Chapter 380: I'm an Actor
Los Angeles, 2003.
Alvarado Ray Agency Agency (3 brokers, 129 clients, downstream of the industry), in a bright and elegant office, a middle-aged male agent sits behind a desk and reads a resume of an actor.
A blonde girl across from me said, "I was the cheerleader of our high school, but I love acting, I've acted in a lot of school stage plays, I want to be a star like Nicole Kidman, Kate Winslet." I don't really like her, I think she's a bit pretending, she seems to have acted in "Titanic", is there anything else? But I liked Leonardo DiCaprio......"
She couldn't help but stop talking, because the agent was looking at her with an idiot look.
"I'm a Kate Winslet fan. The agent said, "She compared Judi Dench in "Hand in Hand." β
"Uh......" The girl was stunned.
DPN brokerage company (11 brokers, 552 clients, midstream of the industry) in one office.
"How do you feel about me?" the girl looked at the male agent with a teasing look in her eyes, teasingly playing with her lips, "Am I sexy enough?"
"I'm gay. The agent said, looking at the few near-nude photos on the table, "Sorry, our company doesn't need sexy customers for the time being, good luck." In addition, I would like to remind you that we are official actors' agents, and when we see this kind of photo, what we want to do most is to call the police. β
"Uh......" The girl was stunned.
LA Talent Management Inc. (5 brokers, 73 clients, cooperative agents for "Love Alabama", "Enemy of Love", etc., upstream of the industry).
"Now, I have a few questions for you. β
"Okay, excuse me?"
The male agent was a little surprised, and the girl asked confidently and boldly: "How many actors do you represent? What type of actors do you think I belong to? How many actors do you represent who belong to the same type as me? If I choose you as my agent, what can you bring me? What do you expect me to give you? I'm ready to do everything." β
"I miss you...... "Get out?" said the agent apologetically, "I'm afraid you don't fit the image of our company, good luck." β
"Well, but I can really ......," the girl stunned, "you know, everything. β
"Good luck. β
JKA Talent Agency (2 brokers, 58 clients, focusing on independent films and TV shows, midstream of the industry) in one office.
"I just did an independent film called My Perfect Family, in which I played the daughter, a major supporting actress. The girl smiled sweetly and talked eloquently: "It's really interesting to act in a movie, it's not difficult for me, it's fun." When I'm on set, it's like I'm at home......"
"My-Perfect-Family?" the female agent tapped on the keyboard, and the IMDb page was displayed on the computer screen, and she said as she looked at it, "I didn't find it." The most recent is the 1992 TV movie Perfect-Family, which plays the daughter of Shi Rui Applebi. Without you. β
"Uh...... You can't find any movie. β
"IMDb can find any project. β
"Probably not registered yet......"
"Probably yes. Stella, we're a small company and we're not quite ready to add customers, so can you go back and wait for news?"
OTA brokerage (14 brokers, 710 clients, big-name clients such as Dakota Fanning, Elle Fanning, etc., upstream of the industry) in an office.
"Oh no!! Romeo, you can't die, and if you die, I won't live...... Father!?Father, save him!!"
Under the watchful eye of the male agent, the blonde girl was performing a monologue of "Romeo and Juliet", crying exaggeratedly, she suddenly ran to the desk, "I'm not alive!!" She excitedly grabbed a small long vase on the table and stabbed it into her chest, "Ah-"
As soon as she screamed, she fell weakly to "Romeo (desk)", and the vase in her hand fell to the ground with a crisp bang!
"GOD!!" the agent lost his voice, his eyes straight as he looked at the fragments of the vase all over the floor.
The girl stood up, excited about her performance, and the priest (agent) was also brought into the play, and she was upset that Tai was in the play and broke the vase, "Thank you, I'm done." β
"You just smashed $1,000!" the agent was so angry that he was about to cry, "That's enough, get out now, never come back!"
As soon as she heard the $1,000, the girl had already hurriedly grabbed her resume and photograph on the table, and ran out of the office like a desperate person.

Los Angeles, afternoon 10 January 2006.
Stella accompanied Mody to the agency house company located in the east section of 6th Street in Santa Monica for an interview, the office building is a two-story cuboid, and the two came in under the instructions of the front desk lady to wait in the reception area outside an office on the second floor, the agreed time was 15:30, and there was still half an hour.
For them, the agent named Barry Jacobson is a big shot, and it is a courtesy to come and wait half an hour early.
But if you haven't been met until almost 16:30, then there is a problem.
