Chapter 844: First head-to-head confrontation
There was a brief silence as the people in the classroom turned their heads to look at the three lesson objectives still written on the blackboard and frowned at them.
"Using the Defensive Charm?" Professor Umbridge said with a slight smile. "Why, you need to use defensive charms in my class, Mr. Van Lyn El. You don't want to be attacked in class. β
"We're not going to use magic?" Ron shouted.
Professor Umbridge, still smiling, turned his back to him. Harry and Hermione immediately raised their hands. Professor Umbridge's eyes paused for a moment on Harry before she asked. β
"Well, Miss Granger, do you want to ask any other question, different from Mr. Van Lin's?"
"Yes," Hermione affirmed. "Are you sure that the whole point of defending against the dark arts is to practice defensive spells?"
"Are you an education specialist in the Wizarding Department, Miss Granger?" Professor Umbridge said in a hypocritically sweet voice.
"No, but ......" Before Hermione could finish her sentence, Umbridge interrupted directly.
"Okay, I'm afraid you're not qualified to determine what the subject of Defence Against the Dark Arts is all about. Wizards who are smarter than you and much older have already given us a picture of what to learn. You will learn defensive spells in a safe, risky way......"
"But what's the use?" said Harry, exclaiming. "We're going to be attacked, and it's going to ...... no good"
"Hands, Mr. Potter!" Professor Umbridge said in a louder voice.
"Harry......" Van Lin had a headache, he gave Harry a look, but Harry didn't look at him at all, they were too far apart.
Harry thrust his hand into the air with force.
Again, Professor Umbridge quickly turned away, but now more people raised their hands.
"What's your name?" Professor Umbridge said to Dean. Dean ...... Dean Thomas ......"
"Well, Mr. Thomas?"
"So, that's what Harry said, right?" Dean said. "If we were attacked, it wouldn't be without danger. β
"I told you," Professor Umbridge said slowly, smiling at Dean with a deliberately irritating smile, "do you want to be attacked in class?"
"No, but ......"
Professor Umbridge interrupted, "I don't want to criticize something that's happening at this school. She said, an unconvincing smile on her wide mouth, "But you've debunked some of the most unreliable wizards in this class, very unreliable...... No need to mention it," she sinisterly smiled, "especially the half-breeds. β
"If you're talking about Professor Lupin," Dean became angry, "he's the best we've ever hadβ"
"Shut up, Mr. Thomas, as I said, when you learn some complex spells, and the ones that are not suitable for the age can have deadly effects. When you encounter a black spell at other times, you'll be terrified to believe that I'm right. β
"No," Hermione said, "we're just ......"
"Your hand isn't up, Miss Granger!" Hermione held her hand as Professor Umbridge turned away from her. "As I understand it, my predecessor didn't just use a broken spell in front of you, he actually cast a spell on you. β
"Okay, he's become a madman, isn't he?" Dean retorted fiercely, "Mind you, our load is still heavy. β
"Your hand is not raised, Mr. Thomas!" Professor Umbridge's voice trembled.
"Now, learning the theoretical knowledge of the Ministry of Magic will be enough to enable you to pass your exams, and after all, everything about the school. What's your name?" she added, glaring at Parvati, the student whose hand had just been raised.
"Parvati Patil. But doesn't the Wizard Dark Arts Defense Test involve a little bit of combat experience, shouldn't we assume to show the defensive spells and things we actually do?"
"As long as you learn enough theory and for a long enough time, there's no reason why you can't complete a spell with careful, carefully controlled conditions. Umbridge said dismissively.
"Without prior practice?" Parvati said skeptically. "Are you telling me that the first time we cast magic was during an exam?"
"I repeat, as long as you learn enough theory long enoughβ"
"So good theory is about to go into the real world?" Harry said loudly, his hand in the air again. Professor Umbridge looked up.
"This is the school, Mr. Potter, not the real world. She said softly.
"So we don't need to prepare for the battle that awaits us?"
"There is no fight waiting for us, Mr. Potter. β
"Oh, is it?" said Harry, his mood beneath the surface had reached a boiling point.
"Are you going to attack that child? or...... Y-yourselves?" Professor Umbridge asked in a sweet and terrible voice.
"Well, let me think about it. Harry replied in a voice feigned deep thought, "Perhaps, Voldemort?"
Ron gasped for air, Lavender Brown let out a small scream, and Neville nearly slipped off his chair. And Seamus was disdainful, as for the rest, the shock was a little more, Van Lin and Hermione frowned, this is simply Harry's standard, just say anything, upright Gryffindor.
But Professor Umbridge didn't flinch. She looked at Harry coldly, a look of satisfaction on her face.
"Gryffindor deducted 50 points. "The classroom became quiet. Everyone was looking at Professor Umbridge or Harry.
"Now, let me make it a little simpler. Professor Umbridge stood up and leaned towards him, her short, thick fingers spread across the table. "You told me a dark wizard was resurrected......"
"He's not dead," Harry said angrily. "And, he's back!" Potter ...... Sir, I have to warn you, you ...... Already...... ...... for you Academy...... Lost ...... 50 points, so ...... Don't ...... anymore Make things more ...... Oops," Professor Umbridge yelled at him word for word but didn't look at him.
"You sent us a notice that a dark wizard has become stronger. It's a lie. β
"It's not a lie!" said Harry. "I saw him. I've fought him!"
"Confinement, Mr. Potter. Professor Umbridge said triumphantly. "Tomorrow night. 5 o'clock. My office. I told it, it's a lie. The Ministry of Magic guarantees that you will not be in danger because of any dark wizard. If you're still worried, an hour after class can explain it to you. If someone lies to you that the Dark Wizard has been reborn, I'd love to hear it. I can help you. I'm your friend. Now, continue your reading, on page 5, 'Fundamentals for Beginners'"
Professor Umbridge sat behind her desk. Harry, however, stood up. Everyone looked at him, and Seamus was half scared, half fascinated.
