19 The secret door
Tomie and I walked out of the granary and tried to look for the other side of the wall, only to find that it didn't exist. The long corridor stretched into the depths of darkness, and then there was not even a doorway for more than ten meters. The wall on that side was not a partition wall in another room, but part of a concrete stone wall. It didn't match what Tomie had observed in the granary, and she was sure there was an empty space behind the smooth gap.
"Maybe it's empty inside." Returning to about the distance where the wall was, I kicked the stone wall of the hallway covered in mud and scratches.
Tomie also struck with an axe, but there was nothing wrong with the echo.
"Maybe it's too thick." She said.
The underground structure was so large and complex that we came in for a while, finding neither the monster's lair nor any other exit, but simply nothing. I propose to focus on our purpose, stop bothering with the minutiae, and move on to see what else is there. Tomie, however, is determined to unearth the secrets of this granary, which is like a Sudoku game that takes hours to get into. This isn't the first time I've seen Tomie's unexpectedly stubborn side.
Well, she's always right when she's stubborn, just like she does with horned monsters. I used such reasons to convince myself.
So we returned to the granary and continued to look for clues that we might have overlooked.
I studied the tracks of insects in the corners, and in this dark, damp place, they were the snakes of the ground, and even the crevices that rats could not pass through were like open doors to them. If there is a hole behind the wall, maybe ants or something like will crawl in from that side.
Tomie continued to study the gaps in the lampholders, and after a while she told me that there were similar gaps in the lampholders on both sides of the walls, except for the one on this side of the gate and the wall facing the gate. But even if you shine a flashlight into it, you can't see what is on the other side.
I walked around the corner and found something interesting. The thickness of the dust and the marks on the edges of the walls reveal a lot of secrets.
Such signs are mentioned in many books. The light of the flashlight shone on the walls, and I scrutinized the walls in the halo, and sure enough, I found something out of the ordinary. After removing the stains, there are several places on the wall that are smoother than others, and those stains look like some kind of mark.
I called Tomie.
"You see, there are often people pressing this place."
Tomie put the palm on it, and the size matched.
For what do those people have to put their hands on here for years? There are several explanations, but I believe one of them more in light of the traces in the corner.
Tomie seems to have thought of it too.
"Is this a secret door?"
Tomie and I are both interested in this time, and the mechanism on the wall is either pushing or pulling, but it should be more appropriate to use a push here. I pressed my hand on those mudras and pushed inward. I used all my strength, but the walls didn't move. Seeing this, Tomie also came to help, and the two worked together, and the wall showed signs of loosening. Pushing harder, the wall made a dull noise and slowly retreated until it could no longer move.
There were no special changes in the room. Tomie and I immediately thought of the other side of the wall, so we drew a scoop with a gourd and pushed it in with force.
By the time the wall reached its end, the vibrations rippled through the room, and dust and dirt fell overhead, and we might have escaped without helmets and protective suits, but now it didn't affect us in the slightest, fully armed.
As Tomie and I were savoring the changes in the room, an entrance opened to the wall facing the door of the room.
As if countless poisonous snakes would swarm out in the next moment, Tomie and I cautiously drew our weapons, but instead of showing up hostile lives, a pool of stagnant water poured out of the secret door. The water is muddy and dirty, because there are many inexplicable things floating in it, and the mixed stench emitted can be smelled even if you are wearing a mask.
Tomie and I didn't retreat, and the water quickly covered the surface of our feet, but the protective clothing had several layers of plastic film that could not penetrate into it, but the shoes became heavy after absorbing the water. The encounter in front of me makes people glad that they were prepared.
Tomie reached out and scooped up a piece of floating debris in the water, and I shone the flashlight at it, and as soon as I looked at it, I looked away, and it was a intestine, soaked in the water, and I didn't know if it was human or animal. Tomie throws it back into the water in disgust.
At this time, no one mentioned entering the secret door first.
"I remember there were quite a few dead animals here." I say.
"Any questions?"
"Those things ate all the corpses on the ground."
If this is where they hide, why don't they eat all the corpses here?
"Maybe they're picky eaters." Tomie said jokingly.
