Chapter Sixty-Eight: The Death Rift and the Poisonous Woodlands
When Xu Mo first came to the Chapel of the Wish of Light, he rode the Red Dragon Tesmerisa and observed the terrain around the Chapel. The Chapel is located in the eastern middle of the Eastern Plaguelands, and the Hand of Tyr is located to the south of it, running north-south, and behind them there is a continuous mountain range that runs vertically from north to south.
At the top of the mountain range is the Ebon Knights' floating castle, the Ebon Fortress. The mountains held back the undead plague to the west, and the three major forces prevented the Scourge from crossing the mountains. To the east of the mountains to the Endless Sea, lies the last green wilderness farm in the Eastern Plaguelands.
Both the Silver Northern Expeditionary Army and the Hand of Tyre rely on the food production here to sustain their armies. Even human civilians in other parts of the Plaguelands will be sent to the wilderness farms to fend for themselves after arriving at the Chapel of the Light's Wish.
Directly below the Knights of the Black Blade, at the waist of this mountain range, there is a large natural hillside flat. It was once the Death Knight training camp of the Knights of the Black Blade, with a human village, a mine and a lumberyard underneath. Humans here rely on mining and logging to live a peaceful and uncontested life.
At that time, the Knights of the Black Blade were not of this name, they were the Death Knights of Accherus under the command of the Lich King. The Death Knights built a wide ramp between the camp and the village. The Death Knight often rode the Nightmare Beast and used the ramp to swoop into human villages at high speed to slaughter the living creatures, which was used to train the new Death Knights.
The humans in the village were quickly slaughtered, and the human survivors were horrified to refer to the Death Knight training camp as the Death Rift. This means that as soon as the camp door is opened, then humanity must face the death knight and usher in a doomed death.
Near this human village, near the mine, there is a huge cavern that cuts through the belly of the mountain. Another exit from the cave connects to the valley woodland in the heart of the mountain range. The area of this valley woodland is huge, almost the entire Hand of Tyr region, and it is a highly toxic woodland. Beyond the mountains to the north of the poisonous woodlands, you reach the border of Quel'Thalas.
Speaking of the Death Rift and the Poisonous Glades, one of the Lich King's right-hand men, the Archlich K'Γthugad, who has now been resurrected by Arthas, and the Knights of the Black Blade.
The Frozen Throne had just been cast into the River by the Dreaded Demon Kil'Gardan, and the spiritually powerful Lich King had not only researched the Plague of the Undead, but also summoned all the mighty in the world of Azeroth who could feel him.
As a member of the Council of Mages of Dalaran, Kel'thugad came to the Frozen Throne and became the Lich King's most powerful subordinate in pursuit of powerful undead magic.
After this, the Lich King demanded that Kel'thugad return to the northern continent of Lordaeron and secretly begin experimenting with the effects of the undead plague. The undead plague is a catastrophic plague on a large scale, and it is impossible to tell the actual effect of it in a war just by secretly testing it in a laboratory.
Charged with a mission, Kel'thugad knew the difficulty of the task, and he needed a secluded, vast site to experiment with the undead plague. Eventually, Kel'thugad made his way to the easternmost part of the northern continent of Lordaeron, and chose the Poison Woodland, a valley in the center of the mountain range with only a cavernous passage connecting to the outside world.
At that time, the highly toxic woodland was not called the highly toxic woodland, but a valley woodland with a warm climate and the fragrance of birds and flowers. The valley is huge, but not populated, and the people here are isolated from the rest of the world and feed themselves on the fruits of the woodlands, which is a real paradise.
Kel'thugad, with his Church of the Damned, built tall towers here and began experimenting with the undead plague. Various types of undead plagues have turned the valley woodlands into dead grounds, and even the most resilient plants cannot survive the long-term contamination of the undead plague.
Because of the enclosure of the surrounding mountains, a green mist began to fill the woodland throughout the valley. This green mist is mixed with all kinds of plagues and poisons, and no living thing can survive in this environment, and it has become a "poisonous woodland".
Despite the fact that the Poison Woodland is only connected to the outside world by a cavernous tunnel, K'l'Comfortgard fears that an attack from outside will ruin his research. Thus, after Kel'thugad used the undead plague to turn the central and eastern parts of the kingdom of Lordaeron into the Eastern and Western Plaguelands, respectively, the Lich King sent a floating fortress and the Death Knights of Archerous to Kel'thugad.
Kel'thugad had the floating fortress levitate over the mountains, and had the Death Knights of Acheros set up camp on the slopes of the mountain's loins, guarding the entrance to the outer caverns of the poisonous woodlands. This is the real cause of the formation of highly toxic woodlands and death rifts.
Later, Kel'thugad was killed by Arthas, who was then the Crown Prince of Lordaeron, and Darien Mograini, Grand Lord of the Death Knights of Acherus, was awakened by the spirit of his father, the Ember Bridler Mograine, during his attack on the Chapel of Light's Wish.
Liberated from the Lich King's mind control, Darien Mograine led the Death Knights of Acherous to sweep the Death Rift and Poison Glades in the Scourge Realms on the occasion of Kel's death, defeating the necromancers and the Cursed Cult entrenched in the two Scourge territories.
