Chapter 40: First Encounter
One day in late October, the sky was covered with dark clouds, but it was not raining. There was a dull atmosphere in the air, as if there was an invisible force pulling countless threads from the sky of Gotham City, carrying the hearts of everyone in Gotham City, controlling every heartbeat.
Dure, depressing, and with an eerie style that suits Gotham City one after another. In this atmosphere, everyone is very easy to feel panic and uneasiness, and people have no intention of talking, and they are walking briskly on the street with their heads down.
Roy won't forget that this was the day he first met that guy. It was the day he first received a case against that hateful but terrifying terrible fellow.
Early in the morning, when Director Gordon called him as usual to go to the crime scene, Roy could clearly hear that something was wrong from the director's tone.
"Hurry up to 401 Fingal Ave., murder."
It is simply like going through the procedure, and it does not contain even the slightest bit of the relevant facts of the case. But Roy clearly sensed from those words that Director Gordon was desperately trying to control his emotions, extremely unstable, like emotions forcibly blocked in the floodgates.
He knows Gordon. Jim Gordon is a very good police detective, and he has a strong sense of self-control over his emotions, not just because he was born this way, but also because of the dark moments he experienced with Batman in Gotham, which taught him how to hold on to himself in the darkest places.
But now, Director Gordon revealed an unconcealed emotion from his short words. Ordinary people may not be aware of it, but Roy can clearly feel the overflowing anger and uneasiness.
What could it be that could disturb Gordon to this point?
Soon, the answer was revealed when Roy arrived on the scene.
It was a white-painted house with a red roof, which had been cordoned off as a crime scene. As Director Gordon led Roy into the house, he briefed him on the case, as is customary. But today, his narrative is distinctly intense.
"The deceased's family of three, parents and a poor child, oh my god they were just sleeping in the bed and were dragged out of bed," said Gordon, "it was the brute!" His handiwork! I knew as soon as I saw it, guy."
It was the first time Roy had seen Gordon like this since he had met him, not even when he was facing a lifetime in prison not long ago.
Approaching the restaurant, Gordon sighed and said, "You may have to be prepared for what you see next." ”
Roy walked in and gasped when he saw the three bodies lying on the table.
A couple in pajamas, and a child who should still be in elementary school from his height, a family of three lying miserably on the table. The most terrifying part was that all three bodies had no skin.
Yes, there was no dough, it was cut off along the edges of the face, and apparently by hand.
Cruel, bloody, are the only words that can be used to describe the scene.
"It's a beast." Gordon muttered indignantly again.
Roy was silent, frowning.
"Why is there a table on the table?" Roy pointed to the four plates in the middle of the three corpses and asked, "You say they were dragged from their beds?" ”
"Yes, we found that there were obvious signs of someone sleeping on the bed and being forcibly dragged out of the bed." "The initial inference of the time of death was also in the early hours of the morning, and no one was going to eat dinner at that time," Gordon said. ”
"You're saying the killer pulled them all up and gathered them at the front of the table for the victim to prepare a table of dinner?" Roy asked, "What's the purpose of doing this?" ”
Jim Gordon said with a heavy expression, "There is no purpose. If I had to say one purpose, it would be entertainment. He is such a beast, he never kills for any special purpose, the only purpose of his actions is to have fun, he is purely a demon. ”
"Sounds like you know who the killer is." Roy frowned and asked, "Who is it?" How do you know? ”
"Of course we do." Gordon said, handing Roy a bag of evidence, "because he left his business card." ”
Roy turned the bag over and saw a playing card and a king lying quietly inside, with the word "Joker" written on it.
It's just an ordinary poker card that makes Jim Gordon so excited.
Roy had looked through many archives of Gotham's past, and of course knew what the city's deepest nightmare was. This playing card is a sign of the emergence of such a person.
"Here he comes again." Gordon said, "Joker. ”
When he pronounced the name, it was as if the crazy, violent laughter sounded in his ears, and it was like the scream of the devil in hell. Roy was now completely audible, hidden behind the anger of the hardened Director Gordon, another deeper emotion, and that was fear.
Not bad, fear. For this man known as "Joker", no matter who he is, Hero Director Jim Gordon has a deep fear of this man in his heart.
Roy didn't go any further. He circled the table twice, scrutinizing each corpse. He then went to the deceased's bedroom and picked up a cell phone from the bedside.
It's the husband's mobile phone lying on the dining table, which is easy to see by looking at the contents of the phone. Roy browsed the contents of the phone for about half a minute, and then silently stuffed it into an evidence bag.
"How? What did you find? Gordon asked.
Roy was silent, his eyes scanning the room like a scanner.
Suddenly, he spoke up and asked, "Have you noticed the carpet in the corner?" ”
Director Gordon looked in the direction of his gaze into a corner of the bedroom. The bedroom was covered with a white velvet carpet, and the carpet did tilt unnaturally in the corner of the wall.
"If someone lifts it from this position too many times, it's going to happen." Roy strode up as he spoke, crouching down and lifting the carpet, revealing the wood-colored floor beneath.
"Maybe it's just that the owner of the room used to lifting the carpet from this place when he was cleaning?"
"Maybe." Roy said, lying down on his stomach, tapping his face to the floor, and then slammed his fist on the ground.
Then, he half-squatted up and said, "Then you say, does the owner of this house also have the habit of prying this floor when he cleans it?" The two pieces that are connected here are clearly loose. Aging? No, it can't be, the other pieces around are still very strong. Loosening can only be caused by human factors. ”
Roy didn't stop as he explained, and quickly pried the board open, reached in and felt for a transparent plastic bag to come out.
"I think we just found out what that madman's motive might be for killing." Roy turned around, a ridiculously funny clown mask in a dusty plastic bag on his hand, "I'm sure the deceased we just died tragically may have been the Joker's man many years ago." ”
