The Snow Maiden is a youkai that appears in a variety of legends.
There is a saying called "Snow girl, go home early", which is an old Japanese folk saying.
The Snow Maiden, also known as Snow Hime, who specializes in making ice and snow, is a traditional Japanese-style youkai known to women and children. It lives deep in the mountains, and is similar to a human, with a stunningly beautiful appearance.
Legend has it that they often lure men into the snowy mountains to kiss him in a place where no one is around, and while kissing them, they freeze them completely and take their souls to eat.
Snow Girl is a very tangled youkai in the hearts of the Japanese, she has snow-white skin, beautiful appearance, and virtuous character, but she can take people's lives mercilessly at the moment when you break your oath, beautiful and terrifying.
Therefore, if you encounter the Snow Maiden, you are likely to encounter a terrifying experience full of erotic love.
Secondly, the child of the Snow Maiden is called the Snow Child, and in Japan it is believed that the Snow Child is the youkai who brings the first snow of winter. In addition, the Snow Maidens are all cold by nature, and it is said that they are subordinates of the mountain gods, and they are in charge of the winter snow.
In addition, because Japan is a small island country, the heroism of the mainland country that is frozen for thousands of miles and snowy for thousands of miles is actually something that the Japanese cannot appreciate or experience.
Therefore, the three emotions of fragility, softness, and sadness constitute the soul of the Snow Maiden, which is exactly how the ice and snow in nature react to the delicate character of the Japanese.
The juvenile Snow Maiden is harmless to humans, and the adult Snow Maiden will freeze her favorite human male forever and bring it back to the cave where she lives to be placed for him to see.
In fact, there are many versions of the legend of the Snow Maiden in Japan. The Snow Maiden is a kind of yokai in Japanese folklore, also known as "Snow Hime", "Snow Maiden", and "Snow Lady", which is said to be a subordinate of the mountain god and is in charge of the snow in winter in Japan.
It is claimed that the first person to see the Snow Maiden was a mage named Soki at the end of the Muromachi period in Japan, who was a famous renge in Japan at the time.
He claimed to have seen Snow Maiden in the mountains of Echigo Province (about present-day Niigata Prefecture, a six prefecture in northeastern Japan), and recorded it in his book The Tale of the Princes of Soki.
The Tale of the Soki Princes is also the first book in Japan to record the legend of the Snow Maiden, and it is estimated that the Snow Maiden has existed in Japan for at least 500 years.
There is also a statement that the earliest legend of the Snow Maiden is recorded in Koizumi Yakumo's strange tales, which is not accurate, because Koizumi Yakumo was originally a Greek, and later became a naturalized Japanese citizen, more than 400 years after Sotsumi-neshi was born. Long before Koizumi Yakumo arrived in Japan, the legend of the Snow Maiden was spread among Japanese folklore.
In Japan, the older generation of people believe in the legends of some gods and monsters, and believe that the disasters of nature are controlled by the gods and ghosts, so there is a story of a snow girl in the snow.
Legend has it that in the Heian period of ancient Japan, in the Echigo Province (today's Niigata Prefecture, a six-prefecture in northeastern Japan), there was a woodcutter father and son who lived deep in the mountains and old forests, and they made a living by cutting wood and opening dry firewood shops.
One day, the woodcutter father and son were in a snowstorm while cutting firewood in the mountains, and they were forced to stay overnight in a small cabin in the mountains. The cabin was empty, and the father and son settled down in peace.
Unexpectedly, this small cabin turned out to be the boudoir of the Snow Maiden, and in the middle of the night, a beautiful woman wearing a white kimono with snow-white skin broke in from outside.
The little woodcutter was awakened, and saw that it was the legendary Snow Girl who was so frightened that he couldn't move, and watched the Snow Girl walk to the old woodcutter, bend down, and blow a breath, and the old woodcutter was turned into "chilled" at that moment.
Then, the Snow Maiden walked up to the woodcutter. Maybe it was because she saw that the little woodcutter was handsome, and the Snow Maiden's killing intent suddenly decreased, and she just warned the little woodcutter: "If you tell anyone what happened tonight, I will kill you." With that, he disappeared into the blizzard.
A few years later, on another snowy night, a beautiful young girl came to the woodcutter's house and begged him to take him in.
When the little woodcutter saw the woman who was drinking the dew, he thought to himself:
"Maybe it's probably another way to find relatives and run out of entanglements, so please have mercy on the big officials to take in the cheap concubines, and the cheap concubines will be used as cattle and horses to repay the princess."
