Chapter 508: Carrie the Witch
[Brian De Palma's Carrie the Witch is an absolutely ecstatic horror movie with a shocking ending where a shark from Jaws jumps onto a boat and swims along the best lines. It's also (and what makes it so great) a deep and sensitive portrait of beings. This girl named Carrie is not another scary assembly line routine, she is a shy, smart, complex high school student, like one of the huge numbers of kids we all once knew.
It's a little different, though. She has the superpower of mind actuation, and she can manipulate things with her mind without touching it. It's her ability to gradually awaken, unleashed in response to her mother's strident religious fanaticism, a small way to reveal herself. She was looking in a mirror, it was cracked, she was repairing herself. Her mother tried to hold her on, but she threw her back against the couch. But then, on prom night......
Before that change, the students progressed so ruthlessly and unstoppably, which is why the last 20 minutes of the film are so captivating. This isn't a sci-fi fantasy movie nailed in crisis, but it examines a character we all know and understand, and when she makes the most of (or uses) her bizarre powers, we all understand why.
This type of narrative development does not precisely show Parma's strengths, but here he presents a talent for pictorial personality and personal attacks, and we really can't guess how de Palma could have gone so deep with such a flashy surface.
Part of his success is due to the very good performances given by Sissi Spicek, who plays Carrie, and Piper Laurie, who plays Carrie's mother. They form a closed, claustrophobic family, and the mother translates her spiritual fear of sex into a twisted personal religion. She punished the girl severely, locked her in a closet with a statue of Jesus who was bleeding horribly, and forbade her to develop normal friendships.
So it's no surprise that Carrie is so quiet at school, she has long blond hair, but she just lets it hang straight and basically covers her face with it. She sat at the back of the classroom, didn't talk much, and was a laughing stock that her classmates used to make jokes. Meanwhile, the most popular girl in the class is plotting a truly cruel prank to play Carrie, relying on another popular girl's equally popular boyfriend to invite Carrie to the prom - he's the same teammate in every sport you're playing in different. But he's not playing a prank, he's completely serious about inviting Carrie.
Then de Palma gives us an unexpected but incredible prom scene - Carrie's performance there, really, so beautiful. Although there was a little bit of something wrong with that, De Palma had an effective way of passing like Carrie and her dance partner dancing, the camera spinning to film them, and the romance began, but went too fast, like what would be if they got out of hand......
I don't want to spoil or even hint at what's going to happen next, I can't spoil a little bit of this movie's climax, all I can say is that Carrie the Witch is a real horror story. It's not the kind of shoddy work assembled from some old Vincent Price classic parts, it's a real one, digging out the horrors of the characters themselves. The most terrifying horror story - M. R。 The works of James, Edgar Allan Poe, Oliver O'Neill - all like this, they develop the fears of the beings they observe. This also happens in this movie, making it forever. 】

"Weige, have you seen the DVD of Carrie?"
"I've seen it. ”
"What do you think?"
"I don't know. ”
Hearing Ye Wei's flat words coming from the phone, Jon Philheimer was shocked, and when he came back from VIY Travel, he was even more depressed, and asked, "Then what is your evaluation?"
"Maybe, maybe not, I don't know. ”
"It looks like we're going to have to make some changes to the communications plan...... Weige, how could it be?"
"The cowardice of the office and the mediocrity of the creator are punished by the film. ”
......
Like almost all mainstream, mini-mainstream studios, Lionsgate's film campaign is planned and executed by internal and external agencies. Externally, there are about 25 publicity agencies in the United States that serve domestic film distribution, covering traditional media, new media, different regions and different types of communication platforms, and the cost varies depending on the work task.
Not all film promotion can be blockbuster-style all-round coverage of the world, how to choose the publicity position, more and more consideration is given to the strategic thinking of the distributor, as well as the research of regions, ethnicities, people, etc., so it is routine to spend millions or millions of dollars on research companies before the publicity starts.
The audience for "Carrie" is clear: young people who want to watch thrillers looking for excitement, fans of Carrie.
