Chapter 12: A Big Guy

In the evening of this day, our explorer ushered in the climax of the visit. It's not the peak, it's not the number of people, but an important person. The top commander and decision-maker of this project, accompanied by Captain Zhou, came to our exploration pit.

At the military base where the non-disclosure agreement was signed, I heard the word Seven from the colonel. Seven, is the general term for our project, and the military is used to calling it Expedition Seven, or Operation Seven.

Here I want to explain the composition of our personnel here. The core personnel of this project should be those of us who are engaged in archaeology and those who are experts in materials science. However, because of our different majors, we are looking for different directions and playing different roles in this project. In addition, the place where we work is extremely far away, and our archaeology profession is almost working in the center of this project, that is, this project hidden under the camouflage net, which is centered on the dozen or so exploration parties we excavated, and extends to the outside in all directions. Those who are experts in materials science work on one side of the entire fringe of the project. I knew that direction, but never been. It's not that my curiosity has disappeared, or that I'm still hoping to know less secrets, so that I can have less trouble and a chance to get out of here. Instead, it is full of sand and dust all day long, which can be said to be the dirtiest and most tiring place in the entire project environment. The archaeological team members who have been there are secretly glad when they come back that they are not the ones who do the coolies. On the other hand, our work is racing against the weather, and I really don't have time to pass it.

We were the only ones in the entire project who didn't have a military background. The rest of the personnel are all professionals transferred from the army. For example, the engineering company that actually participated in the excavation of exploration pits. Responsible for the operation and maintenance of the hoisting system of the military factory technicians, in the early stage of installation and commissioning of the hoisting system, this kind of technical personnel is very many, now there is no time to excavate new exploration, and there will be no new hoisting equipment, this kind of personnel has been greatly reduced, and the personnel are relatively fixed. Here I would like to say that at first I had a lot of complaints about this huge lifting and transportation system, but after this period of work, I have a new understanding of the efficiency of this lifting system. I have a deep understanding of an old saying. Sharpen the knife and do not mistake the woodcutter. It's true, maybe the preliminary preparation work is very time-consuming, and the waste of resources is huge, but the excavation efficiency is too high.

There are also motor troops responsible for transportation, logistics and supply units, medical teams, communications units, and so on. There is even a company responsible for the operation and maintenance of the power station. It's a diesel power station, and it's the source of the rumbling noise here day and night.

No matter which group of us we are, we are all part of this project, but the division of labor is different, and the level of confidentiality authorization is different. Surprisingly, the two groups of people who did not have a military background were the two groups with the highest level of secrecy authorization. It's also interesting that both of us, who don't have military backgrounds, are deliberately avoiding the name Seven. Our archaeology major called this place the desert archaeological team, and even the name of the place was deliberately hidden. Materials science experts refer to this place as a quarry based on their current harsh working conditions. Probably everyone doesn't want to tie themselves too tightly to this secret.

The one who really leads, manages, and coordinates the work of all parties is a working group of the military. They rarely show up, maybe there are too many troops here, and even if they come to check on the scene, I don't know the newcomer.

The person who came to us today is the leader of this working group, the No. 1 leader here.

This is an emaciated middle-aged man. I'm nearly 1.8 meters tall, and I seem to have to look up slightly in front of him to meet his eyes. His military rank is very high, I won't talk about the specifics, indeed, only a soldier of this level can quickly mobilize various resources and make decisions at the first time on any situation that arises on the scene.

It was the first time I had met this person, and he gave me the impression that he was calm and decisive. He was very kind and concise, and asked me a few questions individually, mainly about the progress of the project and the specific work plan for the future. I didn't find any large artifacts in this expedition, so I made my judgment based on the few pottery and tiles that had been unearthed. To sum up, there is one sentence: there should be traces of human activity here.

The chief personally came to inspect the work, which was flattering to squad leader Liu. I didn't feel much of it, and the rest of the work was still going on in an orderly manner.

Just because you dig into the wet sand doesn't mean you dig out the water. If you dig more than ten meters to produce water, then it is not called a desert. Moreover, the wet sand layer is only the water vapor in the sand layer, which has nothing to do with the water source. But at this level, the safety of the exploration pit is much better than that in the quicksand layer, the difficulty of scraping the soil is greater, and the protection of the pit wall is much better. Not to mention that people feel much better when they work in a humid environment. So the progress of the project has not slowed down.

One day in early November, I was drawn in by the excited cry of a warrior. I went over to take a look, told them to stop what they were doing, and immediately notified the archaeological team Captain Zhou that there was a discovery.

A soldier went up in a cage to report the news, and I had no ready-made tools in my hand, so I took a soldier's shovel and scraped it carefully on a piece of sand. Our pit is over fifteen meters deep, and the ground is made up of a mixture of fine sand and dirt. In fact, when I found out that the excavation face was in this condition, even though I had not yet seen the mature soil layer, I had already expected that the excavation pit I had excavated was close to the mystery. This estimate was not simply made by me, but almost everyone had this hunch when I reported the progress of my work on this pit and the changes in the excavation level one day at the work meeting every night. Although no one knows what lies beneath the sand and how deep it will be, the appearance of this layer of soil is indeed a sign of a revelation.

The first thing that appeared was a stone ball the size of a football ball, and I cleaned the sand from it with my hands, and found that the surface of the stone ball was carved with radioactive lines. The stone ball was only half above the ground, and because the tools were not in my hands, I was worried about the damage to the thing, so I didn't continue digging, but carefully cleaned up the ground around it.

At this stage of work, it is not suitable for this team of engineers to intervene. The first thing I want to do is confirm if this big guy exists on its own or as part of a series of existences. If it is the former, after the excavation of this big guy, this team of engineers will continue to work here. If it is a series of existences, the rest of the work will be mainly done by me, and most of the engineers will withdraw from this exploration pit, leaving only a few auxiliary personnel.
