Chapter 83: Amusement Park (Part I)
"You're so nervous right now, buddy. Pen ~ Fun ~ Pavilion www.biquge.info" Harry patted Peter on the shoulder, whispering in a voice that only the two of them could hear. "Anyway, you didn't do anything wrong, why do you seem so weak-hearted?"
"Weak heart? Nervous? Are you kidding? Peter was a little excited, but he wisely kept his voice down. Why did you bring Mary? When did she come back? Why don't I know anything? β
"Your first reaction is why she is there, and she will be sad if she hears your words."
Harry's teasing only made Peter more irritated. The still cynical-looking look on the other man's face made Peter think that Harry was taking it all for a joke.
"Damn, if you could have said hello to me beforehand, I would have at least..."
Peter's words were immediately interrupted by Harry, who took on a rare and serious look. "What? Can you do anything if I say hello beforehand? Are you sure you can change anything that way? β
"Thisβ" Peter's face turned red instantly. I... I can at least prepare a rhetoric or something. You were so sudden, I wasn't prepared for it at all. β
"You're thinking too much, boy." Harry's eyes turned to contempt. "Trust me, your acting skills and eloquence can only make it worse. Rather than telling lies that can be exposed with a little confronting in the end, it's better to perform in such a natural way. β
Harry sighed and patted Peter on the back a few more times in a way that he had come by. "Again, brother, you didn't do anything wrong, so try to look confident. Besides..."
An eerie smile flashed across Harry's face. "In a way, this situation is also a man's paradise."
-----
Heaven is a ghost.
Hell is not enough to describe the scene where Peter is now. The girls, who had just come off the roller coaster and were screaming in the last second, returned to their previous state, occasionally putting cynicism into their words.
Now he longed to go back and bury his head in creating a space-time machine to take him back to the day before Mary returned.
However, the time machine doesn't exist, and Peter has to bite the bullet and deal with two girls who are not in a good mood. Although these two girls usually have a little temper, he would rather face a Gwen or Mary who is really annoyed by him than the murderous intent under the cover of the stab in front of him.
So now he is like a robot, and he doesn't dare to make any moves at all, for fear of causing dissatisfaction on either side. For his behavior, Harry, who was watching the play from the sidelines, could only shake his head and sigh secretly.
Unbeknownst to Peter, the two girls were also quite unhappy with his inaction.
Gwen was quite annoyed right now. The girl in front of her was clearly interested in Peter, and she could understand all the lethality that such a beautiful girl could do to men. But as her own boyfriend, everything Peter did seemed quite unfair to her. What's the point of being so estranged from other girls in front of your girlfriend?
Gwen glanced jealously at Mary's chest, and a feeling of unwillingness arose. It must be this nasty figure, right? Anyway, why is a sixteen-year-old girl in such a good figure? Could it really be that he grew up drinking papaya milk?
However, for this girl who is 'slightly' stronger than her in figure and appearance, there is not much sense of crisis in Gewen's heart. In just twenty minutes of conversation, she had discovered a fatal weakness in the other party.
The other party is not smart, and in a way a little stupid.
If the chest is counted among the limbs, then it is quite appropriate to describe Mary with well-developed limbs and a simple mind. She wasn't quick to react, and it took a long time to react to the taunting words in Gwen's language. Her knowledge seemed rather poor, and she couldn't even interject in some of the discussions initiated by Harry and Peter, and could only stand aside and giggle.
It's just a vase. That's how Gwen gave Mary her own comments. And since she has discovered the weakness of the other party, she is smart and naturally will not let this advantage be wasted in her hands.
"The technology of biological gene fusion is quite mature. If the funding is in place and everything goes well, the mentor's research will be able to produce a product that can be promoted among the general public within two years. It's enough to change the world! β
Her strategy was simple, just find a topic that only she, Harry, and Peter were interested in. The woman's IQ was enough to keep her out of the conversation.
"Is that the cross-biological gene fusion you talked about last time?" Peter was intrigued. "Have you solved the problem of genetic erosion?"
"Of the two hundred and twenty test subjects, only three have problems." There was a smug look in Gwen's tone. "The degree of cell stability has reached an acceptable level, and the success rate of flawless division is close to 100 percent. And we also have some ideas about how to reverse genetic erosion, and we are ready to move on to the next phase of research. β
"That's not enough." Harry objected. "As far as I know, Dr. Connors' research is still a long way from completion. Strictly speaking, such a high failure rate already means that human experiments are not feasible. Can you imagine that six out of 400 volunteers had problems? The Osborne group will be brought down by them. β
"I'm talking about technology, technology!" As her tone became more intense, a hint of redness appeared on Gwen's face. "Dr. Connors's research has proven to be feasible, and all that is needed now is time."
"Harry is right about this, there are so many problems that can arise at this stage of human trials." Peter shrugged. "I don't know how many studies are stuck at this hurdle. Not to mention compatibility, those subtle adverse reactions that cannot be detected in animals can be a big problem in humans. β
"But if you don't do human experiments, you can't get any improvement in these areas, can you?" Gwen still sticks to her philosophy. "The results of this research could change the lives of tens of thousands of people."
"But if that means someone has to make sacrifices, it's going to have to spend a few more years at the very basics." Harry shrugged and smiled. "That's the reality. Believe me, I'm probably more interested in Dr. Connors' research than you are. After all, this is one of the most important projects of the Osborne Group, and I hope it will succeed more than anyone. β
The topic was instantly diverted. The three of them were immediately caught up in an argument about the morality and necessity of human experimentation, ignoring the strange stares of the other visitors in the amusement park, and Mary, who could only look at them at the side.
It was only after a while that Harry realized that the fourth member of his small 'team' had not spoken for a long time. Looking at the two little couples in front of him who were chatting happily, and Mary who looked awkward on the side, he couldn't help but hold his forehead and sigh. For some reason, he always felt a little upset today.
"The amusement park closes in three hours." He waved the four tickets in his hand. "We're not spending money here to talk about research projects in the lab. What's next for us? Take another roller coaster ride or go shopping on a pirate ship? β
"Roller coaster!"
"Pirate ship!"
Harry's words managed to draw the attention of the two of them back again, and Mary's face stretched slightly, returning to the faint smile she had had seen before.
