Chapter 22: The Path of Truth

The path of truth is rugged and distant...... Countless smart people, countless geniuses have fallen on this issue.

So much so that in the minds of many people, there is a strange psychology that the "Great Unification Theory" does not exist.

There is a reason for this, of course, and it stems from another great theorem: Gödel's incompleteness theorem!

Gödel, the famous mathematician, once proposed a very important milestone in the history of modern logic: he proved that any formal system, as long as it includes a simple description of elementary number theory, and is self-consistent, must contain propositions that are neither true nor falsifiable by the methods allowed in some system.

Gödel's incompleteness theorem, a theorem that defies common sense. It tells humanity that truth and verifiability are two different concepts. What can be proved must be true, but what is true is not necessarily provable.

In a sense, the shadow of paradox will always be with us. It is no wonder that the great mathematician Weyl exclaimed, "God exists, because mathematics is undoubtedly compatible; The devil also exists because we cannot prove this compatibility. ”

What does that mean?

If the concept is extended to the entire universe, and the laws of the universe are regarded as a system, then there will always be something inexplicable that does exist.

People may be able to spot them, but they can't be classified into existing systems, they just exist inexplicably.

Perhaps, "gravity" is such an inexplicable thing that the "grand unification theory" does not necessarily exist.

The road to seeking truth will always be so long and arduous, maybe human beings can find the great unified theory, or maybe human beings will never find it......

It may also be that the system of relativity and quantum mechanics are inherently separate from each other, who knows?

Is the universe knowable?

The theme of compulsory education and materialism tells us that the universe is knowable.

However, due to the uncertainty principle of microscopic particles and Gödel's incompleteness theorem, the basis of agnosticism has been shaken.

The universe is not necessarily knowable.

Man cannot break into God, he can only attack the darkness that surrounds the divinity. He threw the fire into the cold night, and the night receded, but only retreated. Through the efforts of generations, people have spent countless efforts to eliminate the surrounding darkness little by little.

Just when people are complacent that they are about to face the light, the edifice of classical physics suddenly collapses, the two dark clouds grow larger and larger, and people unexpectedly discover that beyond the darkness is an even greater, almost infinite darkness......

In this case, should it take a lifetime to explore some mystery that may never be solved?

Humans are very strange creatures, and they sometimes abandon their interests and fight purely for their beliefs......

Gravity, in almost all models, is a complex and difficult mystery to solve.

At present, the most promising way to depict the entire universe is called "string theory". String theory, including the subsequent development of M-theory, can not only solve the contradiction between quantum mechanics and general relativity, but also one of the solutions to quantum gravity, and it is likely to become the ultimate theory of the universe.

The "string theory" suggests that the universe originally had 11 metaverses, and then an explosion caused some of these dimensions to shrink into the space of elementary particles.

But so far, string theory has only been a rough framework, with a lot of possible solutions. There are as many different models as there are mosquitoes in the grass, and with current technology, they cannot be experimented, falsified, or predicted......

One only groped for the edges, with a large blank space in between.

So, string theory is just an empty shell, and there is no way to figure out what is right or wrong. For scientists, if they want to perfect string theory, it can only be said that it is a lifetime series...... It is simply not what current scientific theories can do.

Experts in string theory, the brightest minds, always have a blank expression on their faces, so much so that they look dumbfounded. But don't laugh at them, they are using their lives to fight against the infinite mysteries of the universe......

They know that this problem may be difficult to solve in their lifetime, but they still firmly study it...... Because if they don't take this path, there will be no one in the world to take it, and this possible path to the ultimate truth may be cut off.

Many divergent roads, where are you now? When will it be able to break through the waves?

The road has to be taken step by step, and the final string theory will be out of play for a while, and scientists will not be discouraged by it, and they will start to look for another more pragmatic theory.

Albert Einstein, the greatest scientist of the 20th century, once had the idea of "the same theory", he wanted to integrate the electromagnetic force into the gravitational framework of the general theory of relativity, trying to complete the unification of the four fundamental forces. (If realized, the electromagnetic force could be used to create gravity.) )

So much so that Einstein fought for it for the rest of his life, but in the end, more than 30 years of scientific efforts seemed to come to nothing......

Mr. Einstein said that it was not that he was not strong, it was really too difficult, and it was as nonsensical as a mess of yarn. There was really nothing he could do about it, so he could only leave this question to future generations......

Subsequently, the concept of "grand unified energy scale" was proposed, and many scientists have long believed that at very high energy levels, the basic interactions of the microscopic world, strong interactions and electroweak interactions, can be unified under a single normative group.

But frustratingly, this belief has been repudiated by experimental data, so much so that many scientists stay up at night, feeling as if their faith has collapsed.

However, the rise of the supersymmetry theory gave them hope again, so much so that the belief in the "great unified energy standard" changed to the belief in the "supersymmetry theory...... As long as the supersymmetry is correct, there is still hope for the grand unified energy standard.

Soon after, a new type of SU(5) theory, which predicted the decay of protons, was also given hope for a unified theory, but seemed to be rejected by experiments......

Needless to say, the simplest version of the theory of supersymmetry, which had been highly anticipated, was also experimentally ruled out at the beginning of the 21st century...... Another wave of faith collapse, and people's disappointment and frustration needless to say.

So much so that people can't see the end of the road at all......

Fail!

Fail!

Fail!

How bumpy the road to truth is!

Such a theory is not just a matter of drawing and writing in a few hours, but it takes years or decades to revise and perfect.

What would it be like to study things all your life and spend your life believing in the truth, only to find that everything is wrong and meaningless?

Such a failure seems to deny the meaning of the researcher's life.

Just like the great Albert Einstein, he fought for it for 30 years, but in the eyes of modern people, the methods and ideas he used are wrong. So much so that the last thirty years seem to have yielded nothing, and have not yielded results worthy of mention for modern physical research.

His last 30 years of research were considered meaningless. If it weren't for the great achievements of the past, Einstein would have been forgotten in the next 30 years.

People will only remember successes, not failures.

Time is the cruelest, countless losers in the pursuit of the truth, countless great figures, all faded away with their dream of reunification, faded away, gradually moved away from people, and slowly disappeared into the ruthless years of history......

If you are lucky, you will study the Standard Model and win the Nobel Prize, and if you are unlucky, you will only be forgotten. Their names will gradually fade away from people's sight.

Life is short, only a hundred years, why seek it on this rugged road?

Who knows?

Perhaps the top and smartest human beings are two species of people in their way of thinking compared to ordinary people.

Looking at it this way, the new human civilization and the previous human civilization are also two different civilizations......