Lionsgate continues to invest heavily in new media, trailers are everywhere on the Internet, and critics' screenings are of course available.
While critics don't usually break the studio's ban on the release of film reviews, the news media don't necessarily comply, especially the most influential media outlets, who often run away from film reviews for their own interests, but not necessarily good things, for blockbuster films from mainstream manufacturers and small films from independent manufacturers.
Nowadays, publishers can simply post movie reviews on Thursday, and maybe one day they will push it forward to Wednesday, but not now.
This week's three large-scale new films Before Thursday, October 5, "Infernal Affairs" had already stolen 9 mainstream film reviews to lead the momentum, not only because of its strong influence on the filmmaker Warner Bros., but also because only 1 of the 9 film reviews gave a bad review, 88% freshness, WB will do this.
The "Texas Chainsaw Massacre Prequel", which also belongs to Time Warner's New Line, stole two articles, "The Hollywood Reporter" and "Entertainment Weekly", both of which scolded it for being clichéd and annoying, and its film review release was released on the day before the release today, "Carrie" naturally had to keep up, and it was better to be praised and scolded than to be one step late.

"Here is the list of nominees for Best Actress: Mary Christine Barot, "Cousins", Talia Charles, "Rocky", Sissi Spicek, "Carrie the Witch", Liv Uman, "Face to Face", Fay Donaway, "TV Storm". The Oscar winner was ......"
The sky in Toronto was bright, and Nina woke up in a sweet dream, a little unhappy, why did she wake up, every time like this, just a little bit!
She sat in bed and remembered that it was a dream about Oscar.
"Carrie" is not an ordinary teen horror story, and the actor can get the reward if he performs well, and the old version has two Oscar nominations, Piper Laurie for Best Supporting Actress and Sissi Spicek for Best Actress.
That was Spicek's first Oscar nomination, and he has so far won six times, all for actress, the second of which was an Oscar for "The Miner's Daughter" in 1981. She's such an acting genius, one of the best actresses of her time.
The legend began in "Carrie", so Carrie is a very sought-after role, not to mention those ordinary actors, many girl stars want to play, like Lindsay Lohan. If it weren't for the low budget, "Exorcism Video" and Ye Wei, Nina knew that she couldn't play Carrie.
Now if you look at the old version of Carrie, Carrie is actually the most fashionable and beautiful one, such as the draped blonde straight hair, which was popular in the 70s with electric curls, like everyone has an exploding head, and now it will be made fun of.
Nina was born with straight black hair, and in "Carrie" she was styled with long black and brown straight hair, which she thought was beautiful.
But the performance is not beautiful, and she really tried her best, and when she was preparing and filming, she did her best and strength. There has always been a lot of pressure in this performance, and the performance is very tired, so that on the day of the finale, she felt a sense of relief.
Speaking of Carrie, many people may say weird, but she wants to use kindness, like her mother said, "a growing baby elephant". Carrie doesn't want to hurt anyone, but it seems that anyone wants to hurt her, is Carrie's revenge evil? Is there a right or wrong to kill out of control? Nina thought about it and couldn't figure it out, but this kind of incomprehension is not what the story is about. Ye Wei said "This is a tragedy", she agrees, this is a tragedy, so Carrie's revenge is not happy, but a greater pain, destroying others and herself. It was a tragedy that she killed with a kind heart.
Nina tried her best to play Carrie's kindness, a little cheerful, but with a depressed dark cloud overhead. Kimberly agreed and encouraged her to do so, and when she finished the job, she praised her for doing the job well, and hopefully so! Think of Hilary Swank, think of Sissi Spicek......
Like the dream just now, she was shortlisted for next year's Oscar for Best Actress with Carrie.
She has checked it before, and in that case she can become the second youngest nominee in history! Based on the date the nominations are announced, the youngest is Keisha Custer Huyce of "Whale Rider" a few years ago, 13 years and more than 300 days, I don't remember, it was Huyce's first time acting in a movie, which is really amazing.
Spicek was 27 years old when she played Carrie, and she herself was 17, and she was the youngest Carrie in history, a teenager who was faithful to the original.
