Chapter II: Serial Suicide Cases
The dossier consists of three copies in three portfolios.
The first case made me sit up straight.
In the early hours of the morning, a man who lived alone died in front of his computer, the deceased had no obvious external injuries and no signs of movement of the body, in addition, there were no signs of forcible break-in, no signs of struggle, no obvious signs of theft, and the surrounding investigation showed that no one witnessed any suspicious suspects in the vicinity that night.
With this information, the police tentatively characterized the case as a suicide.
That's true, at least, if I were a police officer at the scene, I would have made the same judgment.
However, the later investigation was a big surprise.
First of all, until the police entered the scene, the computer in front of the deceased remained turned on, but the hard disk of the computer was missing, and according to the state of the corpse, the deceased sat in front of the computer for at least 3 hours before his death.
Could it be that the deceased sat stupidly for more than 3 hours in front of a computer that could not display anything at all? And then committed suicide?
On the other hand, if the hard drive ever existed, when did it disappear? Who took the hard drive?
However, this is contrary to the results of the on-site investigation, because there is no sign of forcible entry into the deceased's room, or the deceased took the initiative to invite someone - if this point is expanded, there will be many debatable doubts, so put it aside for the time being.
Second, an autopsy revealed that part of the deceased's brain—to be exact, the vast majority of the entire cerebral spinal cord—had undergone changes in biological properties and physical state caused by high temperatures—which is commonly known as cooking!
What is even more frightening is that except for the cerebral medulla, no other body parts, including the head of the deceased, have been found to be "cooked".
It's appalling!
When I saw this, I had the urge to rush to the office of Cheng Cheng, the head of the Criminal Investigation Section of the Seongnam Police Bureau, and yell at him: "This is impossible to commit suicide!" Cook your own brain?! What a whimsical method of suicide! Tell me, how can a person commit suicide in such a strange way? This case should be characterized as murder – the murder carried out by the criminals using methods unknown to us. ”
But then my anger vanished, because it occurred to me that Cheng Cheng could also say, "It should be characterized as suicide - the deceased used methods unknown to us to achieve suicide." ”
After all, all the evidence now points to the suspicion of suicide...... Although, the motive for suicide is not clear.
Thinking of the "serial suicide case" that Li Yi said, I said in my heart that it wouldn't, could it be that the three cases were all such a strange way of dying?
With such questions, I read all three sets of case files in one go.
Damn, it's really evil.
In all three cases, the police tentatively characterized them as suicides.
The forms and characteristics of the deceased's deaths were exactly the same, all in the early hours of the morning, in front of the computer at home, and the autopsy found that the brain marrows of the three deceased were "cooked" to varying degrees.
All three computers, all desktops, were always on, and none of them found hard drives in the chassis.
After reading all the case files, I realized that I was completely wrong about the police.
In the dossier, the police listed quite a few suspicions and reasoned about the possibility of his murder in considerable detail—especially when the number of extremely similar deaths increased to three.
However, the police just couldn't find any evidence to completely overturn the suicide verdict - there was no real evidence either from the scene or from the exclusion of surrounding suspects.
What is even more frustrating is that even if it is a suicide, the motive for the suicide of the three men is not yet clear.
All three deceased met the following characteristics: middle-aged men over forty years old, single, childless, and in poor personal financial condition.
When people reach middle age, they can't achieve anything, and they are real losers in life.
If it weren't for the extremely bizarre and incomprehensible manner of death, it would have been a plausible motive to say that these people committed suicide because of the hopelessness of their lives, and these cases, as individual cases, would not have attracted the attention of others at all.
However, this way of dying is just too impressive!
What's more, there are three so-called "suicide cases" in a row that are almost identical!
I believe that not only Cheng Cheng and his subordinates could not accept such a conclusion, but also the officers of the police bureau could not accept this explanation.
However, the police did not find enough convincing evidence to prove that the perpetrators were serial murderers.
Aside from the extremely bizarre coincidence, there is no other argument to support the reasoning of the "serial homicide case" for the time being.
I put the file away and put it back in my original folder.
My movements are not very fast, in fact, it is better to organize the documents than to use this repetitive regular movement to sort out the same chaotic thoughts in my head.
The three cases do not have a lot of information, but there are a lot of suspicious points - this is the kind of case that I have not seen much, the kind of case that seems simple, but in fact it is extremely complicated and suspicious.
And the biggest doubt in front of me when I jumped out of the three stacks of scrolls was this beautiful woman named Ji Lan sitting across from me.
