After the First World War, the Pacific route was greatly hit, with the support of the Japanese government, the Japan Yusen Shipping Company built three high-speed passenger ships with a total of 17,000 tons and a speed of 20 knots and three high-speed cargo passenger ships with a total of 12,000 gross tons and a speed of 18 knots.
The Pacific War broke out, and the [Hikawa Maru] mail ship was requisitioned by the Japanese military as a hospital ship and incorporated into the Fourth Fleet of the Japanese Empire.
The modification work was carried out by Major Nakano, who served as a pharmacist, and there was even a crematorium and morgue on board. The Hikawa Maru, a converted hospital ship, was active in the South Pacific waters, and many Japanese ships were torpedoed and sunk at the time, but the Hikawa Maru miraculously survived three attempts.
During the war, a total of 6 people died on board, they died of disease or in battle.
In 1960, after the Hikawa Maru was decommissioned, it was converted into a museum and opened to the public. In 1961, the "Hikawa Maru" was moored in Yamashita Park, ending its splendid life.