Although there were only two people waiting in the reception area, Stella began to look at the clock on the wall on the other side of the reception desk, while Mody had been silently rehearsing the waiting speech.
Just after 16:30, the young receptionist got up and walked over, with a stiff smile on her face, and informed: "Sorry ladies, Mr. Jacob is too busy to see you, and the meeting has been cancelled. β
Mo Di was stunned for a moment, and quietly grabbed the corner of the resume in his hand.
"Ma'am......" Stella took a deep breath, suppressed her dissatisfaction, and smiled sweetly: "Madam, please tell Mr. Jacobson, we don't mind waiting any longer, wait until he gets off work today, when he is free, when will we meet Mody again." β
"Okay. The receptionist put aside a sentence and walked back to the reception desk, doing nothing, only glancing at the two of them from a distance, you can continue to wait if you want.
Stella smiled at her again, then withdrew her gaze and whispered to Mody: "Wait, if you encounter this situation in the future, you will have to rely on this and don't leave, no one will drive you away, maybe it will be done if you wait." Be polite to those receptionists and offend people in no good. β
"Good. Mody nodded instructively and continued to rehearse silently.
The wait was more than half an hour, until 17:12, when the receptionist picked up the phone on the stage again, put down the microphone, and said to this side: "You have 5 minutes." β
"Mody, go!" Stella hurriedly said, not getting up, if she went in with her like a nanny, the meeting would be over in less than 1 minute, "Come on!"
"Good ......" Mo Di hurriedly walked to the office with her resume and other materials, her face was already red with nervousness, and her steps were a little chaotic.
Stella who was watching helplessly propped her forehead, how can she be an actress?
"No Shaquille, no victory. Kwame Brown is completely no, no one can help Kobe, Smush Parker?
In the bright and spacious office, a middle-aged white man in a blue suit was chatting about something in a black leather chair behind a luxurious desk with a telephone microphone, and when he saw the girl open the door and come in, he made a gesture to her to sit down, "If I can't make the playoffs this year, I won't renew the season ticket, I'd rather give the money to the Knicks, haha......"
Mody walked lightly to the table and sat down on a chair, quietly waiting for the other party to finish talking on the phone, this was taught by Stella.
"Hahaha, going to play golf on the weekend? Yesterday I played with Kane, and that-raised actually hit an eagle, what else could it be if it wasn't luck?" he couldn't believe it...... "Jacobson laughed and talked for nearly ten minutes, talking about various sports topics, and suddenly said: "Don't talk about it, there is still some work to be done, there is a newcomer in the office, haha." β
He put down the microphone and coughed, coughing so that his middle-aged face was full of wrinkles, hooking his fingers, "Give me your resume?"
"Hello Mr. Jacobson, I'm Mody Conrad. Mody handed him the resume with both hands, trying to keep her voice steady and confident.
Jacobson took the resume and looked:

Paying attention to the other party's expression, Modi smiled slightly according to Stella's teaching, and said: "Mr. Jacobson, I am a newcomer who has just started his acting career, and my resume may not be so bright, but my acting talent, experience and hard work are enough to meet all new opportunities. I hadn't been in Los Angeles for long, but I knew it was a city full of opportunities, and my humble hope was happening today. β
Although he tried his best, his voice was still a little trembling.
Stella says it's okay to be shy and conservative, and the most important thing is to show your true self - the pitiful type. In this way, the agent can know what type she belongs to, whether there are enough people of this type among the signed clients, and whether there is a job opportunity that is exactly needed for this type.
The more professional you are, the more you are valued, and don't do anything self-righteous.
These are legitimate agents, and hooking up with them in the office will only be kicked out immediately, because if this kind of thing is not good, it will go to the union, whether it is a union member or not, and the union will no longer authorize the agent, and his career will be over.
Remember that the entertainment industry is the number one to make money, and agents are no exception, and their competition is just as cruel, and only professional actors will bring them income and status.
So the most important thing to do is to show your understanding of the performance and the entertainment industry, the more you understand, the more the agent will worry about you and be pleasing to the eyes, and you can put it on the track as soon as you sign it, which is more likable than a pure rookie. But remember not to speak ill of anyone, only good things, and preferably not to comment on others.
For the film and television industry, Mo Di knows Ye Wei best, and said: "I am also ready to participate in Ye Wei's draft, I like his movies, and I am confident that I can win a role." β
"Oh. Jacobson seemed to squeeze a syllable out between his teeth, and it didn't seem to be, he looked through the profile photo on his resume, which was just an ordinary digital photographic print, flipped through it a few times, and said: "You have a pair of beautiful eyes, and your temperament is not bad." β
"Thank you!" Modi's smile grew shy, her hands nervous and expectant.