In the dream, the lively Kodak Theater was about to award the Best Actress, and the hazy dark-haired male guest on the stage finished reading out the list of nominations, and when he looked at the envelope, he suddenly smiled: "The Oscar winner is-!" The TV screen was divided into five grids, one of which showed her sitting there, wearing a gorgeous evening dress, and then woke up.
It would be nice if I could get a nomination. The second youngest Oscar nominee for Best Actress...... It was so different, what a great life.
You can find out today if it will be, and today you can see the evaluation of the film critics!
......
"Sorry, I'm sorry, it's not the same as I envisioned. Kimberly sighed.
"There's nothing obvious wrong with it, it's just wrong because there's an old version of Carrie. Actually, you can shoot bolder and crazier, which is too light, too little. But it's hard to blame you, the script didn't get it right, the office was restricting you, you were holding the wrong blueprint to build the building, you can't be blamed. ”
"Nina, that girl, worked very hard, she deserved a better stage. ”
"Things are not decided yet, don't be so pessimistic, maybe...... Maybe it's because we're asking too much of ourselves, but it's still good. ”
......
Nina is not the kind of person who doesn't dare to watch the results of a new film when it is released, and waits for the dust to settle in the first week before watching it, she doesn't want to wait for a minute longer, the box office is the result, and the evaluation is also the result, so you have to pay attention to it as soon as possible! In this era, you don't need to buy newspapers and magazines from all over the world to see the movie review, just go online.
In a nervous and anticipatory mood, after spending a morning at school, she didn't arrive at the cafeteria at noon, Nina hurried to the Internet area of the library alone with her laptop, found a quiet place to sit down and turned on the computer, CPP ran on the desktop by the lake in the cliff park, she couldn't help but smile, and planned to rename CPP Sissi.
Sissi, we'll be lucky, we all will.
Nina prayed silently as she opened her browser to check, glancing left and right before opening something, and there were students reading books and doing homework far away. She clicked a few times, and her slightly round apricot eyes looked at a movie review on the screen, and after reading a few lines, her eyebrows condensed, and her lips murmured: "It's not ......"
2/5 minutes, the "Los Angeles Times" Betsy Sharkey wrote a film review, and those words gradually distorted and floated:
"Carrie should have more material in the hands of feminists, and instead Pierce did a remake rather than a redefinition. ”、
"It's not that Carrie is a bad movie, it's not, Pierce used all the new-age technology and special effects to tell the story and show Carrie's superpowers, and the writers added a cyber violence to a more widespread bullying campaign with cell phones and the burgeoning social network. It's all a bright spot, but it's still ......
Stephen King has created a fantasy so gripping and convincing about the difficulties of adolescent girls, especially when they don't yet understand, and the dramatic changes in their bodies that make their already self-inflicted feelings of being freaks and powerless to compete. I used to expect Pierce (whose performance in 1999's transgender teen scar "Boys Don't Cry" was so sharp and incisive that Hillary Swank won an Oscar) would find more to talk about gender politics that have been different since the '70s. However, the film does not break through de Palma's extraordinary imprint on how to interpret Carrie's unique perspective. ”
"Ye Wei (you know, a cinematic genius you know, who just became the youngest Oscar nominee for Best Director this year, and who had a shocking performance in "The Exorcism Video" about the lost and failed redemption of young girls) didn't show a role, I don't know exactly what he was involved in, but he obviously couldn't get Pierce on the right track, it didn't even have the terrifying power of confinement. They all shivered as if in the shadow of de Palma. ”
"All the actors and their performances are basically in line with Kim's imagination. Although Nina Dubov's portrayal of Carrie is not a better treatment than the old version, she also shows the embarrassment that can be seen everywhere in this film. The nimble young actress loses her amazement and pleasure in "The Exorcism Video", and from beginning to end, the audience does not reach Carrie's heart, and everything is unconvincing. ”
"Aside from a ridiculously sanitized ending, the new Carrie isn't much different from the old Carrie, and it's a shame to lose everything they can. ”
New-“Carrie“-is-not-that-different-from-old“Carrie“。 And-lost-everything-they-can-lose,thats-a-crying-shame。
thats-a-crying-shame

shame
"I didn't cry, you cried, Betsy Sharkey, you're prejudiced......! And you said it, the new version of the special effects is so much better, Carrie's ugly video was posted on the Internet by bad students, isn't that cool, what does it mean to lose everything? It's a preconceived prejudice! I'm embarrassed? I don't care what you say. ”
Nina said angrily in her heart, leaning back against the chair and motionless for a while, until her right foot unconsciously shook a few times, and her head shook violently, and she continued to check.
