Chapter 117: The Hall of Silence
After the routine dizziness of teleportation, I'm in a strange place.
It's a bit inaccurate to say that it's strange, vaguely I seem to have been to a similar scene, but at the same time I'm sure it's just a place like this, not just this place.
After a moment of reflection and reminiscence, I finally remembered that the place that was similar to this in my memory was the temple at the top of Mount Il, or the fortress monastery of the Space Marines. I haven't been to other Stronghold monasteries, but I've heard that most of the Telltelloclan monasteries are basically built to the same specifications.
It was an extremely large hall with heavy stone slabs on the floor, flanked by thick stone pillars, and the towering dome required a great effort to look up. The light here was a little dim, and we were in the brightest position near the pulpit and the altar, and looking to the other side, it was so dark and deep that it was difficult to see anything for a while.
The silence was eeri, and I could only hear myself and the two people around me breathing.
But my psionic vision has seen that there are hundreds, if not hundreds, of souls nearby, all of them are confident and powerful, and they obviously belong to battle-hardened warriors. At the same time, the warrior's instincts made me aware of a stinging of unkind gazes coming at me, making my skin itch all over my body—a normal warning sign of danger that would have sent a chill down the back of my head.
Yes, this is a nest of interstellar warbands, and there are a lot of Space Marines who take it for granted, but their reactions are a little different from what we expected.
"Are we here early? They didn't look ready to welcome us. Eddie whispered.
I don't think that psionic beacon was set up for us. We rushed into here without saying hello, and it was already very tolerant that people didn't come directly to the fire.
By this time, my eyes had adjusted to the darkness, and I could make out the tall silhouettes in the center of the hall. There is no doubt that they are Space Marines. Roughly counting, the number is more than two hundred and five, and slightly less than three hundred.
Well, today is the first time I've seen so many Space Marines in my life. Normally, the Space Marines who descend from the sky and bring us endless hope are usually only one or a few squads, but the Space Marines, who have as many as thirty or fifty people and as few as ten people, can complete the difficult task that thousands of our defense forces cannot do. With more than 200 Space Marines in front of us at this time, I simply thought that there was nothing in this world that could stump our war. Perhaps, as long as you walk through in a neat queue, you can trample under your feet any force that dares to confront the Empire!
But if you think about it, the number of people present is actually not very large. According to the Astarte Codex, a standard interstellar warband should have more than 1,000 people in ten companies. With only that little at the moment, could it be that they have more troops scattered elsewhere?
Looking closer, I saw something strange again. The Space Marines in the center of the hall clearly have two different colors of livery. Accounting for the vast majority of them, more than two hundred, the armor of those warriors does not meet the standards of the Space Marines. Their armor has no bright and conspicuous ornamentation, borders, or insignia, and is painted in a dark gray and black color, as if they could dissolve into a dim background if they were not careful. Their livery was clearly intended for stealth purposes, and it is conceivable that their armor provided good camouflage protection from the dimly lit interior of the ship, making them difficult to detect by mortal soldiers, who could only observe with the naked eye.
And the other part, they only have the appearance of less than forty people. Their livery looks much more normal, with a dark blue color overall, reminiscent of the popular parent group of Ultramarines, with the warband emblem on the chest being a fist holding lightning, and the bone-white spaulders with numbers written on them and the black border around the spaulders are also popular or standard styles for interstellar warbands. I didn't recognize the markings of this warband, at first glance they looked like another small warband that was not very well-known, but one thing caught my attention, and then I was shocked - there were thirteen Terminators in this small team of only thirty people!
I naturally know the importance of the Terminator's armor. Even an established warband like Space Wolf rarely dispatches more than ten Terminators at one time. Many secondary warbands and even entire regiments can't come up with ten sets of Terminator armor. This wargroup can come up with thirteen Terminator warriors, shouldn't it be to send all the most elite veterans of the First Company? That's too much extravagance.
Going back and looking at the larger ones, I noticed something unusual. These Space Marines with concealment livery only wore real power armor from the front of the queue of more than fifty people, and the remaining two hundred or so people were wearing only carapace armor, which was the Scout's outfit. In a normal interstellar warband, only recruits who have just undergone transformation and do not have much combat experience will wear carapace armor to serve as scouts. Considering that this is an important battle that even the Space Fortress has been dispatched, it is naturally impossible for them to bring new recruits to train, so is it possible that this wargroup is actually in extremely bad equipment? Not even a normal power armor? Compared to the smaller group, it's really shabby.
But on closer inspection, I saw something unusually familiar in them, something indelible from my childhood. The fur cloaks of those men, I could tell which were mammoths, which were frostwolves, and which were from rock leopards, ice bears, and saber-toothed tigers, and their pendants made of beast claws, teeth, and tails might not prove a man's prowess to a space marine, but in my homeland they were clearly the symbol of the most powerful hunters.
Yes, they are from the same world as me. If it weren't for that childhood incident, I would have been able to stand there as one of them.
When I looked at them silently, they were naturally looking at us. I don't know what they're thinking, but so many people's eyes coming together makes me feel stressed. Normally, when I meet with Space Marines, I am usually followed by a large number of defenders, so that our side looks somewhat imposing, but at the moment, there are nearly three hundred steel giants with a height of two and a half meters, but there are only three of us mortals with a height of one meter and seven.
"Who are you? Mortal. A deep voice sounded, like whispering behind my ear, and scared me into a cold sweat.
When I turned around, there was no one behind me. On the other hand, on the podium more than ten meters away from us, there was a not-so-outstanding Space Marine, wearing power armor in concealment paint, and even standing under the light did not have any eye-catching features. When I looked at the podium before, I was sure I had seen him, but I thought it was a statue and didn't pay close attention.
What a terrible feeling of existence?! Not only can he hide his vision, but he doesn't even have his reflection in his mental vision. I have no doubt that he could have cut the neck of an entire regiment of troops with a single dagger.
Add stepped forward, bowed slightly, and said, "You must be Master Voda, the leader of the Silent Blade, and Adrius from the Inquisition salutes you. These two were my companions, Lieutenant Commander Ilshan of the Imperial Defense and Captain Gremion of the Imperial Navy. ”
"Yes, we have been in touch for a long time, although you arrived a little earlier than expected. Welcome to the Hall of Silence. Master Voda on the podium said.
Even though it was so far away, the subtle sound that seemed to come from between the lips was still clear. Even though I was able to confirm the distance with my eyes, I still felt like my ears were being blown and itched.