"But I'm sorry. Jacobson handed his resume back to the other side, and his expression looked very serious: "Our company already has enough customers of your type, and we can't give you a good opportunity, and you will have better development if you find another brokerage company." Little lady, it's really a pity, good luck. β
Modi's face suddenly turned sharply, "Can I, can I show a one-man show?"
"No, little lady, it's not necessary. I'm still busy, so ......" Jacobson made a gesture to leave, and said again, "Good luck." β
"Oh thank you, thank you for arranging this meeting. Mo Di had no choice but to stand up, say a few words of thanks, take the resume and other materials and walk outside, turned around and sighed quietly.
I heard another phone call behind me: "Kane Manuel said he was going to play golf on the weekend, he didn't believe you beat the Eagles, haha......"
Mody walked out of the office and closed the door.
"How's it going?" Stella walked up to her, expectantly, after all, the interview had been going on for about 11 minutes. Modi shook her head: "Good luck." Stella understood what was going on and frowned, "How many words did you say?" Mody replied, "Speaking of which I'm going to participate in the draft." β
"Let's go. Dozens of failures will always succeed. Stella didn't comfort her and took the lead.
Mody followed, thanking and saying goodbye to the cold-faced receptionist with a smile on her face, and then walked out of the exit.
......
"Don't think today's defeat is anything, Mody, I'm telling you, it's nothing, it's not a warm-up. The agent has to continue to look for a job, and I have to find a job at the same time, almost all of my jobs are found by myself, a broker usually has 50 clients, all counting on the broker you will die. β
"I listen to you, so how should I find a job?"
"Wait until your profile photo is ready, and then hand out your resume to those casting directors. You really have to find a way to enrich your acting experience, and the ones you make up now are still quite fake, and insiders will know at a glance that they are unconvincing window dressing. β
"Then go to be a group performer for two days?"
"Why do you always worry about group performances? I said that you don't have acting experience when you do group performances for ten years, and this is the same as dumping garbage in the theater where you are holding the Oscars, it doesn't mean that you attended the Oscars! The draft will be held on the 21st, you should prepare for the draft first, this is a big opportunity, and it may only happen once in a lifetime. β
"Yes. β
"It's a ghost, don't you get your hopes up, the latest news Dakota Johnson is also participating, do you know who she is?"
"I don't know. β
"She's this year's Miss Golden Globes, the same age as you, but she's the child of a big star! β
"Oh, too......"
The night of the 10th enveloped Los Angeles, and in the dilapidated apartment living room, Stella and Mody were trotting around the living room together, running and chatting. Modi has lived here temporarily, and Safi has no problem with the three of them sharing a house, and Modi not only shared the rent of 270 yuan, but also took over a lot of housework.
Suddenly, a frantic scream came from Safi's bedroom: "Oh-My-God!!!!!"
"That's why I stipulate that you can't bring men back. Stella rolled her eyes and exclaimed, "Safi, your high-tide screams are too loud. Mody's face flushed.
"It's VIY!VIY!" Safi's screams continued.
"yes, he's you. Stella scoffed. Mody's face was even redder as if it was about to drip blood.
"No, it's VIY's blog!!" Safi screamed and ran out of the bedroom, neatly dressed, glancing at the two of them, so excited that he couldn't speak: "His blog! Haven't a lot of people recently been deceived by the liar who said it was his casting director, and he wants to meet all these girls!"
Moreover, he also wants to compensate them privately, as long as it can be proved to be true, he will compensate them in full as much as they have been deceived! He also said that he will mobilize the power of the Internet to dig out all those scammers, arrest them and put them in prison, and also say that there are any special gifts to give to those girls......
Modi's eyes widened in a daze, and her azure eyes were as bright as if the sun was shining into it.
"Really?" Stella also widened her eyes, looked at Modi, and asked in a trembling voice: "Is the casting director who lied to you in the name of Ye Wei......?"
Mody nodded stunned.
"Oh-My-God!!!!!" Stella screamed, "You're lucky, you're really lucky! You can see VIY, and the gifts, you're absolutely lucky!!"
She slammed into Safi's bedroom, and Safi ran as she did, and Mody walked briskly with difficulty, her face red and white in disbelief.
"Hahaha! It's true, oh my God! VIY's blog, Mody, come and see. "Awesome! Mody, you're so lucky......"
