Chapter 301: The Story with Peeta

On a rainy, cold afternoon, Katniss meets Peeta.

At that time, Katniss went to the public market to exchange some of his sister's shabby baby clothes for food, but no one cared. Although I had been to the mine with my father a few times before, I was still scared to come alone in this rocky, rugged place. Dressed in his father's hunting suit, the rain had completely soaked it, and Katniss felt cold to the bone.

For three days, the family drank only hot water and ate a little of the cold and dry mint leaves that Katniss found in the corner of the cupboard.

When the market closed, Katniss shivered from the cold and her clothes fell into the mud. I didn't dare to pick it up, for fear that I would never be able to get up again if I planted it on the ground.

Katniss couldn't go home, and went back to face her mother's straight eyes and her sister's sunken cheeks and chapped lips.

Katniss could not set foot in the door, the house was choking with black smoke, and the house had run out of coal, so he had to pick up some wet wood from the edge of the woods. Katniss is hopeless!

Wandering alone in the mud behind the shops, which sold to the richest men in town, the merchants lived upstairs. Any act of stealing is forbidden in the 12th District, and the thief is executed.

The thought crossed Katnis's mind that maybe she could find something to eat in the trash, and no one cared.

Maybe you can find some leftover bones in the butcher's shop, or some rotten vegetables in the grocery store, no one will eat them, but the family is hungry and they can eat them. Unlucky, the trash can just emptied up.

As she passed by the bakery, the freshly baked bread gave off an enticing aroma that made Katnness dizzy.

The oven was in the backyard, and the golden flames gave off a thick warmth, gushing out of the open kitchen door, and a warm current and the smell of bread swept by. Katniss seemed to be hypnotized, dazed and dizzy.

But the cold, wet rain struck her face like cold fingers, forcing Katniss to regain consciousness.

Lifting the lid of the trash can, it was empty, too unforgiving.

Suddenly, a voice screamed. Katniss looked up and saw the baker's wife shouting, telling her to go away or call the sheriff.

She also said it disgusted her to see wild children picking in her family's garbage cans.

The foul words struck Katniss one after another, powerless to resist.

Carefully closing the lid of the trash can, Katniss stepped back, and Katniss saw a little boy with blond hair poking his head out from behind his mom looking at him.

Katniss had seen him at school, he was in the same grade as herself, but she didn't know his name.

Then. His mother returned to the bakery, still muttering. Katniss walked behind his pigsty, under an old apple tree on the other side of the pen, leaning feebly against the trunk, his eyes never taking his eyes off.

At the thought of returning empty-handed, Katniss suddenly couldn't hold on, his knees went limp, and he collapsed under the tree.

I can't take it anymore. Too tired, too weak, too uncomfortable.

Let them call the sheriff and send me to a welfare home. Or just let me die here, in this rain.

At this moment, there was a commotion in the bakery, and Katniss heard the woman screaming again, and faintly heard the beating and scolding.

Katniss was wondering what was going on when she heard someone coming towards her from the mud. It must be the baker's wife. She's going to take me away with a stick.

But it was not her, it was the boy, who was carrying two large pieces of bread in his arms, and the bread must have fallen into the fire, and the skin was charred black.

His mother was still shouting, "Take it and feed the pigs." You fool, a decent guest wouldn't buy this burnt bread! ”

He began to tear off the batter in large chunks and throw them into the pig's trough. The bell rang at the front door of the bakery, and his mother hurried over to greet the guests.

The boy glanced at the bakery again, as if to check if there was any, and threw a large loaf of bread in this direction, and soon another, with a swift movement. Then he ran back to the bakery and closed the kitchen door behind him.

Katniss looked at the bread and couldn't believe her eyes. The bread was so good, except for a bit of mush, it was perfect. Did he let me take it?

Definitely! and the bread was thrown at his feet. While no one was looking, Katniss quickly stuffed the bread into her clothes, wrapped them around her body, and hurried away.

The heat of the bread burned her skin, and Katniss wrapped her tighter and tighter, clutching the life-saving thing tightly in her arms.

When I got home, the bread was already a little cold, but it was still hot inside. Katniss placed the bread on the table, and Polym reached up to tear off a piece. Katniss told her to sit down and wait for her mom to come along.

Poured hot tea, scraped off the mus, and Katniss cut the bread into slices.

One by one, the family ate the whole bread.

The bread was so delicious.

In the evening, Katniss took off her clothes and slowly dried them by the fire, climbed into the bed, and fell into a sweet sleep.

The next day, reflecting on the incident, it occurred to Katniss that perhaps the boy had deliberately charred the bread.

He knew he would be punished, but he threw the bread into the fire and gave it to himself.

Spring seems to have arrived overnight, with warm winds and white clouds.

In the school hall, Katniss rubbed shoulders with the boy, his face already swollen and his eye sockets dark.

In the afternoon, when Katniss picks up Polym to go home, he sees him looking at him across the playground. Their eyes met for only a second, and he quickly turned his head away. Katniss lowered her eyes in embarrassment.

It was at that moment that Katnis saw the first dandelion of spring.

With her thoughts racing, Katniss remembered the time she spent in the woods with her father, and suddenly she had an idea to find a good way to keep the family alive.

In the woods there is a hunting bow left by my father.

To this day, Katniss still can't forget how much she missed that boy.

Peeta, he gave himself bread and hope.

Dandelion, remind yourself that you are not dead yet.

In the hallways of the school, Katniss had seen him more than once, and the interlacing of eyes was only a fleeting glance.

Katniss always felt indebted to him, and Katniss didn't like to owe anyone.

If I had thanked him in some way, I wouldn't be so conflicted now.

A few hours ago, when Effie pronounced Peta's name, Katniss felt mixed and conflicted.

Throw yourself into the arena with Pita and fight to the death, how can you thank him in such a place? In any case, cutting his throat is contrary to treating each other with sincerity.

Eric's volunteering was a relief to Katniss.

But suddenly, mixed feelings returned, unlike Pita who gave life and hope to his family, but Eric, who helped himself and his sister.

Katniss didn't understand how Eric felt to himself as if they were going to face a life-and-death struggle between the two.

Is he pretending? Out of all twelve districts, out of twenty-four candidates, there was no one who didn't know that it was a game of only one alive.

Even a man and a woman in the same district face the cruel choice of killing each other.

The Hunger Games are staged every year, and there is no shortage of alliances and betrayals from the same district.

Anyway, since he asked, Katniss had a choice, and told Eric about his relationship with Peeta.
