hu looked at Yan Wenbin and said nervously.

"I saw it clearly, I saw something clearly, there was a pair of eyes inside, I was scared to death, I didn't see anything, but I have seen the tomb door mechanism inside, and it is not difficult to crack it."

"But just now I found a pair of straight eyes staring at me, those eyes were green, there were no eyeballs, they were all white eyeballs, and they almost scared me to death", Yan Wenbin was still afraid of those eyes at that time.

"Xiao Gang, don't scare me, I know you're very skinny, but now is not the time to scare me, let's talk about how to open the tomb door first, you are very bad, I don't bother to believe your nonsense", Lao Hu didn't think so, and Yan Wenbin didn't scare him once or twice.

The mechanism behind the stone door is called the tap stone, there is a pit behind the door, put the stone behind the door, there is a pit from the starting point of the stone ball to the end point, there is a certain drop between the two, an oblique angle is formed between the drops, the stone door blocks the stone ball, the stone ball does not move, when the stone door is slowly closed, the stone ball will roll down the horizontal groove, and finally fall into the pit behind the door, blocking the door.

"To open this stone door, you need to use a thin steel wire to make a sleeve that is a little larger than the stone ball to cover the stone ball, and then the person goes to the top to pull the steel wire and lift it up, and the stone ball leaves the pit and then moves to the side, you can open the stone door, this is the way to crack it."

"But the stone ball is round, even if the steel wire can cover the stone ball, the steel wire will be slippery when it is lifted up, and the stone ball cannot be lifted at all, unless the hemp rope is used, the hemp rope has been soaked in water, and it will become tighter and tighter, but the stone ball is round, and the hemp rope will also slip even if the resistance is large." Lao Hu knew that opening the stone gate was not as simple as Yan Wenbin said.

"It seems that there is only one other way", Yan Wenbin also felt that the method left by his grandfather was unreliable, and now he can only rely on his own hands.

"Go find wood that can be burned, pile it next to the stone gate, then pour fire oil, and when the stone door is burned red, pour it with cold water, at this time the stone is very hot, but when it encounters cold water, it will suddenly crack."

"No, when the stone encounters a high temperature of 1000 degrees, it will be burned into lime, I have a flamethrower here, the flame can be adjusted, but this stone gate is very thick, it is estimated that it will take half a day", Leng Bingyan's subordinates stepped forward with a flamethrower.

"You only need to burn the stone red, pour it with cold water, and there will be cracks in the stone door, you also have a sledgehammer, and when Lao Hu is full, you can get it in a few clicks, don't look at Lao Hu's bloated figure, but what he has is strength, a live human flesh excavator, and he can be energetic when digging coal" Gang Wenbin can only hand over such gravity work to Lao Hu.

Sure enough, after the stone gate was burned to the ground, Gang Wenbin poured it with cold water, and repeated it three times, and many places in the stone gate showed traces of explosion, saving a lot of manpower and time.

"Xiao Gang, get out of the way", Lao Hu took off his clothes and tied it to the sledgehammer, and used all his strength to hammer it hard, and a big hole that could be drilled into the stone gate soon appeared, and Lao Hu pushed away the stone ball after they entered, and opened the tomb door.

After they walked in, they found that this back room was really different, the back room was divided into two parts, in front of them was a flat square, there was an altar behind the square, there was a tree on the altar, and the altar was surrounded by a moire stone fence.

On both sides of the square are the figures of ancient women kneeling on the ground holding oil lamps, but Lao Hu and they have already lit all the oil lamps, so the structure of the backroom is very clear and clear.

There is a huge pit in the square, and there are steps leading down on all sides, and the pit is covered with mud, but the surface is covered with moss, and no one knows what is in the pit.

There are all kinds of charms on the stone slabs on the ground around the big pit, and there is a huge rectangular tripod in front of it, under which there are animal feet, and the ears are in the shape of a human-faced Yaksha, and the facial expression of the Yaksha is very hideous.

There are strips of cloth of various colors hanging on the walls around this front hall, and the strips of cloth are all strange charms, Yan Wenbin is not a Taoist priest, of course he doesn't know what these charms are used for, but there is a strange idea that appears in his mind.

"Lao Hu, you take this with you, and then go to the pit below to peel off the moss to see what is there, remember to wear gloves, and the skin should not come into contact with the objects under the moss", Yan Wenbin took out the peace charm hanging on his neck and gave it to Lao Hu.

"What is the big pit for", Lao Hu actually knows a rough idea, but he just doesn't dare to say it.

"It's supposed to be a sacrificial pit," said Gang Wenbin.

For sacrifices, Lao Hu is no stranger, the ancient people were more superstitious, they all like to sacrifice to the gods, people worship the gods of their own sacrifice ceremony, surrender to the gods, hope that the gods can protect themselves.

Sacrifice is a part of the Chinese rituals, is the main part of the Confucian etiquette, the ritual has five classics, no more important than the sacrifice, is to do things to the gods to bless. The objects of worship are divided into three categories: heavenly gods, earthly gods, and human gods. The gods are worshipped, the earth is only sacrificed, and the temple is enjoyed.

In ancient China, "the gods are not of the same kind, and the people are not of the same race", and there was a strict hierarchy of sacrifices. The gods and the earth are sacrificed only by the Son of Heaven. The princes and doctors sacrifice to the mountains and rivers. Shishu can only sacrifice to their ancestors and the god of the stove.

"Sacrifice" also means to worship the gods, pray to the gods, and worship ancestors. In primitive times, it was believed that the human soul could exist without the body. Sacrifice is a derivative of this idea of the soul.

The first rituals were simpler and more barbaric. People used bamboo, wood or clay to shape idols of gods, or painted images of gods such as the sun, moon, stars, and beasts on rocks as objects of worship. Food and other gifts offered to the gods are then displayed in front of the idols, and the presiding officer prays, while the worshippers sing and dance to the gods.

There are certain norms for sacrificial ritual offerings, and the old custom of preparing offerings to the gods or ancestors to show reverence and ask for blessings.