"Maybe." I said, "I have a crow at home. ”
Tomie looked at me for some reason.
"Crows are scavengers. But after I raised it for a while, I gave it fresh meat every day, and now it doesn't eat any carrion. ”
"That is to say......"
"Picky eaters are trained if they are not by nature."
"You mean they're in captivity?"
"Who knows? I'll just talk about it. ”
Tomie turned his gaze back to the secret door.
"Do you want to go in?"
"Let's go in, it's all open anyway." I plucked up the courage to say.
Tomie showed his obedience to the fullest, and took the lead in the water and walked towards the secret door. I followed closely behind the side one step at a time, my index finger on the trigger of the crossbow, ready to pull it down.
The corridor behind the secret door stretches horizontally, five meters wide, and the stone walls are covered with water stains, and from time to time water droplets drip from the top of the head, making a dull and hollow sound on the poncho and stagnant water. According to the calculation of the depth of the stagnant water, the stagnant water did not fill the entire corridor before the secret door was opened, leaving obvious marks on the stone wall about one meter high.
The road slopes down for a distance, and as you go deeper, the water gradually rises to your knees, and when you walk, you kick into the unidentified floating objects in the water, which is a chilling sensation.
After the first corner, you will reach the location of the living wall of the granary. We walked more than six meters and pushed the living wall no more than one meter. I don't know if the wall has filled the empty space behind it after it was moved. Tomie raised the flashlight aperture to the height of the live wall lampholder, and we stopped here. ,
Tomie stared at it, and I knew what she was looking for. I kept my eyes on her surroundings, on the lookout for any sudden danger.
"I have a question." Tomie suddenly said, "Those corpse-eating monsters appeared at night and left before dawn. Is it because of photophorexia? It was pitch black, but there was no sign of their activity. ”
"Maybe they're full and sleeping." I replied.
"I'm serious." Tomie said dissatisfiedly, "If they were going in and out of the same entrance we came in, there should be some traces along the way. ”
"Me too." I said, "It's too complicated, maybe they're going a different route, and the traces aren't obvious." The first monster I encountered was invisible, and they might have some weird instincts. Second, I don't think they're photophobic. ”
"How?"
"Like you said, there is not enough evidence for photoapathy. So I'm thinking about the biological clock. ”
"Circadian clock...... Do they only operate during that time? Well, it's more appropriate. ”
As he spoke, Tomie was still staring at the wall like a statue.
"Probably found." She turned to me and said, "Be Remy Martin again?" ”
I shone my flashlight at the wall. Maybe my eyes weren't good enough for her, and I didn't see anything.
I bent down, and Tomie stepped over my shoulder. Wet water trickled down her shoulders from her feet, and despite her hazmat suit, it still made people feel sick. Moreover, even if some of the weapons are laid down, the fully armed body is still very heavy.
"What did you find?" I asked rhetorically.
"Some marks, like something crawling through, maybe they're hiding in those crevices." Tomie said, putting his eyes in front of the slit.
"You can't see it from there, and you can't see it here." I say.
"But I know there are still vacancies in the road."
Tomie inserted the wooden stick that he had picked up the white silk before, stirred it for a while, and when he took it out, he not only wrapped more white silk, but also a spindle-like object hanging from it.
"It looks like a pupa worm." As she spoke, she put the pupa into a plastic bag ready for the pupae.
Suddenly, Tomie's movements stopped. I was about to say something, but she silenced me and listened.
I don't know why, but I try to listen. Sure enough, in addition to the sound of water, there was a faint noise in the silence.
Tomie was keenly aware of where the voice was coming from.
"Up ahead."
I know that she was referring to this secret passage.
"Yes...... Mankind? Her tone wasn't quite sure.
Through the thick swimming goggles, it seems that she can still feel her surprise. Not only her, but I also felt my heart suddenly speed up. Is there anyone else in this place? They certainly didn't come in through the entrance when we came.
There is a mixed feeling. It's like meeting strangers in the desert, they may have water, they may be in danger, they may be in trouble. Which one are they? I don't know what to do.
"Check it out." I say.
Tomie didn't object, and jumped off my shoulder, the sound of hitting the water in the corridor.
