Chapter 823: The Dusty Past (2)

As early as the 70s and 90s of the last century, about 1.3 million mines and more than 480,000 explosives of various types were planted in the Yunnan section of the south-central border, forming 161 chaotic minefields of different sizes and intermittent distribution, covering an area of about 289 square kilometers.

There are many types of mines and their density is high, and this is one of the difficulties faced by mine clearance on the central and southern borders, because different types of mines have different triggering principles and different means of explosive disposal.

These mixed minefields, which are composed of multiple types of mines, have also caused a headache for these demining sappers, although most of the mines in South Vietnam are self-made, which are very lethal and not easy to control, and many mines have been called "coffin mines" until now.

They are either buried deep in the ground, or hidden in the cracks of the rocks, or buried by the stream, or even hung on trees, and during that time, due to the fierceness of the war, the terrain changed very rapidly, today the small slope, tomorrow is the flat land, today the small pit, tomorrow will be filled, at this time, the minefield is actually only the area where most of the mines exist, because many mines have long been hidden.

Due to rain erosion, landslides and other reasons, not only the performance of the mines themselves has changed, but the buried positions have also moved to the depths, and even been wrapped by vegetation roots, making demining operations more difficult and dangerous.

When these "running mines" are dug up by deminers, it is common for them to be surprised when they go up with a mine detector rod in their hands: because dozens of mines have accumulated layer by layer below in the place where the floating soil has just been blown up.

These mines may not be detonated under the fierce battle, first buried, then washed away by the rain, and then one after another mines flow down the ravine, if there happens to be a large rock across the ditch, like a sieve, the mines are stopped, and so on day by day, and finally piled up into a dense "mountain of mines".

Now, more than 10 years and nearly 20 years have passed, and the Chinese Government has organized several large-scale demining operations to largely remove minefields at ports, passages, production and living areas, and cultivated areas.

During the Sino-South War, there were 48 minefields and 95 minefields in the Yunnan section, covering an area of more than 70 square kilometers, and according to incomplete estimates, there were about 470,000 mines and more than 157,000 other explosives in these minefields.

Even in today's high-tech society, most of the work needs to be done manually due to the relatively complex terrain of the minefields.

Although in order to minimize the risk of the demining operation itself, in addition to the traditional demining methods such as manual search and clearance, rocket blasting and mine clearance, mine clearance bomb blasting and demining, arson and mine destruction, etc., it also does its best to adopt mechanical mine clearance and robot mine clearance and other scientific and technological means, which can be protective clothing, small shovels, small scissors, small red flags, lightning rods, metal dual-frequency mine detectors, are still common mine-clearing equipment.

Because the newly developed equipment of mechanical mine-clearing and robotic demining can partially replace manual labor, but they are only suitable for areas with low vegetation, sparse vegetation and gentle terrain, the risk of demining is still very high, and mine-clearing robots and flamethrowers cannot solve mines buried deep in the soil.

During the mine-sweeping operation, the personnel were highly stressed and concentrated, and they usually rotated every 30 minutes, but in the imminent battle of those years, it was simply impossible to have such sufficient time and sufficient manpower.

According to relevant data, it takes 6,000 yuan to clear a mine, but the cost is only 20 yuan, that is to say, such a low price is enough for backward and poor South Vietnam to lay mines on a large scale, step by step to eat away those deminers who were originally carrying their heads to remove mines, and their lives are already in danger.

At that time, the South Vietnamese War was already in the last moment of victory, just like the seventh year of the eight-year War of Resistance, although they didn't know how long it would last, Lao Zhang's father's unit was capturing a military important place at that time, as long as it occupied here, it took the initiative in this war, in order to be able to advance as soon as possible, the demining task at that time was naturally very frequent, and others did not mention it for the time being. They are actually very glad that they are not dead, but this has only intensified the anxiety in their hearts, Lao Zhang's father is like this, in this countless fears, he finally reached his peak.

Breaking through this peak is naturally a tragic explosion, an explosion that no one expected it to come, when they were escorted out of the line of fire, everything went very smoothly, until an experienced deminer misjudged a mine as a dud, completely detonated the minefield, and this minefield because of groundwater erosion, formed the so-called "mine mountain" before, instantly produced a huge explosion, and even affected the front army, if it weren't for Lao Zhang's father's special position, And the experience is also relatively sophisticated, a second before the explosion, he rolled down the hill and only suffered a little concussion.

"The changes at that time made people have no time to react, the deminers were basically blown up into the sky, and more than a dozen people saw the most broken hands and legs." These words came from the mouth of Lao Zhang's father, who was lucky enough to escape the explosion.

At that time, due to the explosion produced a lot of dust, and the army was also affected a lot, even after the dust settled, no one found Lao Zhang's disappearance, and after witnessing his comrades being killed, Lao Zhang's spirit that had already collapsed to reach the peak was completely pierced, and he risked being found to be a deserter.

And it is precisely because of the reason for the escape that Lao Zhang's father did not leave anything related to his identity in that explosion, and the martyrs also rely on these things to judge, so this is also the reason why the Archives Bureau did not classify Lao Zhang's father as a martyr.

The deserter was shot on the spot during the war, and he was worried that his family would be affected, so Lao Zhang's father did not go home, so he went to his brother's house on a detour, found a way to change his identity, and lived.

However, although Lao Zhang's father started a new life, he did not live for a few more years, and he still died in front of Lao Zhang's mother, but the cause of death was ...... It's weirder than we thought. (To be continued.) )