Some people say good, and some people will always say bad, it's just a movie review...... It's just two.
"USA Today's Claudia Pugh" gave a 2/4 rating: "No new blood is offered, the new version of Carrie is just a pure make-up refurbishment. It doesn't create much for this retelling of an American horror story based on Stephen King's best-selling 1974 novel. If director Kimberly Pearce has brought a captivating feel like 1999's "Boys Don't Cry," this remake might be worth watching. But Pierce's version lacks the modernity of de Palma's version of the original, and the result feels like a pale parody. ”
"Maybe it's because we've seen the old version 30 years ago, so it's all the more reason for the new version to adopt a different strategy, and it's not enough to make it better with modern technology and special effects. Pierce should have used more comedy or more melancholy, like exploring social isolation and assessing bullying at school, locking her daughter in a closet to punish her mother, and the devastating effects on a teenager. In short, not this failed imitation. ”
It's really puzzling what role Ye Wei plays as a member of the producer, and this genius should understand that this will not work, and his "Exorcism Video" can become a classic film not because it reinvents "The Exorcist", but because it tells a new horror story with a different mix of shooting strategies, social perspectives and character exploration. The new version of "Carrie" is just a remake of a crappy version. ”
"Dubov is a talented up-and-coming actress, but nowhere near the heights of Sissi Spicek. Because we all know the development and end of the film (and it does not give surprises), her overly gentle acting style and the positive energy she releases make the film present an unbearable drag and blandness, and become a catastrophe that people hope to end as soon as possible. ”
Catastrophe?
Who cares... I can't even spell the word......
It's just two film critics, they are both female film critics, the kind of old woman who is obsessed with the old version, and the straight hair is also considered a renovation? You won't appreciate it, many people will.
The air in the library seemed to be solidifying, Nina took a deep breath, and suddenly raised her fist to pound the computer screen, it's not like this, it's not! It's a good movie, my mother and many people cried when I watched it, Ye Wei also said it was cool, unless... That's just words of comfort?
"Hi Carrie. "Carrie Dubov. A few students walked by and said hello.
Nina quickly clicked to close the webpage, did not respond silently, and waited until there was no one around again, and then slowly checked again. A fear has crept up from the bottom of my heart, crushing those sweet dreams, smearing the coldness of sobriety......

The reviews are so bad, and the box office is not much better.
The hand suddenly stopped, and some did not dare to open the Rotten Tomatoes website that could be seen at a glance, and looked at the blank web page fixedly.
