Section 16: The Little Bar at Midnight

In the fourth week after the start of the second semester of the third year, the school held a week-long "European Classical Music Tour", in addition to concerts of Mozart, Mahler, Mendelssohn and Smetana classics in the school auditorium, as well as classical music lectures and musical instrument exhibitions in the multi-purpose hall of the main building. The tickets for the concert were naturally given by Lin Jun, one for me, one for him and one for Melly. When we arrived at the concert, the performance had just begun. What puzzled me was that Lin Jun and Mei Li's seats were not next to each other, but ten seats apart in the same row, and the seat number given to me was obviously closer to the stage than the two of them, five rows before and after Lin Jun's seat. Actually, I had to sit anywhere, but with Lin Jun's relationship with the school management, it would have been easy to get two adjacent seats, but he didn't do that. In addition, I remembered a detail just now, on the way to the auditorium, Lin Jun and Mei Li did not keep a little distance side by side, but walked a long distance back and forth, although I knew that they had never held hands or snuggled together like other couples in the school, but this time the distance was farther than usual.

Out of my knowledge of Mahler's musical career, I went to the multi-purpose hall the day after the concert to listen to a lecture by a music teacher, and in the open space in front of the speaker were all kinds of instruments commonly found in symphony orchestras, such as violin, cello, timpani, French horn, trombone, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, etc., and even a harp! The students who attended the lecture were each given a chair, and everyone sat around the pile of musical instruments at random. From the door, these instruments are like a flock of birds entering the breeding period, quietly incubating new life, and the surrounding circle of classmates seems to have become the guardians of these new lives. I took a chair from the door and found a place to sit down. At this time, the lecturer was talking about the relationship between Mahler's Song of the Earth and Chinese culture. When I sat down, I noticed that Melly was sitting about three or four meters away from me, and she spotted me, and we nodded and smiled at each other. Then I started looking for Lin Jun among the students around me, who should have come to listen to the lecture together, but Lin Jun did not show up until the lecture was nearing the end.

After telling Smetana's musical history, the lecturer announced the end of the lecture, and then invited a male student from the music department to play the first theme of the first movement of Mendelssohn's "Violin Concerto in E minor", and the reverberation brought by the violin began to ripple out in the silent hall. After the performance, the multi-purpose hall resounded with warm applause and applause. At the end of the show, I wanted to ask Melly why Lin Jun didn't come, but when I thought of the seating arrangements and the situation on the way to the concert yesterday, I simply gave up! If you get it, don't ask!

"What were you thinking at that time?" Melly asked.

"As I listened to the lecture and thought that all the animals in the zoo were free, I rushed out and occupied the school, driving us and the teachers away, and the newspaper made headlines with the headline 'Animals Gain Freedom and Domination Again'!" I replied.

"Huh? What's the story? Are you always thinking about these strange scenarios? You're such a weirdo! ”

"Strange? It's just a bit of a stretch! I said with a smile.

At this time, the small bar that is open all night is accompanied by low jazz-style background music, and the light cast from the glass bottle chandelier above the bar is very soft; At midnight, Melly's face was clearly reflected in my eyes, as beautiful as a garden blooming in the summer sun! She sat on the chair opposite the small round table, 60 centimeters away from me, leaning forward slightly, holding a soda glass in one hand and fiddling with a bar cue card on the table with the other, her legs together, and my red and black plaid shirt on her knees to ward off the slight chill of the night. At this point, it was just us and a couple at another table whispering in the bar.