Therefore, the little woodcutter gladly accepted it, and soon the concubine changed from being a cow and a horse to being a wife, and finally a child mother.
Because the little woodcutter's wife is beautiful and virtuous, and her complexion is not like the local village girl at all, the little woodcutter's affair has become the envy of everyone in the village.
It's a pity that it was another snowy night, and the little woodcutter who had been hurt by the Snow Girl's weak heart never forgot the nightmare of his father's tragic transformation into "Ice", so he told his wife about the terrible experience of that year.
Unexpectedly, as soon as the little woodcutter's voice fell, the beautiful and virtuous wife suddenly became the hideous snow girl of the year. I saw the Snow Maiden warn the little woodcutter fiercely:
"I warned you back then that if you dared to speak out, I would kill you. For our son's sake, I will spare you one more time. You have to take good care of your son, or I'll come back and kill you. ”
After speaking, he disappeared into the wind and snow like back then. Since then, the little woodcutter's wife has never been seen again.
This ancient legend is recorded in the Japanese yokai novel, the "strange tale of Koizumi Yakumo" in the classical yokai novel, which fully describes the cold and merciless nature of yokai, and reflects the marriage between men and women who are also close and divorced through this story of betrayal.
and the amorous appearance of a woman who is slender and sentimental and dares to love and hate, although this ancient legend is sad and cold.
After all, the old moral belief that "when it comes to promises, you must keep them."
But today, when people's hearts are not ancient, how many people maintain awe and respect for tradition, and even abide by it? There is also a legend that the Snow Maiden would ask travelers to help take care of the child in her arms in the snowy wilderness.
Speaking of which, the drunken man remembered another legend:
Snow Maidens sometimes separate men and women who are in love. In one village, there is a pair of young people who are in love with each other. The man once met the Snow Girl in the snowy mountains and was afraid of being killed by the Snow Girl.
So he avoided looking at the Snow Maiden's face, and knelt down and begged the Snow Maiden to let him live at any cost. The Snow Maiden smiled and said to him for a long time:
"If only you didn't regret it".
The man bowed and bowed to the Snow Girl, expressing his willingness. The Snow Maiden held the man's face with one hand, and the ice cube with the other hand and put it into the man's eyes. The man returned to the village safely, and the Snow Girl did not test him with the usual means.
But the man no longer knows the woman he has always loved. No matter how much the woman calls again and again, the cold eyes are the only and eternal response of the man.
The legend of the Snow Maiden varies from place to place.
In ancient Chinese and Chinese cultures, there was no real sense of the Snow Maiden, probably because the geographical area did not often encounter snow damage.
According to the record of "Qing Jialu", the eighth day of February every year is the birthday of Emperor Zhang, a few days before and after, the local must encounter wind and rain, causing the temperature to drop, which is believed to be caused by the return of Emperor Zhang's daughter Fengshan Girl and Snow Mountain Girl.
Therefore, there is a local proverb that "Emperor Zhang eats frozen dog meat". Another famous goddess of the snow-capped mountains, Parvati, known as the "daughter of the Himalayas", and her husband Lord Shiva live on Mount Girosa and is a powerful and beautiful goddess.
In the legend of Niigata Prefecture, as a spirit in the snow, the Snow Maiden is most afraid of fire and heat, and it is said in Kochiya, Niigata Prefecture:
One day, after a single man had broken the icicles that had been tied to the eaves, a girl suddenly came to him in the middle of the night and asked to marry him.
Due to the cold weather, in order to please the girl, the man specially boiled a bucket of water so that she could take a bath. The girl refused, but she could not resist it, so she jumped into the hot water, and disappeared in the hot water, leaving only slender pieces of icicles to float.
In Yamagata Prefecture, there is a legend about the mountain:
On a snowy night, a girl came to the home of an elderly couple to ask for directions, and the old couple asked her to warm themselves by the hearth. In the middle of the night, the girl wanted to go out again and continue to hurry, the old grandfather was worried about her safety, so he grabbed her hand and tried to keep her, but the girl's hand was cold and made the old grandfather creepy, and in an instant the girl turned into snow smoke and flew out from the skylight where the smoke was released.