"Look, he said, 'Don't be disappointed in humanity, don't be disappointed in chasing dreams, you may think this is reality, no, that's just the beginning! Let's defeat reality and destroy it completely!
Look, 'Don't be shy about being deceived, you don't make any mistakes, stand up bravely, let the tricks of the liars be exposed to the light and render them useless, let them be arrested, let them die!' Girls, I sincerely invite you to contact me, I want to meet you kind and lovely silly girls...... 'Haha, Modi!'"
"Oh my god, VIY is so cool! How did I not get scammed? It's not fair......"
There was a burst of excited screams in the bedroom, all of them were talking to Stella and Safi, and Mody didn't speak.
After a long time, she walked out of the bedroom surrounded by the laughter of the two, still in a trance, and when she sat down on the old sofa, she suddenly said: "I want to make a new resume, in fact, Conrad is not my real surname, it is the surname used by liars...... I just wanted to remind myself. My name is Mody Semington. β
Seeing her choked with teary eyes, Stella and the others were a little quieter.
"I'm not going to make up any more information, I'm going to do whatever I want. I think VIY understands that those of us who only look at acting ability and nothing else. β
"What the hell are you capable of acting?" Stella wondered, not sure about this. Safi's expression was a little complicated, "Normal, right?" Mody choked up with shyness: "I don't know, I've never performed in front of other people, it's all wild." β
"That's bad. Stella couldn't help sighing, anxious and sorry for her, what a good opportunity, from bad luck to good luck, but it seems that there will be no gain......
Safi shook his head, as expected, Modi was so shy that she couldn't read her lines, how could she act well?
Mody asked shyly, "Why don't I perform for a while, and you can point me out?" Stella waved her hand and said, "Act." Safi asked, "What are you playing?" and Mody got up, thinking, "I often act alone in my life, and I play movie roles. Surely you've seen "Little Sunshine Beauty", I'll play Oliver?"
"Okay, you act. Stella sat down on the couch, and Safi sat down as she watched as Mody stood in the living room.
She closed her eyes, her lips silently chanted "1, 2, 3", and when she counted to 3, she instantly opened her blue eyes and began to act-
Almost immediately, Stella was stunned, and so was Safi.
This, this...... Is this really Mody......

The World and the Parish: Essays and Reviews of Vera Cather, 1893-1902, Volume I
Author: Vera Cather (1873-1947), famous writer, poet, journalist and editor
From "John-Drew-and-Maude-Adams" on pages 436, 437, 438:
Introduction:
"For sixteen years, John Drew (1853-1927) was one of Augustin Daly's "Big Four", performing romantic plays with Ada Ryhan, who played the opposite role. In 1892 he became a star in the Charles Fromman theatre run by his family, working with Mody Adams (1872-1953).
In 1896, they performed R together. Cγ Carton's "Squire of the Ladies" and "Rosemary", screenplays by Louis N. Parker and Murray Carson. When looking back on the latter's outstanding performance, Vera Cather wrote a little about Miss Adams in her previous journal of April 6, 1897: "Miss Adams, of course, she plays an innocent and simple maid with her own charming and unique charm. She is so talented and plays her role so vividly. γ
Body:
"Here he is, the idol of the female theater fans, the Hamlet of this theater!
I'm referring, of course, John Drew from "The Squire of the Ladies"! As you know, he shaved his beard -- there has been no such thing as a shaving and a haircut since the German Emperor shaved to make people so alarmed. Everyone said that even the cannibal beauties in the center of Africa were lamenting and weeping over those shaved beards. And he did it just to better star in "Rosemary". Well, maybe he had other reasons for shaving.
I certainly knew how crazy New York was about "Rosemary," and I could scarcely express my true thoughts until I asked all sorts of people what it was really like about this dramatic event, and they all agreed with me. It's not interesting at all, and anything I've ever seen is embarrassing. The only thing to be gained is the costumes, and even completely erroneous historical sources......
Mr. Drew plays a poor man, he plays it very well, and he is a man who uses all the best adjectives to praise him. When you say that he is indeed very good, you will praise him for all his virtues, that he is a Hamlet of the theatre, who expresses his emotions to the heroine in an elegant way - only in this performance, he does not show it.
I'd like to share my thoughts on that over-praised young lady, Mody Adams.
At first, Miss Adams was hopelessly old-fashioned in appearance, her voice was small and harsh, and her interpretation was rather mediocre. Oh, she's so hateful and cute, like a little Chinese cat, you really want to leave her alone and see if she will change.