At the same time, Darien Mograini renamed the Death Knights of Acherus to the Knights of the Ebon Blade, abolished the Death Knight Training Camp in the Death Rift, and brought all the Death Knights back to the Stronghold of the Ebon Blade.
Also known as the Dark Blade in the lingua franca of the Continent, the name Black Blade represents the Death Knights' endless grief and remorse for their weapons that have been stained with the blood of many innocent people.
Although the Knights of the Ebon have evacuated the Death Rift, the poisonous glades are infested with ghosts, zombies, undead cave demons, and scattered cursed wizards. Even if the undead plague in these two places has almost dissipated, there will be no humans entering this place at all, and it is a true borderland.
While Death's Rift and Poison Woodlands are borderlands, it's not easy to occupy them. The Death Rift is better to say, only a few undead beasts infected by the undead plague. However, it is only a hillside flat that can barely be used as a camp for a few hundred people, and there is a constant fear of the undead in the poisonous woodlands.
A single death rift alone is absolutely not enough to satisfy the survival of tens of thousands of elven refugees. However, if you want to use the poisonous woodland as a shelter, you will need to make great sacrifices to clean up the entire poisonous woodland, and countless high elves will die in the mouths of the undead creatures in the poisonous woodland.
Of course, if the elven refugees can really clear the entire poisonous woodland of the undead, then they have earned themselves a real place to live. And as soon as the Scourge withdrew from Quel'Thalas, they would be able to cross the mountains to the north of the valley and embark on the road to recovery.
"Cole, do you know what you're talking about?" Baron Terosos pointed at Xu Mo's nose in anger, "They are civilians, not warriors. You are sending them to their deaths, and there will be thousands of elven civilians who will die at your suggestion! β
"We High Elves are different from humans, even civilians, and their long lives are enough for them to learn a combat skill. Bows and arrows, vindictiveness, magic, arcane, we are not as fragile as you think, Lord Baron! Among the three elven elders, the leader of the elder, Alonis Sunstrider, bowed slightly and said coldly.
"You...... Do you really know what the Death Rift and the Toxic Woodlands are? Baron Tairosos trembled with anger, he didn't expect that the person who first refuted him was not Xu Mo, but this elven elder.
"The Plaguelands are adjacent to Quel'Thalas, and although Silvermoon has withdrawn from the Alliance, there is no shortage of war intelligence from Lordaeron and the Scourge Legion. How could we not know, where the Death Rip and the Toxic Woodland are? Another elven elder, Herrien Silverlight, said with a wry smile.
"And you're still accepting Cole's advice?" Baron Tairosus glared at One-Eyed and said incomprehensibly, "Even if you are not afraid of death, what about the food of tens of thousands of elven civilians?" What about talismans? β
"Captain Cole will help us get the food and weapons we need in the early stage, and as for the back, we elves will solve these two problems by ourselves!" Sarina Mingyi, the only female among the elven elders, proudly raised her chin, revealing her slender snow-white neck.
"Good, good, good!" Baron Terosus laughed angrily, "You elves are not afraid of the dead, so why should the Silver Northern Expedition bother!" β
After Baron Tairosos slammed the door and walked out, he suddenly realized that something was wrong, this was his office, and if he wanted to go out, Xu Mo and the three elven elders had to go out. However, it would be too embarrassing to enter the door again at this time, and the one-eyed dragon stomped his foot and left for the time being.
Seeing that Baron Tairosos was all angry, the three elven elders were a little embarrassed, after all, this was someone's territory. After a deep groan, it was the leader Alonis who spoke first: "Captain Cole, when are we leaving?" β
"Except for a few messengers, you lead the other elven civilians to set off at once. I have commanded a companion to wait for you at the breach of death. There, the Knights of the Black Blade will give you some help, and as for me, I will stay here to help you win the assistance of other continental forces and obtain the necessary food and weapons in the early stage! Xu Mo said with a smile.
"Thank you again for your help to us, and may the sun of Sindore bathe you forever!" The three elven elders thanked respectfully again.
After the three elven elders left, Xu Mo sat down in Baron Tairosos' usual chair, he still had something to look for this one-dragon-eyed baron of the Silver Northern Expeditionary Army.
"You're not gone yet!" After a while, Baron Tairosos, who had calmed down, re-entered the door, and when he saw that Xu Mo was still there, he immediately said angrily.
"If I leave, who should send the food and tents you promised to give to those hundreds of elven civilians!" Xu Mo said with a hippie smile.
"I will do what I promised!" Baron Tairosos stared at Xu Mo, his gaze gradually sharpening, "It's you, Cole!" You should know that the elven civilians are not just a few hundred people, but thousands. When they're all here, how are you going to solve the rest of their lives and let them all die in the poisonous woodland? β
The smile on Xu Mo's face slowly retracted, and he stood up and shook his head, "Your Excellency, do you know why these arrogant elves refuse to follow your advice, and instead would rather pay countless lives to clean up the poisonous woodland?" Because what you give them is charity, and what I give them is help! β
