Chapter 24: Solving the Mystery (I)
Yu Ge and I carried those ancient books to the Qingdao Library in Shibei District, which is the largest library in Qingdao City, with a rich collection of books, and many world-class experts have been here for compilation work, and the purpose of our trip is naturally to decipher the hidden secret texts in the "Bird Island Chronicles".
It's easy to say, but Yu Ge and I both know in our hearts that under the current situation, it is impractical to rely solely on the manpower of Bird Island to compete with the army of tens of thousands of fish people, and even if we rush back, we can't turn the tide of the battle, so we can only rely on the long-lost spell on their island that Yu Ge once said, and according to what she said, that spell is enough to destroy the world.
But it is unknown whether this spell really exists, and it is also unknown whether this spell is really as described by Yu Ge.
So the hope of breaking this spell seems slim to me, but it's more like the last struggle before dying, and it's better to struggle than to sit still.
"Izumi? Is this really possible? For so many years, no one has ever cracked the secret. Yu Ge said half-incredulously after me.
"I think a big reason why you didn't crack it is because you deliberately don't communicate with the outside world, you said that this is a spell written in Chinese, I believe I can help you." Actually, I don't know where the confidence came from, but I have a premonition that it will be solved.
I took her by the hand and led her to the borrowing room on the third floor of the library, where many readers were already flipping through the books, even though it was early in the morning.
We took a number of reference books from the shelves that we thought might be useful, and then found a small square table to lay out the ancient books one by one.
There are a total of nine volumes of "Torishima Chronicles", which are the text volume, the animal and plant volume, the genealogy volume, the music volume, and the spell volume.
The text scroll is a comparative translation of the Chinese language and the Birdman language, similar to a dictionary, and Yu Ge once said that this set of Torishima Chronicles was compiled by her mother and a human who had drifted to the island, and I believe that their main work was on this first volume, because it was a very tedious task to merge the two languages.
The Flora and Fauna volume records the variety of birds and plants that exist on Bird Island. This volume is very colorful, but it has nothing to do with the spell we are trying to crack, I flipped through it and found that many of these plants have similar records in the "Classic of Mountains and Seas".
The genealogical scroll is a compilation of the entire Birdman Clan's owner's information, including portraits and textual descriptions. The information is very detailed, and there is everything about the eight characters of the birthday, but the page of Yuge is blank, and there is only a bare portrait of her. And then there's the fact that I marvel at how long they are, and many of them have lived for thousands of years.
My favorite of these five volumes is the fourth volume - the music volume, which contains all the music and instrument performance methods of the bird-man tribe, and in the second half there are some scores of human guqin music, such as "Mountains and Flowing Water" and "Guangling San". I think it was brought over by the human who drifted to Bird Island, and although Yu Ge told me that there was no cultural exchange between them and humans, this "Bird Island Chronicle" is the best counterexample, and this kind of blending has been inadvertently generated.
And the spell we want to crack is in the fifth volume of this set of books, the spell volume.
The spell scroll records all the spells that the birdman can cast, such as the spell to control the feathers, as well as the spell to manipulate the plants on the island, the password to call the birds, and of course, the most surprising thing to me is a trick that can expand the sense of hearing, when casting the spell, the birdman's hearing can cover a radius of ten miles, so when Long Shao denigrated the feather song on the side, she heard it clearly. These spells are written in the Birdman language, with various portraits of a naked fairy as illustrations, and the author of Torishima did not translate these spells into Chinese, so I couldn't read them at all.
And the ancient spells we need to crack are included on the last page of the spell scroll, which is only a few short lines, and most of it is in Chinese characters. There are no illustrations and no specific descriptions.
The text reads as follows:
Half white and half yellow,
The revetment is steep and the water mist is long.
Fly over the dive,
There was a sound in the light of the stone fire.
tatari i hoki mai koe
Twenty-one, three-positive
A poem that I don't understand the meaning of the poem, a passage of birds, and finally some words composed of horizontal and vertical characters.
I was still full of confidence, but when I saw this strange text, my mood fell to the bottom, except for the birdman language in the middle, which looked like a spell, I really couldn't find anything to do with spells.
"Yu Ge, you said that you have been studying this text for a long time, have you gained anything so far?" I looked at the puzzle and frowned.
Yu Ge shook his head helplessly. "I don't know much, just some of my personal speculations."
"Tell me about it."
"I suspect this spell has something to do with thunder and lightning, because the people say that our ancestors used to be able to harness thunder and lightning, but it's just a legend." Yu Ge explained. "But I believe that this will not be groundless, and the sound in the last sentence of that Chinese sentence is also in line with thunder and lightning."
Yu Ge's analysis is not unreasonable, and I nodded to cater to it.
"I can roughly read those Chinese, but in the literal sense of the word, it is not a spell at all, but like a description of a scene, an ordinary poem." Yu Ge said.
Not to mention that she is a non-native speaker, even if I am a human looking at that text, I can't guess what it has to do with magic.
"That birdman language is supposed to be a spell, it's basically the same as the spells I usually recite when I cast spells, and it's catchy." Yu Ge stared at the birdman language and read it silently. "But I've tried many times, I've used many accents, and nothing has worked."
Birdman is a very strange language, it sounds like there is a lot of birdsong elements, Yu Ge suddenly read the spell twice, although the sound is not loud, but it still causes a few children around to be restless.
"What are they talking about?"
"It's the same as the sound of a monster on TV."
In addition to this Chinese poem and the language of the birdman, there is a line at the bottom that resembles a number. Yu Ge and I agreed that it was actually a number, because the word "δΊ" was another form of the number four, and the word "zheng" represented the number five, because it had exactly five strokes horizontally and vertically.
Twenty-one and three-positive is 21435.
But what does 21435 represent? Does it represent a combination of page numbers? pages 21, 4, and 35; Still on pages 214 and 35, each volume of the Torishima Chronicles has hundreds of pages, and if this string of numbers really represents the page number, the possibilities can be said to be endless.
It gives me a headache just thinking about it.
