Chapter 44. [Case 8] under the tower
After getting off the road, I turned to a cement road that was probably built in the 90s, and there were many cracks on that road, which is probably a good thing done by those big cars when the bridge was built. The place where I got off the road happened to be on the north side of the Yangtze River Bridge in the Big Buddha Temple, and to the left was the Cuntan Container Terminal, and on the right was our destination. On the way, I met a lot of aunts and aunts who came together to chat, and many of them had a child on their backs. Hu Zongren rolled down the window and asked them, how should I go to a certain village and a certain society? The aunts estimated that they hadn't seen a man for a long time, so they rushed to tell Hu Zongren how to go. Following everyone's instructions, we quickly drove to a village-like spot halfway up the mountainside, and the rest of the road could only pass the width of the largest three-wheeled motorcycle, and if we rushed up and encountered a car, there was really no way. So after thinking about it, I decided to park my car here and walk up the hill, there are few people in this place, and it is estimated that there will be no police officers who copy tickets.
Halfway up the only mountain path, I could see a pagoda made of blue bricks in the distance. I told Hu Zongren that I have lived in Jiangbei for decades, and I often pass by in this area, but I really didn't notice that there is such a tower here. Hu Zongren said that it was also when he called the farmer to confirm the address, and only then did he learn that there was a tower here, and the name was Wenfeng Tower.
There are countless Wenfeng pagodas in China, and the shapes are also somewhat different according to the different places and the different meanings given by humanistic feelings. There are quite a few Wenfeng Towers in Chongqing, and there are two of them that I am familiar with, one near Dongquan, which is said to have been built together when the Baisha Monastery was built, and the other in Huangjuiya, Nanshan, Chongqing, which is a household name because of a novel called "A Pair of Embroidered Shoes" and a movie called "The Fog is Boundless". And I've never heard of this Wenfeng Tower.
When we found the farmer's house at the address they had provided, I couldn't help but feel a little funny as soon as we turned into the yard, but I couldn't tell where the joke was. I saw a man of about 50 years of age, tall, and thin with dark skin, sitting in the middle of the yard, facing a small shed that looked like a chicken coop. There is a hoe for digging the ground on his knees, which is the same as the posture I saw in my early years in Journey to the West waiting for Sun Wukong at the entrance of the cave, the only difference is that Zhu Bajie has plump breasts, but this farmer does not.
Probably sensing that we were coming, the farmer turned his head to look at me and Hu Zongren. Hu Zongren waved his hand to him, signaling that we are the people you called to find. The farmer hurried up to us and wiped the bench he was sitting on with his sleeve, then pushed the bench in front of us and told us to sit down. It was too polite, and I was a little unaccustomed to it. He smiled and handed over a cigarette, and then said a little embarrassed, little brother, I smoke a cigarette very well, don't you care.
"Glimpse" in the meaning of Chongqing dialect means bad. I've never been averse to cheap cigarettes, because I used to pick up cigarette butts when I didn't have money. Seeing that this uncle was so polite, I respectfully took it and ordered it for myself to show that I didn't mind at all. When the uncle saw us sit down, he hurried back to his room, took a four-legged stool, put it in front of us, and sat down.
Hu Zongren first introduced ourselves, and then the uncle told us that his surname was Yang, Hu Zongren pointed to the shack that the uncle had been staring at before, and said, that is the chicken coop where you saw the figure that night, right? Uncle Yang said yes, I have told you all about the situation, from the time I called you to the time you came, nothing strange happened, I have been sitting in the yard and staring at the chicken coop! I asked Uncle Yang, why are you staring at the chicken coop in broad daylight? He said he was scared that thing would come and steal the chicken last night.
I smiled and told him, don't worry, if there is a ghost, I will never do this for two nights in a row to steal your chickens. I noticed a large blue bag on his forehead, presumably from a fall that had been knocked unconscious the night before when he was in a hurry to escape. So I asked Uncle Yang, you have been staring at us for a few hours, you are so patient. Uncle Yang smiled embarrassedly. Hu Zongren asked him, can you carefully recall the appearance of the figure you saw last night, whether it was a man or a woman, an adult or a child. Uncle Yang shook his head and said, this is really hard to say, because it was night, it was dark all around, and the lights outside his house were not lit. He thought for a moment and said, if it was the size of the body, it looked like an adult, at least not a child.
