Chapter Seventy-Nine: Swimming Against the Current
Not to mention the changes about Lin Yiru, the three of us finally found a little bit of physical feeling in the continuous exercise. The feeling of complete numbness gradually faded, and as the sensation returned, all kinds of pain followed.
Only then did I realize that there seemed to be quite a few barbs on top of the interceptor net, which was supposed to be used to hook something that washed down from the upstream. Thanks to this thing, I had a lot of wounds all over my body. Fortunately, these wounds are shallow and should not cause any serious consequences. But that doesn't mean they won't hurt
Coupled with the soreness in my muscles, I was almost in pain. This process lasted for a long time, and only after they had subsided did I be able to wring out the soaked clothes with Chen Zaihai and the others. Unfortunately, we don't have any fires at all, but I have a windproof lighter in my pocket, so I might be able to use the water.
But it's a rocky beach, and there's nothing around it that can be broken to ignite. It was also unrealistic to rely on just a lighter for heating, so we had to give up.
But the temperature around us was still very low, and after a while, we were so cold that our faces were red and our necks were thick. Needless to say, the frequency of the crown trembling is almost catching up with the pile driver. Wringed out clothes on the body do not have any effect on heat preservation at all.
As I said before, it's a rocky beach with a raging underground river just a short distance from your feet. When I looked at the river from the shore, I once again marveled at its vastness, no matter how I looked, there was no end in sight, and there was nothing but darkness on all sides and the rumbling sound of water.
This river must have been formed by the convergence of groundwater, and perhaps this is the final destination of all underground water systems. As for how deep that waterfall will be, we don't have the ability to find out at all. We're not going to go crazy and try to climb down. The temperature here is also related to the groundwater, which itself has penetrated through many underground tributaries, and some even through many capillary underground crevices, and has long lost a lot of heat.
If it weren't for this huge underground river, the temperature here wouldn't be so low. And we don't even know why we're here, it's just inexplicable. We were still in that dry canyon before, why did we come to this inexplicable place in the blink of an eye?
It depends on the situation that we fell from the top of that canyon, and the location of the second train may be a bit troublesome, and the crust in that place may have been relatively fragile, and this huge underground river is directly below that canyon. It was the fall of the train and our actions that completely shattered that crust. We just fell right down the road.
I then turned my gaze back to my back, there seemed to be a lot of space behind the rocky beach, after taking the miner's lamp to shine through, I found that the back of the rocky beach was actually rising in a staircase shape, I couldn't see how high it was, but it looked like the terraces unique to the southern hilly area. Layers of reddish-brown volcanic rock form a natural large staircase, but each staircase is more than half a person high.
At first glance, the back of this rocky beach looks almost entirely volcanic rock, but after closer inspection, I found that there are actually a lot of basalt and bell rocks mixed in it. There seem to be several geological formations in this place at the same time, and it is likely to be a large geological structure cave in general, like the one we did the train crossed.
But I can't analyze any specific things, these are all learned from Lin Yiru. After all, I'm just a layman, and those things just now may not be the right thing to analyze. And it doesn't do much to the current situation. After that, I told Chen Zaihai about my thoughts, after all, he had studied geology, and he should be better than me no matter how he said it.
But once again, he disappointed me gorgeously, and after listening to this, the guy just nodded, saying that it was still possible. But it seems to us like a very lame perfunctory. Actually, this guy doesn't know anything at all, right? I sighed helplessly. It's already colder around, and this guy's unreliability makes my heart cool even more.
With nothing to gain, we had to sit down and check what was left of our equipment, and the more I looked at it, the more desperate I felt.
Our situation is really very troublesome, and we have no supplies, and now we are separated from Talia and them. It literally killed us, all the food, batteries, and ammunition were there. We only carry a very small portion with us. As for the medical kit, there was no one at all, and before I climbed on top of the train, I was too troublesome to give it to Talia for safekeeping.
There was nothing left on the body except three guns, bayonets, samurai sabers, and sapper shovels. One bullet is missing, and I suddenly thought of those terrible bugs, and immediately began to pray secretly in my heart that we would not be allowed to bump into these ancestors. Although there is no need to worry about water and fresh water for the time being, the food has definitely become the biggest problem. Each of us had only a little compressed dry food left that was about to be soaked in water, and this amount might not be enough to last even two days.
Talia they should soon find out about our disappearance, but can't be counted on just yet, who knows how far from here is the place where we fell? Talia wouldn't be stupid enough to chase after the hole we fell down from, it would be a suicide.
Compared to food, the problem of lighting is also very prominent. We only have two miner's lamps, one is in Chen Zaihai's hands, and it has been flickering on and off for a long time, and it looks like it may go out at any time. The other one was mine, but it was extinguished when it first fell. I don't know if I can fix it, so I gave it to the engineer first, hoping he can get this thing right.
Without the light in such a place, it is almost indistinguishable from dying. The two of them seemed to be very depressed, feeling like they had been sentenced to death.
"Alright, don't get discouraged here. We can't change anything, so let's figure out a way. "Chen Zaihai tried to encourage both of us.
In fact, in this situation, the odds of us surviving are already very low. As long as we can't join the rest of us for two days, we can only wait obediently to die. Whether it's Ivan, who doesn't even know if he's descended, or Talia, who has lost contact, the odds of finding it in this labyrinth-like underground system are infinitely close to zero.
"In my opinion, we can only take one step at a time." Chen Zaihai proposed. "We're going to freeze to death here, so let's stay as far away from the river as possible."
There is still some truth in what this guy said, it's too cold around here, and you can't do it for a lifetime with clothes like this. This is a volcanic area, so if we're lucky, we'll be able to come across a few more hot springs.
The warrior agreed, but he thought differently. He said that since the interception net was set up by the Japanese, it means that there must be some kind of facility in the vicinity. Otherwise, they wouldn't have been able to make such a net here without reason. It was likely that the facility was upstream, and the net was built for safety, probably for fear that something important would accidentally fall into the river.
This is a direction that Chen Zaihai and I did not consider at all, but it does make sense. And since there are traces of Japanese here, it means that they have explored this area very deeply. We may be approaching the essence of the whole mission. There is probably an answer to what the Japanese want to do, and it is impossible not to be interested in this matter today.
And the area that has been explored by someone always gives people a sense of security, and the traces of people in the expedition are the best hope after all, especially for the kind of expedition team that is almost desperate. If there are traces of people, it means that there may be a lot of things that can be used in front of you. But if that's the case, we can't get too far from this underground river.
After our unanimous discussion, we decided to stay away from the place where we could hear the sound of the water. Anyway, this cold and damp rocky beach is absolutely unstoppable. After trying back and forth many times, we finally found the ideal distance, which was right on top of a volcanic stone staircase. We can walk on it very calmly.
Although the height of more than half a person was a troublesome challenge, we still managed to climb it with a lot of effort. The temperature in this vicinity has really risen a lot, about ten degrees. In our current situation, it's not a very ideal temperature, but the frequency of our shivers is clearly full. That's all we are content with.
And I have to mention here that because of those terrible insects, this time we were very careful to check these stone steps again, and confirmed that they were really only stones before we dared to climb them. I thought it was almost a reflex, and after that, whenever I saw red, I would subconsciously increase my vigilance.
Finally, as we started walking, the engineer gave me back my lamp. He said that this thing was just a little bad contact because of the water, and he had already fixed it. I was overjoyed and immediately put this treasure away. Now Chen Zaihai's one can still be barely used, so let's keep this thing for the time being.
Another good thing is that the stone steps seem to follow the underground river, which makes it easier for us to move forward. We started our own journey 'against the current'
