The house has a small paddock for horseback riding on one side and a lawn tennis court on the other, hidden in the middle of the woods. The pitch was not too good and the grass was not mowed very often. In the spring, the stagnant water of the winter soaked the grass and there was no sunlight to dry it. In the summer, the ball flies out and falls among the foliage and is difficult to find. This morning, the frosty leaves that swept from the garden into the pitch were thick enough to be foot-deep. But outside the field, among the beeches that run along the rectangular barbed wire, there is a trail on which Smiley and Lacan now stroll. Smiley had put on his travel coat, but Lacan wore only his shabby ......
