Chapter 369: Strange Book House

That day, as usual, Professor Spoerings came to the used book street in the city.

He liked it very much, after all, he was a book collector, and this love undoubtedly came from his profession as a history professor teaching at a university.

In the past few days, because of the recurrence of tuberculosis, he has recently recuperated for a period of time, and basically has not returned to school for a long time, so he is relatively leisurely.

It is precisely because of this that he was able to come to this used book street so leisurely.

There are a large number of old-fashioned bookstores in this used book street, some of which are hundreds of years old, and there are countless books here, from medieval manuscripts, to even older religious prints, to long-lost alchemical secret books, and even the chronicles of a certain family.

Today is not a double holiday, and there are surprisingly few pedestrians on Used Book Street.

It was about three o'clock in the afternoon, and he entered a familiar bookstore and searched through the sea of books.

When he found two old manuscripts that could be read, he walked to the counter of the bookstore, and unexpectedly found that the boss was gone, and not only that, but all the sounds disappeared quietly.

"All of a sudden, there was no sound."

The sound of cars, people, and noise in the distance is no longer audible.

However, Professor Sberlings didn't feel anything too strange, and his gaze was drawn intently

It was a book wrapped in cloth, revealing only a part of the black decoration, but it somehow attracted his attention.

Sberlings was intrigued, or rather seduced by the book. The book must have been the devil's bait, and he was hooked and then made a move that surprised himself.

He stole the book secretly. Then took the book home. But Sberlings didn't expect it at the time that this was the beginning of a nightmare.

Sberlings should have thought from the beginning of what a stupid thing he had done.

When he got home, he couldn't wait to open the old book and read it.

Very interesting...... After some reading, Sberlings discovered that the book was a pseudo-chronicle of historical records. But it is also mixed with the style of the chronicles. According to the "name" on the spine of the book, this is a "dynastic chronicle".

-- The book imagines a mysterious tribal civilization, or an ancient kingdom, which originated long before the Sumerian civilization, perhaps six thousand years ago, or even earlier, this mysterious and ancient tribal civilization, which originated in what is now south-central Siberia, and they are called "daevites".

The civilization of the Daevites clan developed very rapidly. There were already rudiments of the ancient kingdoms, and while the daevites, like all other civilizations, evolved and changed over time, they seemed to have some unusual consistency. The usual fixed features of the Daevites civilization in all periods included martial arts, aggressiveness, ancestor worship, domination of a large slave population in the center of the town, terrible human sacrifices, and the implementation of apparently effective thaumaturgical rituals.

Especially the sacrificial activities. There are also strange rituals, which are often repeatedly emphasized and described in the book...... The Daevi race is often on a foreign campaign. Most of the slaves plundered after the war were used for sacrificial and witchcraft worship.

The priestly class of the Daevi race, who like to use the most vicious torture or inhumane, cruel and uncivilized ways to abuse their captives, believe that only those who have been brutalized will nurture evil will be nurtured from their own negative feelings. The priests and sorcerers of the daevi race are the best at manipulating these wills of resentment, anger, and fear, and create a magic called witchcraft.

Although the daevites were a confederate civilization (union of city-states), they seem to have consistently reverted to a theocratic aristocracy, with the daevites having a strict hierarchy. Like the Brahmin system in India, it was divided into a caste system in which shamans and priests were the first estate, and nobles, warriors, and commoners were divided into subsequent classes.

They seem to have had some habit of having their names hereditarily replaced by a group of prominent people, because some of the high priests and nobles have had their names and positions repeated throughout the millennia......

"In the xx year and xx month, the great witch dragon performed a ceremony in the xx place to celebrate the king's birthday......"

"In the xx year and xx month, the enemy country was conquered, and 6,000 people were captured, and the great witch dragon ordered that more than 6,000 captives be sacrificed to my king Wannu."

"In the xx year and xx month, the great witch dragon ordered the establishment of xxx, and it was established for forty years, and on the day of completion, the three thousand untouchables and captives who participated in the fortifications were all killed and buried alive ......"