After careful consideration, I asked, "Miss Ji, can you tell me why you are so sure that the computer hard drive that does not exist in these three cases is the one you lost?" ”
"No, Mr. Ji." For the first time, Ji Lan used a blunt tone to deny my claim, "It's a computer hard drive that 'disappeared inexplicably', not a computer hard drive that 'doesn't exist'." ”
"Oh?" I raised my eyebrows.
I was glad to see the change in the mood of the suspicious client in front of me, and based on the stubbornness of her words, I was almost certain that the hard drive she was talking about was real.
Not only that, but that hard drive probably contains things that are directly related to these suicides.
But Ji Lan said an answer that I didn't expect: "My hard drive was stolen, and the person who stole my hard drive is Huang Yilun - I have surveillance video to prove it!" ”
Huang Yilun, even in the file I just read, the first person to die in the three suicide cases.
"When the hard drive was stolen, I immediately called the police. Because I have lived alone for many years, in consideration of personal safety, I installed a surveillance camera at home last year, and this time I really caught the thief, that is, Huang Yilun. Ji Lan brushed the small handful of hair on the left side back behind her ear, revealing the pale pink pearl earrings on the earlobe, "However, as soon as the police identified the thief, that Huang Yilun died mysteriously, and I didn't find my lost hard drive at home." ”
I quickly glanced at the file bag: "Huang Yilun died on September 12 - when did the theft of your house take place?" ”
"On the evening of September 10th, about ten o'clock, I remember it very well." Ji Lan replied.
"Only stole that hard drive?" I'm kind of incredible.
Ji Lan did not hesitate: "That's right." ”
I can only nod, I only need to make a phone call to Cheng Cheng to verify, so I believe what Ji Lan said.
The police department is already very efficient. On September 10, the case was reported in the evening, and the suspect was identified the next day, you must know that it was just the loss of a computer hard drive, and if there were other cases in the same period, it would definitely be suppressed in terms of priority. It's nothing else, it's just the best way to optimize resource allocation.
"Can you describe to me the form factor of your hard drive?"
"That's it...... The normal kind of hard drive, because it is in the case, is not something that I see every day, I can't name the special characteristics, I can only tell you, it is a 4TB hard drive, the sticker is blue, the brand is Western Digital. Ji Lan replied.
I launched a surprise attack without moving: "Well, what's the most important thing in the hard drive?" ”
"Yes...... Ji Lan was stunned for a moment, and immediately reacted, "Yes, I'm sorry, for some very important reasons, I can't tell you now." ”
As she spoke, she actually stood up, blushing, bent slightly, and apologized to me.
"Hey, Brother Ji, you're too serious, aren't you? Look at your face, it's like an iron skin. makes people want to stand up and apologize to you......" Seeing the beauty so "wronged" herself, Li Yi was more uncomfortable than me, "Sit down, sit down!" By the way, sit down and talk. This is not the police department, don't make it look like the interrogation on Team Cheng's side......"
I didn't pity the beauty because of the beauty's apology, and still had a cold face: "I can't say it, or I don't know?" ”
In fact, I had long sensed that she might not be willing to tell what data was stored in that hard drive, so I resorted to a sudden question, hoping to scam out some information, but Ji Lan's psychological defense was much stronger than I thought.
Ji Lan was so alert, I was even more curious, and at the same time more weird.
"Yes...... Can't say. After Ji Lan finished speaking, he added, "I can't say it for the time being." ”
"Good...... I understand. ”
I pondered for a while and said to Ji Lan, "Then, Miss Ji, I'll get here here today." I will investigate your commission as soon as possible, and I will inform you as soon as there is progress. Xiaoyi, help me send off guests. ”
When there are outsiders around, I won't call Li Yi a "stinky fish", I am several years older than him, and I call him "Xiaoyi", and I don't take advantage of him at all.
"I ...... Drop-off on your behalf? Li Yi was still a little unhappy, I even glanced at him, he came back to his senses, and said with a smile, "Yes, yes, I sent our Ji Da beauty." That, Ji Da Beauty, I'm actually an important assistant to Brother Ji, or you add me to WeChat, I'll report the specific progress to you at any time......"
Li Yi, this kid completely misunderstood what I meant, but I didn't bother to correct it.
Seeing Li Yi nodding and sending Ji Lan away, I said loudly outside the door: "Okay, Section Chief Shen, it's all here, why don't you come in and sit down and have a cup of tea?" ”
As soon as the words fell, Shen Tangzhi's figure appeared at the door.
