Chapter 9: Shields
Hearing Shen Tangzhi say that she was in for a treat, I breathed a sigh of relief, and automatically filtered the other words in her words, as the saying goes, there is money in the bag and there is no panic in the heart, we are an authentic poor person, and when it comes to a money word, it is not half a point of pride.
Since I was going to a high-end restaurant, I couldn't dress too shabby, but I was always extremely free and relaxed, and I searched around the morning closet and found only a black suit. The history of this suit goes back to when I was just an adult, when I was 19 years old and dropped out of college, and I bought this suit for an interview...... Of course, instead of becoming an office worker, I became a detective by chance - that's another story.
This suit was still expensive at the time, the material was good, and the style was also a casual small collar design. I took it out and tried it, and it still fit - maybe I was thinner back then, but now it's just enough to hold up the suit. I took a turn in front of the mirror, and I didn't fall behind in style, so I casually put on a blue shirt, and then closed the store and went out to the appointment.
A waitress in a light Western-style dress smiled and asked me what I needed, and kindly and politely led me to a separate private room set by Shen Tang.
It was a semi-circular room, richly furnished, with thick hand-embroidered felt carpets covering the entire room, and the only wall hung a series of huge oil paintings, with elaborately carved frames, showing the beautiful scenery of the foggy city of London, and the huge round floor-to-ceiling windows were the starry night view of the entire Jinguan City.
There were already three people sitting in the room, and when they saw me come in, Shen Tangzhi, dressed in a dark purple evening dress, got up to welcome me and introduced me to the other two guests present.
Shen Yi, Shen Tangzhi's cousin, is a rather charming woman, her appearance is slightly similar to Shen Tangzhi, but compared to Shen Tangzhi's cold and glamorous temperament, her cousin exudes a charming aura - her long hair dyed dark red slanted down like a waterfall, a black open-back dress with off-the-shoulders, snow-white long legs and plump chest are half-exposed, simple black and white contrast, sexy but not vulgar.
Another guest was a friend of Shen Yi, a foreign friend, Hyde. Estoril, an Englishman, holds a knighthood.
"This is the most famous detective in the city, Mr. Yoshimitsu," Shen Tangzhi stepped forward with a suspicious smile and grabbed one of my arms, "That's the boyfriend I just made." β
"What-uh......" As soon as I spoke, Shen Tangzhi pinched my arm hard, the corners of my eyes twitched, and a smile was forced, "I mean, it's an honor to meet you two." β
Shen Tangzhi's cousin, Shen Yi, after Shen Tangzhi said that I was her boyfriend, her face suddenly darkened - even if it was only for a short moment.
"Mr. Ji, it's a pleasure to meet you", Hyde in a crisp dark brown custom suit. Estoril stretched out his hand to me, as if to see the surprise in my eyes, and he grinned his mouth that was almost covered by a large golden beard, and smiled, "Since I met Miss Shen Tangzhi two years ago, in order to better understand and respect the mysterious Chinese culture, and to be able to communicate with Miss Shen smoothly in her native language, I have spent a year making up my Chinese. β
"I have to say, your talent is amazing, Mr. Hyde." Me and Hyde. Estoril shook hands, "You are the best foreign friend I have ever met who speaks Chinese." β
Hyde laughed when he heard this, and then invited Shen Tangzhi and I to go back to the table and sit down.
The round table of rosewood glows with a black jewel-like luster in a soft pale yellow light, and the white jade plate holds delicate food like a work of art.
"Sir Hyde is a visiting professor at St Christ's University in the United Kingdom, with a PhD in paleoculture and anthropological linguistics." Shen Yi, who was sitting across from me, added, his tone lukewarm.
By this time, I had already understood what kind of situation I was in.
Obviously, this English gentleman who speaks Chinese very well seems to have some interest in our Miss Shen Tangzhi, and Miss Shen Yi, who is sitting opposite me with a somewhat unswerving face, is the most powerful promoter of this relationship.
My head hurt a little again: Shen Tangzhi was using me as a shield, and I was stupidly breaking into an occasion similar to a blind date without any preparation.
To say not to be embarrassed is to lie to yourself.
Fortunately, the man who was the hero of the night was a gentleman, and in the course of the meal he not only helped me round the table, but also enthusiastically introduced me to the delicate dishes on the table, at least on the surface.
"I've heard of the detective industry, a mysterious profession, haven't I? However, this does not seem to be a Chinese tradition...... Uh, I don't know what noun to use to describe it, the kind of mage who uses spells? I'm guessing your profession is a mix of psychic and magician - I hope I don't offend you by saying that. β
Sir Hyde drank so well that his cheeks were only slightly flushed after drinking no less than five times as much red wine as he had drunk.
I understood what he was talking about, probably referring to the Taoist priests. But China's traditional culture is broad and profound, and it is good for foreigners to be able to distinguish between Taoist priests and monks, and other fortune telling, feng shui, and kanyu or something, even if they are Chinese, there are few people who know how to do it, let alone this foreigner.
Naturally, I would not be foolish enough to think that this Sir Hyde was really interested in my profession, so that he could make a big deal out of it. I explained to him that I was only dealing with some supernatural events, solving the problems of such events for people and returning them to normal life, and that I was not a psychic or a magician, and I could not rub fireballs or communicate with ghosts and the like.
Then I quietly shifted the conversation to Chinese cuisine, and sure enough, Sir Hyde resonated with the topic even more. He first praised the great variety and variety of Chinese cuisine, and then made a humorous self-deprecation about the somewhat meagre food preparation methods of the British, so he had to follow Shen Yi's advice and book a French dinner tonight.
"Since coming to China, I've found that most of my taste buds in my previous life have never been used, ha, it's a sad realization." He smiled, "However, the English afternoon tea is definitely worth trying, and if I have this honor, I hope to invite Mr. Ji to taste it next time." β
The talkative Sir Hyde led the way after the dinner, and I chimed in on a sentence or two from time to time, while Shen Tangzhi frequently put her cut food on my plate, and under her covert threatening eyes, I had to eat it all, while Shen Yi, who sat across from me, had a black face the whole time.
About an hour later, Sir Hyde, who was already slightly drunk, took the lead in saying goodbye, and Shen Yi also left immediately after biting his ears with Shen Tang.
As soon as these two "outsiders" left, I immediately relaxedβto be honest, I was not happy at all about this meal, and I was unspeakably uncomfortable and embarrassed.
I took off my suit jacket, put it on the back of my chair, pushed the wine glass aside, took the glass with the white water and drank it all: "I forgot to drink water before going out, I was embarrassed to drink so much in this situation just now, I was really thirsty." β
As soon as the two guests left, Shen Tangzhi returned to normal, and she teased: "I became your cheap girlfriend once, and I haven't complained yet." β
"It's okay if you don't mention it, I'm really a little angry about this ment." I clicked on the table, "Section Chief Shen, you fooled me into being your shield without saying a word, it doesn't seem to be very authentic, right?" β