Hu Zongren stood up, walked to the chicken coop, and then asked Uncle Yang where the specific location was and where you were standing at that time. Although I don't really understand why Hu Zongren asked this, I guess he probably had to calculate the distance and make some guesses based on his own knowledge of Feng Shui. Uncle Yang stood in front of the chicken coop, put himself in a position and said, I was probably standing in this place at that time. Hu Zongren stepped into the chicken coop, and the chickens were enraged by his rude behavior and scattered in all directions to express their dissatisfaction with Hu Zongren's illegal invasion. Hu Zongren walked towards the center of the chicken nest and asked Uncle Yang, where is the figure you saw? Uncle Yang said, this is almost the place where you are standing now. Hu Zongren stood still, and I also looked carefully, which happened to be in the middle of this square chicken coop. So Hu Zongren squatted down and asked Uncle Yang, was the size of the figure you saw at that time about the same as now? Uncle Yang hurriedly said yes, yes, that's basically it, so he thought he was a chicken thief at first, so he grabbed the mud and smashed it.
Hu Zongren stood up, and while avoiding the chicken poop on the ground, he walked outside, causing the chickens to cluck again. After Hu Zongren stepped out of the chicken coop, he said to me, look at your group of fathers and villagers, they make my feet full of. I knew that he was sarcastic about my genus again, so I sarcastically said, you have eaten human when you were a child, are you still afraid of this?
Hu Zongren turned his head and asked Uncle Yang, "Before you encountered these things on the first night, were there anything else that made you feel particularly incredible?" Uncle Yang asked suspiciously, what do you mean? Hu Zongren said that he just heard something strange, or something strange happened. Uncle Yang thought about it and said, it seems that there is a piece, it was still summer at that time, and he saw a lot of black smoke coming out of the hole on the top of the peak tower in broad daylight, this phenomenon was discovered, and the surrounding people were rumored to say that Guanyin Bodhisattva had appeared, so people began to burn incense.
I laughed and said, Wenfeng Pagoda is a few years old man Confucius, what does it have to do with Guanyin Bodhisattva. Uncle Yang said that this tower has been here since he was a child, and it has not been sealed in the early years, so he also climbed, and later divided the Jiangbei District, and then listed this tower as a cultural relics protection unit, just to protect, but no one really came to protect, the tower is hollow, there is nothing, except for the small windows on the top of the few floors are not sealed, other places are sealed with cement, is worried that this tower is too old, danger or something. You said that there was not even a place to settle in this tower, so how could black smoke come out for no reason?
As soon as Uncle Yang said this, I began to feel a little interesting. A year ago, with Hu Zongren and Situ once because of the relationship between the unscrupulous plot, to the Bao'en Tower to look for things, at that time, although the tower was not sealed with cement, but it was also locked, so we had the opportunity to pick the lock into the tower to find something. So I immediately became interested in the Wenfeng Pagoda not far behind Uncle Yang's house, if it was really as he said, black smoke was coming out of the empty tower, and it was impossible for anyone to enter the tower, there might be a bit of a problem in this. In my opinion, the tower has the meaning of suppression, Uncle Yang's home is less than 100 meters away from the tower in a straight line, if according to feng shui, their family has been in a state of suppression, it is reasonable, but because there is a tower to live, so there should be no ghosts, unless the tower itself was not used for suppression, or was broken by something else.
I told Hu Zongren my idea, and Hu Zongren also felt that it made sense, so he suggested that we go to Wenfeng Pagoda to have a look. We asked Uncle Yang how to go up, he said that just walk along the path outside, Wenfeng Pagoda is on the top of the mountain, when the government said that it would be protected, it built a wall and made a park, but now there is no one in it at all, and it has long been deserted.
After saying that, Uncle Yang took us up the mountain, and walked for about ten minutes before entering a gate that seemed to be a park, but it was already in tatters, and I couldn't see the appearance of a park, and the ground was full of fallen leaves, which looked dirty and messy. Walking to the bottom of the tower, Uncle Yang pointed to a broken bluestone tablet on the ground and said, you see, this is what the government came to repair. I took a closer look, and it read "Tazishan Wenfeng Tower, Jiangbei District Cultural Relics Protection Unit", and the time of payment was 1992. I took a serious look at the tower again, the color of the base is not the same as the top, the base of the tower body is more like a large stone block, and from the second floor, it has become a bluestone mixed with stone slurry repaired, as Uncle Yang said, several entrances into the tower have been sealed.
Hu Zongren stood at the bottom of the tower, stretched out his hand and pointed to the other side of the river, and then pointed to the Yangtze River Bridge of the Big Buddha Temple, which can be seen from afar, and then pinched his chin and thought for a while, and then said to me, there seems to be a problem with the feng shui here, let's find someone to ask the origin of this tower. Let me ask who, I'm an old Jiangbei person who has come here for the first time, can anyone know better than me?
Hu Zongren smiled and said, let's ask Old Man Situ, he is omnipotent!
