Chapter 10: True and False Sun Tzu and the Art of War

"Is the author of "The Art of War" Sun Wu Sun Wu?" Marcy asked suddenly. Pen @ fun @ pavilion wWw. biqUgE。 ο½‰ο½Žο½†ο½

"Of course, didn't I tell you, I originally suspected that it was Sun Bin, but later archaeology found that the art of war written by Sun Bin was another book." Le Su replied as a matter of course.

"I know that!" Ma Qian said to a book, "It is mentioned here that the content of the "Art of War" expounds on the events of the Warring States Period, and Sun Wu cannot predict what will happen after his death, so some people argue that Sun Wu does not exist in history at all, and his book and events are forged by the Zongheng family. ”

"Hehe, the posterity is also powerful enough to falsify and write such a magnificent book." Le Su disagreed, "Many ancient Chinese books are created by groups, and this book may have been revised by later generations, but since it is called "The Art of War", the main credit should still be Sun Wu's." ”

"That can't completely prove the existence of Sun Wu, for example, this book says that Sun Wu and Wu Zixu may be the same person, and "The Art of War" is actually Wu Zixu's work."

"How is this possible? It's outrageous! ”

"How could it be?!" The meticulously observant Ma Qian pointed out: "If you think about it, Sun Wu and Wu Zixu always appear at the same time in the history books, Sun Wu was originally introduced to King Wu by Wu Zixu, and after Wu Zixu's death, Sun Wu also withdrew from the stage of history. ”

Le Su thought about it carefully, it was really like that, but it was not something they wanted to investigate.

"Let's focus on the question of whether the Art of War is thirteen or eighty-two, right? If you can't find it again, you'll have to wait until tomorrow to come back. ”

After searching for a long time, the two finally found clues on an online forum, mentioned in a post......

There are many records about the thirteen chapters of the Art of War.

"Historical Records - The Biography of Sun Tzu Wu Qilie" mentions the "thirteen articles" of the art of war twice: one is that Wu Wang Lu said "the thirteen articles of the son, I have seen them all". The second is "the world's so-called division and brigade, all of which are the thirteen chapters of Sun Tzu".

"LΓΌ's Spring and Autumn Period - Shangde Chapter" records that "Sun Wu, the general of King Wu and Lu, is also a 5,000-word art of war". The "five thousand words" here also refer to the "thirteen articles".

Cao Cao's "Brief Preface to Sun Tzu" said: "Sun Tzu, Qi people, famous martial arts, made thirteen articles on the art of war for King Wu Lu."

All of the above accounts indicate that there are only thirteen chapters in the Art of War.

As for the eighty-two articles, which first appeared in the "Hanshu - Art and Literature Chronicles", the author Ban Gu believes that the "Art of War of Wu Sun Tzu" has a total of 82 articles and nine volumes.

When Emperor Cheng of the Han Dynasty, Ren Hong discussed the book of soldiers and set the book "Eighty-two Articles of the Art of War of Wu Sun Tzu".

There is a view that the "Eighty-two Articles of the Art of War of Wu Sun Tzu" was passed to the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, and Cao Cao believed that the world "lost its purpose" to the "Art of War", so he deleted sixty-nine of the articles and only noted the "thirteen articles", which is the origin of the thirteen articles today.

Despite this, the authenticity of the "Eighty-two Articles of the Art of War" is still doubtful, and the "eighty-two abridged theories" are not very convincing.

In September 1996, it was reported that 82 copies of the Art of War of Sun Wu had been found in Xi'an, and that Zhang Jingxuan, the owner of the copy, was the grandson of Zhang Ruiji, a Jinshi of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty and a famous person in Shanxi and Shanxi.

In the thirty-second year of Guangxu (1906), Zhang Ruiji was transferred to the county of Hancheng, and on the way to the post, he had a good eye and bought the eighty-two chapters of the "Art of War of Sun Wu" and the nine volumes of Han Jian.

In 1923, Zhang Ruiji resigned and went home to study and sort out these Han Jian, and after Zhang Ruiji died, his son Zhang Lianjia followed his father's instructions and finally compiled them into a book.

During the "Wenge" period, Zhang Lianjia was afraid that the Han Jianbing Book would "cause trouble", and decided to adopt the strategy of "destroying the Jianjian War Art" and took the initiative to hand over the bamboo slips and burn them.

However, when the supervision of the "Red Captain" was negligent, Zhang Lianjia took out a bundle of bamboo slips from the fire that was about to be ignited, that is, the thirty-first article of the "Eighty-two Articles".

So this piece of Han bamboo slips was very fortunate to be preserved, and together with the manuscript of Zhang Ruiji's father and son to sort out the bamboo slips, it was passed to Zhang Jingxuan, the third generation of the Zhang family.

If these artifacts had proved to be authentic, the Art of War would have been eighty-two instead of thirteen, but it didn't take long for this sensational news to be questioned by many people. Many historians and military experts have examined it from a scientific point of view, and it turns out that it is full of loopholes.

First of all, Zhang Ruiji's subsequent life experience is very suspicious, according to research, Zhang Lianjia and Zhang Ruiji have no blood relationship at all, and the so-called Zhang Lianjia is Zhang Ruiji's son is pure fabrication.

Second, from a scientific point of view, it is impossible for bamboo slips to survive 2,000 years on the ground without decay without scientific storage conditions, not to mention that they have been well preserved after so many tosses.

Third, the original copy of his father's manuscript in the "12th year of the Republic of China" taken out by Zhang Jingxuan, according to expert research, was actually copied after the 70s of the 20th century, which shows that the manuscript is not genuine.

Fourth, pre-Qin writings were generally not written by a single person, but were mostly written by people of the same faction. Even the "thirteen chapters" of "The Art of War" can also be seen to have elements of posterity, not to mention the "eighty-two articles" with more length.

According to Zhang Jingxuan, Sun Wu not only completed 82 masterpieces independently, but also named "Sun Wu's Art of War" after himself, which also has many irregularities.

In short, the newly discovered "Eighty-two Articles of the Art of War of Sun Wu", both in terms of the discovery process and the content structure, there are many suspicious points, and its credibility is also reserved.

…………

"Uncle Sun's "The Art of War" eighty-two chapters are this Zhang family version, I think it's fake." Lesu said to Marsie.

Ma Qian nodded, "I also think that the process of the Zhang family obtaining eighty-two articles is full of loopholes. ”

"More is not necessarily better, it is estimated that someone expanded the thirteen articles to eighty-two, and as a result, the extra sixty-nine articles had almost no value, and they were slowly lost, just like Sun Bin's military book before."

"It would be nice to see the full text of the eighty-two manuscripts collected by Zhang Jingxuan, or directly witness Zhang Ruiji's acquisition of Han Dynasty bamboo slips." Marcy stared at Lesu and said.

"How is that possible? Besides, we are not professionals, and even if we witness it, we can't tell the authenticity of the bamboo slips. Le Su spread out his hand, shook his head and said, "We can only look at the results of other people's research and make a judgment." ”

"Isn't it okay to be reincarnated in a dream?" Marcy asked, puzzled.

"Dream reincarnation is not so convenient, very troublesome and has a lot of uncertainty." "Simply put, it is a matter of not changing history to succeed, and sometimes even going back in time is itself a ...... that contributed to the occurrence of history," Lesu explains.

"You mean fate."