This guy has the most ridiculous and obvious ghost ideas to hide her shyness. When she came out for a curtain call, she jumped out like a frightened fawn and scanned the audience as if she had never seen it before. When there is a performance that requires wearing sequins and tulle clothes, the posture of this "boarding school" on stage is simply ...... You'd love to ask Olgar-Nethersol how she was confident in that situation, how she could have won a good fight! οΌ1οΌ
Miss Adams, as we all know, is a rising star. I can't explain why she was discovered and given the opportunity to become a star. Perhaps the real motivation for her was that she really met someone who was willing to let her be an actress and take this adventure.
Of course, different people have different opinions about Miss Adams. She gets along well with her peers, William H. Kane thinks her performance is extremely elegant and beautiful, and one of our talented and sentimental actresses told me last week that whenever she saw Miss Adams in "Rosemary" she couldn't help but cry: "God bless her!"
I'll admit I wouldn't have such an emotional outburst as she did. But it was because of this little Chinese cat that Richard Harding-Davis was always sighing for his hopeless days. It is not impossible to say that the man who wrote "Gallagher and Other Stories" could marry almost any American girl. After Mr. Edward H. Sasson and Mr. Charles Dana Gibson, he was the man who became increasingly adored and loved by women. οΌ2οΌ
However, the arrogant Miss Adams refused to abandon her so-called "art", refused to cut off her long shawl curls, and refused to throw away her shy gaze in the face of the audience's enthusiasm. Oh, come on, Richard Harding! A delicate Gibson girl is pretty to look at, but in this case, it's a reflection of your taste.
If you want to say that the most icy and intelligent actress in "Rosemary", the most endearing and charming point of this bizarre and old-fashioned picture is Miss Ethel Barrymore (daughter of heartthrob Morris and niece of John Drew) who plays the role of the squire's housekeeper "Priscilla" (3), she is like a heavy stroke in a set of Henry Fielding's popular old-fashioned romantic dramas......
ββββββββ diary, May 2, 1897
Note:
(1): Olga-Nethersole (1867-1951), stage actor, theater producer, bold performance style, bold dress, played many types of "prostitute-woman", "depraved woman", "mistress" and other types of roles, once arrested for a performance "contrary to public decency", later acquitted. In 1896, he gave a passionate kiss on stage in the play "Carmen", so later generations called this kind of thing "Nethersole-Kiss".
Later, in 1900, she performed "Sappho" in New York. As it was the "Comstock era," Anthony Comstock, a Puritans, inspector, politician, and president of the New York Society for the Maintenance of Morals, worked to maintain Victorian morality. After the performance in New York, the New York police arrested the leading actors such as Nethersol, as well as the theater manager and others, on charges of "violating public decency".
The incident shocked the public and the media, and after a month of continuous uproar, the court tried for two days, and finally the jury deliberated for 15 minutes and ruled that Nethersol and others were acquitted. This incident became a major event in the transformation of sexual attitudes in American society.
(2): Richard-Harding-Davis, 1864-1916, writer, screenwriter, journalist. Controversial, a pioneer in exploring social issues such as abortion, suicide, the death penalty, and race relations, he was marginalized by mainstream American society at the time.
He believed that it was fashionable to shave his beard cleanly, predicting that in the 20th century, men would be more popular. But at the time, beard growth was the only trend. Vera Cather was saddened by John Drew's shaved beard, and satirized Davis because John Drew's shaving began to lead the way, and he would not die alone. Later Davis was married twice in his lifetime, in 1899 and 1912, with his first wife, Sylle Clark, an artist, and his second wife, Betsy McCoy, an actress, and a daughter.
(3): Ethel-Barrymore, 1879-1959, stage and film actor, Maurice Barrymore's eldest daughter, a member of the Barrymore family, and a member of the Barrymore family, known as the "First Lady of American Theatre".
John-Drew, Jr. ), 1853-1927, eldest son of John Drew (stage actor and theater manager), stage actor, specialized in Shakespeare's comedies. His sister Georgiana Drew and Maurice Barrymore married, and in turn formed the "Barrymore Family", with great-granddaughter Drew Barrymore.
Charles-Dana-Gibson, 1867-1944, illustrator, in the 90s of the 19th century, Gibson created his ideal American girl image "Gibson-Girl", which has since become famous and greatly influenced American fashion, and now the "Gibson Girl" has become a symbol of American girls in the early 20th century. Finish. Mody's face flushed.
"It's VIY!VIY!" Safi's screams continued.
"yes, he's you. Stella scoffed. Mody's face was even redder as if it was about to drip blood.
