Chapter 57 - Impossible to Prevent
Mayor Hardison sat at his desk and looked helplessly at Chief Gordon and the large number of police officers he had brought with him. These police officers poisoned the mayor's office, and they had the momentum of a street fight.
And now, Mayor Hardison is rolling up his sleeves and watching as a light blue liquid from a syringe is injected into his vein. This is nearly the tenth vaccine he has received tonight. What annoyed him even more was that although Gordon didn't say it explicitly, he knew that the vaccines came from some vigilante dressed as a bat, and he was the one he hated more.
"You're getting too nervous, Jim." Mayor Hardison said disgustedly.
"We're very nervous, but if you've had a few fights with that madman, you'll probably think we're not doing enough to prevent it," Gordon admitted. ”
"I'm a Gotham, Jim. I've watched every metamorphosis that has taken place in Gotham. Mayor Hardison said, "Of course I know what the Joker has done." But at the end of the day, he's just a human being, isn't he? A little crazy, a crazy person, a criminal. ”
"An unprecedentedly dangerous criminal." Jim Gordon added.
"Yes, he's dangerous." Mr. Mayor exclaimed, "But lo and behold, you have turned this place into a fortress." Outside, there were scattered helicopters monitoring without interruption, and all kinds of sirens around my office could be piled up so that even flies could not fly in. I mean, he's not a fly, he's a big living man, and he doesn't even have the slightest chance in this case. ”
Gordon sighed. Mayor Hardison didn't understand, but it wasn't something that would make him understand with a few words of argument. Mayor Hardy is right, the Joker is just a person after all, and you shouldn't find so many reasons to be so afraid of him. But only these people who have fought with the Joker countless times on the front line, and lost important things countless times, know what is really terrible about him.
"Guys, you're all in place!" Director Gordon stopped arguing and ordered loudly.
The officers scattered and went to stand guard.
Roy suddenly asked coldly: "May I ask, have you tested the water supply system of the building and the water sources in all the water pipes?" ”
Gordon said, "Of course, we've eaten the joker before. We now have people who re-test the water source from time to time, and we test it every time we take the water and pour it. We're not going to do it again. ”
Roy nodded.
The tasks assigned to Roy by Director Gordon were quite free. Gordon trusted the young consultant's judgment and execution skills, so he left the position to Roy of his choice. He can go to inspect any place he feels is wrong at any time, or he can choose to stay in a certain position and remain motionless.
Roy walked out of the mayor's office and circled the hallway twice, finally noticing the elevator.
He pressed open the elevator door, walked in, pressed the close button, and felt it with a frown.
Then he stood on tiptoe and lifted the skylight of the elevator.
Not surprisingly, on top of the elevator stood Batman wrapped in a black cloak. In front of him, all the cameras in every corner of the building were connected, and he was watching the situation in all the locations intently.
"So, you found out." Batman said without a hint of surprise.
"The quality of the elevator." "I can feel the excess mass, and the moment I walk into the elevator, I can feel the weight of another person." ”
After a pause, he changed the subject: "I guess you haven't been spying on the mayor here for a day or two, right?" ”
"Since the events in Falcone." Batman said, "I suspect he and Falcone may have colluded as well." But that doesn't matter now, he's going to have to survive the clown's hands anyway. ”
"What did you find?"
Batman shook his head and said, "Not yet." Tests have shown that Mr. Mayor has not been injected with the clown's poison twenty-four hours ago, as he did last time, and I have confirmed that there is no problem with the water source. I even dropped the cleaner's detergent downstairs to make sure the ingredients were correct. ”
"I heard you vaccinated the mayor." Roy said.
Batman said: "Yes, the Joker's known poison and various variants of vaccines, but they are still not safe and secure. Every time you feel like you're sure, he can make something new, and you'd probably better go back and check out, Mayor Hardison seems to have gone out to the bathroom. ”
"So, it looks like you're not monitored in the toilet." Roy complained, "I thought you'd be able to monitor without dead ends." ”
With that, he got out of the elevator and walked in the direction of the toilet.
There were also two fierce guards standing at the door of the toilet, one on the left and one on the right, and they all greeted Roy politely when they saw him approaching. Although this detective consultant is not very popular in the Gotham Police Department, he is still quite well-known and everyone knows him.
Roy asked, "The mayor just went in?" ”
"Yes."
"How long have you been in?"
"Two or three minutes."
Roy sniffed, "Don't you think there's a smell of it?" ”
The two looked at each other for a moment and said, "So it does seem that there is a smell of smoke?" ”
There was a faint smell of smoke in the air, which seemed to come from the inside of the toilet.
Roy realized that something was wrong, and walked quickly into the toilet, the smell of smoke getting stronger with each step he took.
"Mayor Hardison? Are you in there? Roy asked in a booming voice.
There was no response.
Only the only one in the toilet was locked, and Roy stepped forward without saying a word. The two guards didn't seem to think it was appropriate, but before they could say anything to stop it, Roy kicked the door open.
The smoke was so thick that the choking smoke almost obscured the view.
Mayor Hardison sat on the toilet seat, his eyes closed, his head tilted to the side, unconscious. On the polished tiles of the floor lay a half-extinguished cigarette butt, which seemed to be the culprit.
"This," the two officers stammered, speechless.
"Still angry, call an ambulance!"
Only then did the two come to their senses and run out.
Soon, Gordon followed with a wave of police officers, and Batman followed.
"What's going on?" Gordon asked.
Roy picked up the cigarette butt on the ground: "This, it should be the murder weapon." Mr. Mayor was an old smoker, he just couldn't resist not smoking all night, and in the end his cigarette killed him. ”
Gordon asked, "Poisoned?" But we've already injected him with multiple Batman vaccines, haven't we? ”
Batman took the cigarette butt in his hand and conducted a simple and rough analysis and inspection on the spot. Within two minutes, he had the results.
"You can wait for the results of the formal analysis." "But I can be pretty sure that there is no clown gas in the cigarette butts." However, the nicotine content in this cigarette is enough to kill a cow. ”
