When Smiley left the Islay Hotel that morning to go to Grosfano Square, the sun was shining and the sky was blue. But as he drove his rented Rover car past the unsightly buildings lining Edgewell Road, the wind stopped. Dense clouds of rain gathered in the sky again, and only the remnants of the red light on the asphalt road reminded one of the sunshine just now. He parked on St. John's Wood Road, in the forecourt of a new building with a glass entrance in front of it, but he didn't get in through the entrance. He walked past a large sculpture and couldn't see what it was, it seemed to be a mess of cosmic objects. He was in a cold drizzle,......
