As a scientist, Gu Yuxiu is internationally recognized as an authority on electric motors and a pioneer in the theory of automatic control. He invented the "General Solution Method of Quadratic Equations" at the age of 23, invented the "Gu's variable" at the age of 26, and began to study the theory of automatic control at the age of 50 Gold Medal.?

He has served as a member of the Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the National Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE), an Individual Trustee of the International Organization of Pure and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM), President of the Chinese Institute of Electrical Engineers and Vice President of the Chinese Society of Engineers. In 1922, he published the modern drama script "Lonely Hung" in the "Novel Monthly"; In 1923, he choreographed and directed "John Zhang" in Beiping, and Liang Shiqiu played a role in the play; In 1924, he choreographed and directed "The National Hand" to be performed in the United States; In 1925, he wrote and directed the drama "The Story of the Pipa", which was performed in Boston, USA by Wen Yiduo, Liang Shiqiu, Bingxin, etc.; In 1925, he wrote and directed "The Death of the Nation"; In 1938, the National Drama School performed his anti-Japanese war drama "Beacon Fire in the Ancient City" in Chongqing, and in 1940 his "Yue Fei" was grandly performed in Chongqing, and then it was adapted into Peking Opera and Han Opera performances. In 1990, his "White Lady" created in the 30s was put on stage by the Shanghai Theater Academy; Soon after, it was performed at the National Theatre of Singapore. He also published historical dramas such as "Xiang Yu", "Jing Ke", "Su Wu", and "Xi Shi".

As a musician, Gu Yuxiu served as the first president of the National Conservatory of Music (the predecessor of the current Central Conservatory of Music) and the director of the National Symphony Orchestra.

He has a deep cultivation of classical music, has read many difficulties in ancient Chinese music scores, and has also translated Jiang Baishi's self-composed music scores into staves and performed them internationally. In 1940, the academic community used his 348 frequency as the standard tone of the Yellow Bell in China. Gu Yuxiu was also the first person to translate Beethoven's Ninth Symphony into Chinese. In 1991, the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing held a concert of his works, and in 2001, the Great Hall of the People held a concert of Gu Yuxiu's works again, attended by the then president and prime minister.

Gu Yuxiu's research on religion is profound, and his achievements in Buddhism have had a far-reaching impact. He traveled all over the famous mountain monasteries throughout his life and had friendships with many famous monks and Buddhas. After half a century of amateur research, he published monographs such as "The Inheritance of Zen Masters" and "The Inheritance of Japanese Zen Masters". In 1979, Gu Yuxiu won great attention from the international academic community with his English masterpiece "History of Zen".