In the dead silence, I don't know why, she vaguely heard a voice from the old version of "Carrie":

"Few films are as exciting as the new Carrie and the results are disappointing, the pale and dry, uncreative story and characters are the only thing to see, the CGI special effects don't bring more energy, the teenage actors don't bring better interpretations, the director Pierce doesn't give even the slightest thought, and even if there is no contrast between the old and the new, it's a failure. ”――1。 5/4, Anne Hornaday, The Washington Post
"We feel sorry for Nina Dobrev, and with the stupid, pathetic, and pathetic Carrie like Sissi Spicek, it's hard to understand her portrayal of Carrie. Spicek is even weirder and more embarrassed, and a wounded look tells us that she is an ugly duckling who has been rightfully attacked by teenage swans. And Dubov didn't hang an invisible "kick me" sign on her back, she was inappropriately popular and endearing, and she read poetry in the classroom and the poetry book fell on the floor with too little clumsiness. It's like you going to prom with someone you like instead of someone you love. ”――0。 5/4, Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star
"The listless production, the painful result, including pig blood and all. —1/4, Lou Ramnick, New York Post
"In the old version of the movie, when Sissi Spicek's Carrie is drenched in pig's blood and begins to kill indiscriminately, it is like the pent-up emotions have finally been released, while the new version of Carrie is suddenly angry and out of control, and her behavior has been premeditated by the script. The comparison between the old and the new versions is unfair and inevitable, but even in its own right, people who read Carrie's story for the first time will be disappointed by its emptiness. —C, Michael Rezizhafen, The Hollywood Reporter

[What happened to the new version of Carrie, we don't know why, it all doesn't seem to make sense, it has Kimberly Pearce (her "Boys Don't Cry" is one of the best films of 1999, a classic forever), it has Nina Dobrev (she plays an impressive poor teenage girl tormented by demons in "The Exorcism Video") as Carrie, Julianne Moore as Carrie's mother, and its team has many names to look forward to.
They gave us this, thinking we would be able to enjoy a captivating and thought-provoking film, only to be drenched in pig blood. All interest is lost in the first 20 minutes by its stupidity, predictability, superficiality (I'd rather it talk about sociopathology). You may ask me, what is the difference between the old and new versions?
As you know, Carrie is a high school student with psychic superpowers, who is abused at home every day by her mentally ill mother and bullied at school, she is targeted by the most popular girl to be bad, another popular girl asks her popular boyfriend to invite Carrie to a prom, where Carrie is brutally and mercilessly, and then she ...... What should happen happens.
Basically, another heroine with the same name and surname named Carrie has exactly the same abilities, and then she happens her story in the same story, which produces exactly the same result. The writers who wrote the script also received a salary. It's too generous to them. If you ask me.
It's not heartbreaking, it's not shocking, it has horror props, horror soundtracks, horror scenes, horror special effects, horror gore paintings, but it's just not scary. It doesn't have scary characters, it's just like a group of people acting "we're the ones in Carrie" and never really understanding or showing the fear inherent in their characters.
Well, to be fair, Moore has a good performance, and Dubov, who is younger than Sissi Spicek, has her ideas (all the student actors in the new version are more youthful and dynamic, probably to target the audience watching the Teen Choice Awards), but she's like a nail in a sponge that doesn't feel empowering.
Although, it's not all a parody, the almost consistent story development is still unnerving. This faithful adherence to the original did not produce the same emotions, and Pierce was guilty of a myriad of faults, she was severely unaccustomed to the soil and did not bring out her sharpness and cleverness in "Boys Don't Cry". In any case, I don't see that she really wants to express anything, it lacks real feelings and only mediocrity, old and pompous casual processing.
Like the all-important prom scene, when Dubov is killing like a crappy dancer with her weird ritual-like movements, Pierce should know that just uses too much arrangement and makes the film even more unsuccessful, we've seen that trick in countless places, really, there were moments when I thought I saw the Force Locks in Star Wars (even though Star Wars was a year later than the old Carrie), and the kind of comical pervades this movie. The old version of the treatment was undoubtedly more natural and terrifying, and that was mind-actuating.
The old version of "Carrie" worked because it grafted a well-known teen drama with a horrific ending, and of course, De Palma and his stars created emotional persuasion. The new version of Carrie failed because it was 30 years late and terrible.
By the way, I also have to ask, what did Ye Wei, the smartest filmmaker on the planet, do? Is he really the Yunik Kuller who made "The Exorcism Video"? If so, how could he have allowed these people to create such a meaningless, pretentious piece of waste and participate in it. The smartest thing about him this time was not directing, avoiding the extraordinaryness of using his weak ability to confront de Palma.
The motto of the heroine in "Boys Don't Cry" is "I am a man trapped in a woman's body", and this phrase applies to the new version of "Carrie" "I am a refurbished movie trapped in the original "Carrie", disappointed, uninteresting, and pathetic. 】
