Section E, Chapter 30: The Ladder (Odyss)

Despite the protrusions of the city wall as cover, several soldiers beside him were shot by arrows and fell to the ground wailing in pain. Glancing at the wounded and dead who were immediately carried away by the logistics soldiers, Odys gritted his teeth and secretly prayed for them: I hope the military doctor can save these young men, and they don't have to die for it.

Narrowly missing an arrow through his shoulder, the Legion Commander crouched behind the sandbag and tightened his bowstring, firing the arrow in a sixty-degree arc. Expecting it to succeed in reducing the enemy's numbers, Odys poked his head out at the risk of being shot into a hedgehog by a rain of arrows and nervously observed the roaring battlefield: several enemy infantry with large shields had rushed under the walls, and now the echelons had erected straight ladders and prepared to put them on the wall. They were constantly being shot with bows and arrows, but immediately another infantryman, hiding under the cover of the shield, rushed forward and re-filled the position to transport the wooden ladder that required several people to move.

Determined, Odys cleared away all distractions and the screams he kept hearing in his ears, and he carefully surveyed the entire snow-covered battlefield, trying to find the enemy's constant commander. However, despite not finding the commander-like enemy, the Legion Commander was keenly able to spot a suspiciously trumpet-wielding enemy soldier at the rear of the army: he was definitely the one responsible for blowing the battle horn to tell the friendly forces to switch to the offensive phase. Even at this point, killing him is no longer worth much, but it is bound to cause some trouble to the enemy.

Seeing that the enemy had just finished a salvo, Odys struck his feet, pulled his bowstring with all his might, and aimed at the hornman and fired an arrow. However, it backfired, and the arrow missed in frustration, passing by the enemy.

"Soldiers, draw your sword!" In just a few dozen seconds, nearly thirty straight ladders had been secured. The enemy's infantry rushed up the straight ladder in a frenzy. Quickly judging that the timber of the ladder could not be burned quickly, Odysse shouted angrily: "All archers, keep suppressed! The rest of the infantry, hold every ladder with all your might!"

As soon as he was halfway through the sentence, the soldiers who had been on standby for a long time surrounded each ladder with shields and swords. Almost instantly, the shield-wielding Ice Rock Man climbed the wall one after another from all over the city at the same time, drawing his blade in an attempt to break through the siege. In order to avoid accidental damage, the enemy's arrows stopped coming after a trumpet, and the arrows of the Children of Ice began to be unilaterally suppressed again. Keeping an eye on the battle around him, Odys did his best to shoot at the enemy. Unable to care about the accuracy of his arrows, he only wanted to be able to put even the slightest extra pressure on his enemies. However, the enemy army was unmoved by this increasing sacrifice, and still maintained the same high morale and execution as the defenders.

As the battle progressed, the weather got worse and worse. Under the heavy snowfall, the already scarce sunlight became dimmer. The snow fog had grown thicker and thicker since the beginning, and it was now difficult to see the state of the enemy's rear. The cold wind continued to pour into the armor, making it even colder. However, the fury of the battle burned in his chest, and Odys only felt his blood surge, and the frequency of his arrows became faster and faster. Pursuing superb archery skills, he can kill a child of frost almost every two shots.

However, bow and arrow suppression soon lost its meaning, and the enemy troops who stopped the charge raised their shields above their heads to defend against the rain of arrows. After shooting the last arrow of the quiver on his back, Odys's heart beat wildly: the metal clash of swords and shields became more and more violent, but on the battlefield in front of him, there were enemy troops climbing up the straight ladder one after another.

Although every enemy who comes up will be besieged to death in the first place, taking advantage of the numerical advantage and the exhaustion of our soldiers, the walls may still be lost...... Gritting his teeth, Odysse rarely considered the "if": if we were prepared, we could have prepared some boiling oil or falling rocks to tilt downward. This will inevitably inflict heavy damage on the enemy's forces.

But there are not so many ifs on the battlefield, only the bad seed has always considered it...... With a snort at the honor that the Ice Rock Man still preserved, he couldn't help but think of what he had thought of when he was just an obscure little sentinel when he was young: being a sentry is a dangerous profession, because once the enemy declares war, he will come and shoot a sentry to death. There's no guarantee that the hapless "sacrifice" won't be you.

Shooting an enemy who was climbing a straight ladder, and looking at his body as he fell into the snow, Odes reached behind him again, but did not touch the arrows again: the fifty arrows had been fired. Annoyed, he tore off the quiver and smashed it to the ground, and the commander looked at the fierce battle on the entire city wall: there were more and more corpses piled up at the various staircase openings, most of them were the corpses of the enemy. However, the enemy reinforcements were extremely rapid, and one by one they rushed down the straight ladder. In just a few minutes, the defenders were unable to surround the enemy's lone vanguard and then work together to deal with the next enemy. Today, in front of each straight ladder, two or three soldiers can engage the defenders.

Maintain, although only a single wall can be defended...... Looking at the wounded of our army who were constantly being carried away, Odeus's eyes fell on the bright red scarf. Looking at the slender figure of its owner, the legion commander was momentarily stunned: In such a dangerous battlefield, how can there be a woman here that I have never seen? Looking at her dress, maybe she is a merchant who has not had time to evacuate.

Forget it, I don't have time to care about her!, shoved the longbow into the squire's hand, and Odys roughly pulled the shield from his hand and took it in his own hand. Just as he turned to leave, the squire hurriedly stopped him: "O, O'Eur, Lord Odys, you want to fight yourself?!

"Shut up, are you a coward when you are a coward?!" was already angry, and the commander pushed him away. The newly recruited squire was slammed against the wall with a loud "pop". Suppressing the burning anger, Odysse took off his slightly tight helmet and fell to the ground angrily: "The next time you dare to say such a thing, you will go back to feed the horses to Lao Tzu, and don't want to go to the battlefield again!"

"Clearly, understood, my lord!" Frightened, the attendant hurriedly grabbed his helmet and staggered to his feet: "I'll accompany you to the battle, my lordship...... Put your helmet on, right?"

"Not necessarily. Frowning, Odys tried to calm his mind with the cold wind blowing on his face. However, the increasingly fierce sound of metal fighting hit the heart, and the Legion Commander stared at the strange squire who had never been on the battlefield, thinking impatiently: once the melee combat began, this guy would not be of any help at all.

Suddenly thinking of the woman who had been carrying the wounded, Odys immediately decided to do his duty to protect her: "I just saw a girl helping to locate the wounded, and it is too dangerous for civilians to go in and out of this place repeatedly, let alone a woman. Go and take her place, and don't let her climb the walls again—that's what the Supreme Commander here commanded, Odes. If she insists on not stopping, you will use some coercive means to drag her into the barracks. ”