Here, for example, this great witch dragon is supposed to be the head of the priests of the ancient kingdom of Daevites, whose name is called "shenzong" and appears on the pages of the book many times, and if you calculate the time in detail, at least there is a difference of hundreds or even thousands of years.

It is impossible for a person to live for that long unless he is immortal, and Sberlings speculates that this ancient civilization may have had the priest leaders of the past reuse the name for the sake of their theocracy.

The book also mentions some interesting points, such as the supreme ruler of this ancient civilization, not a human, but a creature that crawled out of the mysterious Yellow Spring Gate, which came out of the Yellow Spring Gate every hundred years and died after hundreds of years, but even if it died, it could be resurrected from the depths of the Yellow Spring Gate again.

"Giving the ruler the divinity of immortality, completely monopolizing theocracy and secular power, is really an interesting fiction ......"

As a historian, Sberlings still admires some of the descriptions of this ancient civilization in the book, at least the person who wrote this "novel" has a considerable amount of historical knowledge, otherwise it would not have been possible to design such a subtle fiction even if he made it up.

Especially for an alternate ancient civilization, some of the descriptions are too serious and careful, and the outlines are quite clever, and all aspects of the fabrication are perfectly integrated with the history of Central Asia. It's as if there really was such a civilization in the history of mankind!

Even if he is a professor of history, he has to appreciate the author's ingenuity.

And the author has done a great job of detailing this alternate history, and even Sberlins is very curious about the ancient kingdom in the story, and feels that there is a lot of potential to be explored.

However, he also had a trace of doubt in his heart, was this thing really an fiction written by some boring person? Or maybe it's the product of the boredom of a historian or compiler.

He pondered these questions as he continued to look at them patiently.

The ancient kingdom of Daevites was originally located in south-central Siberia, and the name "Siberia" probably comes from the Old Turkic word meaning "land of tranquility". It is also said that it is "Siberia", which comes from the direct descendants of the Xianbei people - the Xibe people. And on the ancient map of China, Siberia is called "Luo Wilderness".

As a result of subsequent environmental changes, as well as historical changes, the daevites moved from Pakistan and China in the east to a vast area of the Carpathian Mountains in the west.

In particular, around 213 BC, the core of the Daevite civilization was destroyed by the army of the Chinese general Qin Kai, and entire tribes were forced to carry out mass migrations, some of them leaving Siberia, others going deep into the interior and hiding in barren lands to escape war and killing, but it was not long before they began to establish kingdoms again, practice barbarian rule, and continue to advance culture and technology.

Sberlings felt a strange sense of agitation when he saw this, and he could smell a strange smell in the air, like the rancid smell of animals, or the smell of dried blood.

At first, he thought that he was not too sensitive, so he felt intolerant of the smell in the house, after all, a single man like him, living alone outside the home, in terms of personal life, it is inevitable that it is a little simple. It's not surprising that there will be odors in the house, such as smelly socks. However, Ms. Linda (60 years old, chubby, good-natured, nagging) who came to clean the apartment said that the smell in the house was disgusting. Even Sberlings wondered, and according to Ms. Linda, it tasted clearly wrong.

On the first day, Sburges didn't make any discoveries, but he soon realized that the source of the smell was from the mysterious manuscript.

"There's something wrong with this thing!"

At first, he just had such a simple thought, he didn't finish the book at that time, but simply flipped through the back, and found that the book was very strange, and many of the pages behind it were empty, so he didn't continue to read.

And when he realized the problem, he read the book from beginning to end, and soon, he found a strange problem.

"I remember when I read it before, this last page was not there, but here...... But a few more words came out. ”

Yes, there were a few more words on the blank page, and Sburgers was the kind of person who was so confident in his memory that he believed he couldn't be mistaken.

So, the question arises again, what is the matter with these extra words.

Could it be that he was really dazzled, and when he arrived at this time, he was a little puzzled.

The more he thought about it, the more strange he felt, and Spurges picked up the book and walked to the location of the second-hand book street, but when he returned to the original place and wanted to find the second-hand book store, he found something strange...... The bookstore was gone. (To be continued......) R1292
