Chen Tang's Notes
There are many legends about Chen Tang. Various versions of the legend are all under one theme: mystery. Along the way, there have been countless kinds of imagination. All imagination comes down to one keyword: mystery. Everything is unknown, so it is mysterious because of the unknown. According to people who have been to Chentang, because of the traffic, it has not been greatly affected by modern civilization. In the land of the plateau, it is the last pure land.
Walking into Chentang, the oncoming two rows of stone houses and the small stone alley between the stone houses, the stones of the houses and the stones on the ground of the alley are undecorated, taking their natural direction. The width of the alley allows two people to walk side by side, and the narrow part of the alley allows two people to meet head-on, and they have to turn to each other to pass. Chentang is a small border town, with a total of about three or four hundred households and a population of about 2,000. Since there were no outsiders, there was not a single inn or restaurant in the town. There are no streets in Chentang, only these small stone alleys like spider silk, which string Chentang like a spider web. Without a guide, outsiders can walk through the alleys, facing buildings of almost identical appearance, as if walking in a labyrinth. But the people of Chen Tang are very enthusiastic, and if outsiders get lost, someone will naturally take him out.
The houses in Chentang are characteristic, with unadorned stone walls and roofs covered in romantic violet or lake blue. Viewed from a distance, this kind of architecture has a unique charm with lush greenery embracing rows of violet and lake-blue houses. In addition to most of the stone houses, there are two more distinctive types of houses in Chentang. One is a pavilion-like log cabin built on some strangely shaped trees around the town. This kind of wooden house makes people feel fascinated. Another type is a wooden house built on a boulder. If there is a large rock in the town, there must be one or several wooden houses built on it. This kind of wooden house is perched high on the top of the stone, and each one of them seems to be proud of the world.
In Chentang, almost everyone you meet will give you a greeting or a smile. If you meet a few people sitting on the floor in the open space in front of the door, chatting around a barrel of chicken feet valley wine, they will warmly invite you to take a few sips. Chentang has three special foods: one is chicken feet valley wine, which is brewed by the locals from a grain that looks like chicken feet. Every year, the Chentang family brews a large amount of chicken foot valley wine, which is a necessary drink for the people of Chentang every day. The alcohol content of chicken paw valley wine is very low, sweet and sour, and it will make people feel refreshed after drinking. There is also a wild vegetable called crow's beak, which is named because of its shape that resembles a crow's beak. This wild vegetable is a daily dish of the Chentang people, cooked with potatoes, beef and mutton, and has a special fragrance that makes people appetize. There is another kind of melon and fruit called a depth charge, because the melon and fruit belly is very sufficient, Chen Tang people can go out without water, just stuff a depth charge into the bag.
Chentang is a very laid-back place, and every day you can see men and women drinking chicken foot valley wine and singing and dancing together in the open space. Groups of children can be seen playing with bows and arrows, or running and playing. Chentang is inhabited by Sherpas, a mysterious tribe that no one knows where they came from, and no one knows what age this tribe came to Chentang. Sherpas, the Tibetan word means people from the far east. Chentang people are hardworking and very good at enjoying life. For them, a year is two seasons, the season of cultivation and the season of enjoyment. The attitude of Chen Tang people to life is indeed beyond people's reach. The quality of life of the people of Chentang is similar, and there are no particularly rich people here, and there are no poor people. People here are connected to nature, they can talk and sing, they can walk and dance, and they can eat milk and drink chicken foot valley wine.
In those days in Chentang, the relationship between the people of Chentang I saw was very harmonious, and even the groups of children chasing each other did not see any of them quarrel or fight. Everyone in Chentang drinks every day, but I haven't seen a single person who is crazy after drinking. This is the Chentang people's outlook on life, and perhaps this is the essence of human beings. In Chentang, I realized that many things that humanity has lost and is losing. I will never forget what Eun Tong said by the fire pit in his hall when Chen Tang and his landlord Eun gave each other. Eun refused to pay for the accommodation and meals paid by his companions. He said that we came here from thousands of miles away, and among the hundreds of Chentang people, we only ate and lived with his family, which was God's arrangement and a fate worth cherishing. The simple words of the simple Chen Tang people made me feel ashamed. How much providence does a person have in his life? How much have we cherished?
I've been walking, I've been searching. Memories are like flowers, some drift with the flow, and some open up in an instant. But Chen Tang, I remember this place.
