Chapter 8: Camp Winston
When the tornado finally passed, Chen Zhong and Kassandra arrived at Warren's house, and the rest of the team members ate a meal of boiling water and biscuit porridge to celebrate.
Garnett took out the map left by Lieutenant Hammond and pointed to the location marked on the map and said, "Hopefully we can find some food, ammunition, and gasoline in Provincetown." Hammond had marked it on the map as a supply point, and if his contact Williams was the same Major Williams I knew in the National Guard, we might really get some help. β
Murphy habitually mocked, "Are we going to rely on a dead man's map now?" β
Warren said to Murphy, "Let me remind you that the dead man you said died to protect you. β
"Get in the car and go, I really hope we can get some help in Provinceton because we don't have anything but hope right now," Garnett said. β
β¦β¦
A wooden board sign in front of the fortifications at the gathering reads: Camp Livingston, weapon-free area, please be prepared to surrender all weapons before entering.
Chen Zhong looked at the sign and said, "Are we going to surrender the gun?" β
Garnett looked at everyone and said, "Do as the locals do." β
When everyone got out of the car and came to the gate, a woman and four men rushed out of the house next to the gate with guns and shouted: "This is private territory, you are not welcome here, where are you going back and forth?" β
Garnett, who was standing in front, raised his hands to show that there was no malice and said, "We're looking for Major Williams, Joe. Williams. β
The female guard asked, "Who are you?" β
Garnett replied, "I'm Charles. Sergeant Garnett, Georgia National Guard. Williams and I have known each other since before the Zombie Apocalypse broke out. β
Several guards discussed, and the female guard said, "Our men will go and inform the major." You're here and waiting, and if you dare to move or someone shows your weapons, we'll open fire, you know? β
Ganedh nodded and said to the team, "Don't be rash, everyone. β
Warren said: "Everybody's calm, Charlie can handle it. β
Murphy habitually taunted Warren, "Oh, it's all Charlie?" β
Warren looked at Murphy and said, "That's right, if you don't shut up your sister, your sister will call you **** in the future." β
Watching Murphy deflat, the rest of the team laughed.
A few minutes later, a white man with a military cap on his head walked out with a vigorous step.
"Oh my God, Charles. Garnett's ghost has come to the door. I thought I wouldn't see you anymore, at least not when I lived. β
"Hello, Joe, I didn't expect to see you again, it seems that you and I have persevered."
"That's true, think about the last time we were together, you fished me out of the zombie pile."
Garnett raised his aching arm and said, "Can I put my hand down?" β
Major Williams said to the guards, "Put down your guns, this is my old buddy." β
Williams asked, "How did you end up here?" β
"Actually, I'm running something for the government, and we came here from New York because we haven't had enough food for a long time," Garnett said. β
"New York? It's been a long time since I've seen anyone coming alive from East Mississippi. Come in and tell me about your experience, and I'll get you something to eat, but your car has to be parked outside, and of course, you're going to have to turn in your weapons. β
Everyone came to the room inside the gate, the female guard took a metal detector to check, everyone handed over all the weapons on their bodies in turn, and only 10,000 were still taking things out of their bodies.
Ten thousand handed over sniper rifles, pistols, broadswords, short saws, slingshots, daggers, and after thinking about it, he took out a two-meter-long thick iron chain from his crotch.
As soon as Williams led everyone into the camp, he heard three men shouting outside the barbed wire fence of the camp: "Colonel, let's come back, we know that we are wrong, Jacob is a crazy cult leader." β
Williams reluctantly said to the guards: "Check on them, if it's okay, let them in, maybe there are more lost lambs who want to come back." β
On the way to the restaurant, Garnett said to Williams, "I feel relaxed without weapons." β
"When we first started at the camp, everybody was well armed," Williams said. One day, a man killed his wife's lover, and the result mutated, and we died 5 people. That's why we made a rule that only guards could carry weapons inside. Later, a trade party came and snatched the guard's gun, and this time 7 people died. So it was decided that no one in the camp was allowed to carry weapons. β
Garnett agreed: "It's going to be a better and safer life, and being armed all day has an impact on people." Maybe I'm naΓ―ve, but it does give me hope. β
Williams pointed to the patrol outside the wall and said, "Our patrol patrols the neighborhood twice a day, and our fence is strong, so zombies are not a problem for us, and we are most worried about humans right now." β
"The camp is self-sufficient, with leftovers and garbage going into a biogenerator that can supply electricity for four hours a day," Williams said. No one has died here for more than a year, and everyone can sleep peacefully. β
Everyone in the team nodded in approval.
At this time, the three people who were shouting outside the wall just now also came to the restaurant to eat, and Warren asked, "What's the matter with these people?" β
Williams replied, "We have a bit of a conflict with the preacher who came in before. He's incorrigible, he thinks that the zombie cataclysm is actually the second coming of Christ, and that we should save the zombies instead of killing them, and he calls the zombies reborn, which is really a madman. Later we kicked him and his followers out, knowing that crazy ideas spread very quickly in the last days. β
"I'm not an expert on the Bible, but I'm sure there's no mention of zombies in the Bible," Warren said. Then why did you let a few of them come back? β
"Their families are still here, and I know they're going to go out for a while and they're going to starve and be scared, and they're going to have an empty stomach," Williams said. Don't talk about them, you guys eat something first, I'll treat you to the first meal, and then we'll have to trade. β
As they sat down at the table with their plates full of food, Garnett said to Williams as he ate his bread, "Our destination is the California Center for Disease Control Research Institute. β
Williams said seriously: "You will never be able to go to California, I have heard from other forces that there are millions of super zombies concentrated in the west, because the cities are eaten up, so they flock to the wilderness to form super zombie swarms, and it is said that the entire West Coast is a forbidden area." β
"Even so, we're going to give it a try, and Murphy is the only chance we can be cured," Garnett said. β
Williams persuaded, "If you die, you can't save anything, we need you here, I need well-trained soldiers and experienced doctors." β
Garnett replied, "Your suggestion is tempting, but we're going to move on." Actually, we need old-school tough guys like you along the way. β
"I don't know, I've seen countless times my hopes dashed," Williams said. The people here depend on me, and I'm here to help them. β
Williams stood up and said, "You guys go and rest for a while after eating, and sleep peacefully, I'll consider what you said, and we'll continue to talk tomorrow." β
Everyone had a beautiful meal, and Warren took a few keys and distributed them to everyone, "I know you haven't slept for a long time, so let's go and rest now." β
Kassandra and Chen Zhong took the key and walked to the room, opened the door and saw that the room was very narrow and the furniture was simple, a bed and a bedside table with a lamp.
"Chen, remember the time we were in Illinois?"
"My dear, although this world is full of zombies, I don't believe that every time we make out, there will be zombies causing trouble. This time I want you to taste the power of Chinese kung fu. β
"Dear Chen, you never said you could do kung fu."
"Haha, my dragon stick method is not visible to ordinary people, you have to try your depth."
ββ¦β¦ Bad apple. β
While the two were in the heat of their fight, there was a scream of a living person and the roar of a zombie from the corridor outside the door.
"Damn, I'm going to kill all the zombies in this world." Halfway through the battle, Chen Chong was in a very bad mood.
Kassandra said as she got dressed, "The camp is very well defended, how can there be zombies?" β
Chen Zhong got dressed, picked up the lamp on the table and said, "Anything can happen in this damn world, let's go out and have a look." β