In the Tono area of Iwate Prefecture, there is a legend:
On the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, on the winter night of the full moon, the Snow Maiden will roam the snowfield with many children. In addition to the above, in other places, there is still a legend of the Snow Maiden holding a baby to entrust;
There are also snowy night girls who ask for accommodation, and the next dynasty only a wisp of white clothes remains, and there is gold in the clothes. All kinds of legends are rich and interesting. Because the snow is white, the legendary image of the Snow Maiden is mostly dressed in white, or has snow-white skin.
In Gifu Prefecture legend, the Snow Maiden appears in the shape of a snowball. She would come to the mountain hut and ask for water, and if she was given cold water at her request, people would be harmed by her. But if you give her a hot cup of tea, or invite her to the fireside to warm up, she will leave in fear.
There is a poem in Min Xu Kun's "Lucky Huaqing Palace": "The snow maid's mound head Yao grass is together, and the jade lotus in the concubine pool is declining." ”
Legend has it that as long as you embrace the Snow Maiden with a sincere heart, you can melt the Snow Maiden. Where the Snow Maiden melts, she will be reborn as a human being.
There are two more short stories about the Snow Maiden.
The first story goes like this, it is said that there was a man who got lost in a snowstorm and strayed into a deep mountain.
At this time, a beautiful woman appeared in front of him, and this woman was actually the Snow Maiden.
The Snow Maiden said, "Will you exchange your most precious thing for my clothes?" ”
The so-called heroes since ancient times are sad to pass the beauty pass, not to mention that this man is not a big hero or anything like that, he is just an ordinary man, so the man can't resist the temptation of the skin under the snowgirl's silver kimono, so he agrees.
The man said, "Aren't you cold?" The only thing I treasure most is this gun. ”
The Snow Maiden just shook her head faintly and said, "It's not that."
"The money? This straw hat? ”
The man was a little confused, so he asked again.
However, the Snow Maiden still shook her head again and said:
"No, none of that is what I want."
Then the Snow Maiden took advantage of the man's time to speak and came behind the man, and said:
"It's your hot, blood-dripping heart."
So the next day, a man's body was found on the mountain, and the Snow Maiden's silver clothes turned into a pile of snow.
Exactly what this story says will be explained later, and then let's move on to the second story.
It is said that a man named Moji saw a beautiful woman sitting on the snow in the middle of a snowstorm, so he went up to him and asked.
"Girl, why are you sitting here alone in this snowy day?"
The girl heard that she was asked, and with that beautiful face, she said pitifully:
"Uh......h I feel like I'm lost......"
Moji then asked her where her family lived. After thinking about it, the girl pointed to the deep mountain in front of her, and did not say a word.
Although some people don't quite understand how to stay at a friend's house in the deep mountains and old forests of the black hole, Moji thinks that no matter how he says, he can't let a little girl stay alone in this ice and snow, right?
So he sat the girl in his basket and carried her to the mountains.
In fact, the girl is the Snow Girl, who sucks the soul of the man while he waits for him to put her down from exhaustion.
The man's steps became slower and slower, and the snow girl's smile became colder and colder. Finally, Moji opened his long-closed lips and turned his head. The Snow Maiden greeted him with a big smile.
Moji was a little worried about whether the girl would feel cold, so he turned around and asked:
"Girl, do you feel cold?"
The Snow Maiden was stunned and did not speak. She didn't know what to say to Moji.
Moji continued to walk forward, asking her "Are you cold?" along the way. "Are you hungry?" "Come on, it should be almost there......
The Snow Maiden only nodded in response, her voice getting quieter and quieter, and then she simply stopped speaking.
At this time, Moji was a little uneasy. When I looked back, I saw that there was nothing in the back basket, only a basket of snow.
Moji used his love to melt the cold heart of the Snow Maiden.
These two stories, the former is to warn those who go out on a snowy day; The latter thinks that as a woman, the Snow Girl should also have feelings.
As the saying goes, the greatness of the human heart is the fusion of all things, in fact, whether there are really those gods and monsters in this world, the drunkard has always felt that if they really exist.
Then I believe that they are also beautiful and kind, and they are virtuous, and they will be common in the world. So, as the second story says, even if it's a real youkai, it's the kind of bad youkai with an impure purpose.
As long as we are willing to treat them with our sincerity, they will still be touched.
In other words, youkai aside, it's the same for human beings, the so-called I treat people with sincerity, and people treat me with sincerity.
The communion between human beings is mutual, and it is not a unilateral contribution by one party, nor should it be a unilateral acceptance by one party. (To be continued.) )
