Chapter 1: The Eve of Summer
It's a pure white city. It is definitely not an exaggeration to say that it is pure white. Because the city is made entirely of marble, quartz bricks and jade.
The city is located on a plain surrounded by mountains. The mountain ring is the Ahorreas Mountains, and this plain is called Tum*. The plain is approximately oval in shape from northeast to southwest. The city is on the central axis of the plain, slightly to the southwest. The city sits atop a hill called Amungvaris. The city is more or less circular in shape, with two gates, the north gate facing north and the main gate facing east. To the south of the city is a hill protruding from the edge of Amung-Vares, on which a watchtower is built. This hill is called the Hill of Watch. Sentinels watched the city and the plains from the watchtower, though nothing should happen.
At the southwestern end of the central axis of the plain is just past a canyon sunken in the mountains. There are six gates in the canyon, and the outermost gate leads to a cave that the people of the city call the Hidden Road. It is also the origin of the wadi. The wadi originates in the middle of the hidden road and flows south for more than a dozen miles before joining the great river West Ruian.
The city is called Gondolin. Three hundred years ago, Turgon, the son of Finn Guoyi, discovered this fertile land under the guidance of the water god Uomu. Turgong wanted to build a city modeled after the Western holy city of Tirien. It took decades for the construction to be completed. Two hundred years ago, it was about 116 years before the Noldor elves living in the coastal cities of Wenyamar and Nevrast, ruled by Turgon, moved here completely.
In order to keep the city private, Turgong issued a decree that anyone who entered the mountain without permission would be forced to stay in the city. If the person is reluctant, then he can choose to be sentenced to death. The method of execution was to push him down from a gap in the hill not far from the north gate, the Black Rock Cliff Karagdur, and bury him at the bottom of the mountain. No one in the city is allowed to go out of the city.
It's been 316 years now. For two hundred years, the city has lived in peace. Even the turmoil of the war in the outside world can hardly affect the city. Outside the surrounding mountain, only two people know the location of the city. One is Fingon, the elder brother of Turgon, and the other is Turgon's father, Finguo, the supreme king of all the Noldor elves on Middle-earth.
Turgong did not grow old or die with age, like other elves. Gennies are immortal unless they are killed or have their lives taken by disease. And elves hardly get sick. Therefore, the years that elves have spent in the world cannot be measured by the standards of us humans.
Human beings, even us, have not yet woken up, nor have we ever appeared in the torrent of history. The emergence of human beings is not long in the future, so we will not explain it for now.
Speaking of Gangdorin, because of the influence of the divine power of the tributaries of the Xirian River, and because of the hidden location of the city, no outsiders have ever entered the city by mistake. In the surrounding mountains, there are countless secret passages to escape outside the city, because two hundred years ago the sub-god Saldo warned of the doom of the city of Turgon.
That's it for Gondolin, many of the Noldor elves, most of them, love Gondolin as much as they love the city of Tirien on the top of Mount Tuna in the West. There are twelve families in Gondolin: the Royal Family, the Golden Flower Family, the Yongquan Family, the Winged Family, the Mole Family, the Rainbow Family, the Feiyan Family, the Sacred Tree Family, the Liangzhu Family, the Snow Tower Family, the Angry Hammer Family, and the Harp Family. The laughter and laughter of these families filled the Gondolin. But in the royal family, there is a female elf who is extremely disgusted by the seriousness and boredom of Gondolin. He was Turgon's sister Arityr.
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
It is surrounded by mountains that surround the city, like an airtight wall that separates the Gondolin from the vast expanse of Bereriand. It gives you a feeling of being breathless. There are many pine and cedar trees in the city, which are tall and cold, but there are no forests. This is already the northern part of Bereri Ryande, so most of the trees are coniferous. The only thing the people of the city of Gondolin can see every day is a small patch of coniferous forest outside the city on the plain of Toum*.
The streets in the city are crisscrossed and dazzling. Roads cut cities to pieces and isolate people from each other. There are many tall houses in the city, which are close to each other, so that the horses do not have enough room to gallop and lie lazily in the stables. The city is quiet, and although there are many people on the road, people don't talk to each other very loudly, at least not loudly when they don't have to. If someone coughs, the silence of the city is broken in an instant. There seems to be an old smell in the city. Although the city glowed, it seemed to dim with the passage of time.
These are the feelings that Gondorin brought to Arityr. In general, it is lifeless. This feeling is strongly subjective.
Early one morning a week ago, Turgun gathered some of his cronies in the King's Square around the King's Tower. After that, Turgong and his cronies rode out of the ring mountain. Turgong went out hunting. This is in preparation for the celebration of the "Summer Gate". The Summer Gate is a festival of the Noldor Elves, the last day before the arrival of summer. And today is the gate of summer, and it is also the day of Turgon's return.
Arettir is the youngest child of Turgon's father, Fen Guoyi, with whom she lives.
She had a delicate and beautiful face that an ordinary elf woman should have. From a human point of view, this can already be regarded as a fairy-like appearance. She has a graceful figure, wearing white silk clothes, and her dress is simple but gorgeous. Judging by her appearance, she is just the age when she has just grown up. Of course, it's not appropriate to measure elves by age. She and her brother looked about the same age, but the two were born hundreds of years apart.
Arettir's disgust with the tedious life of Gondolin was not a matter of a day or two. He was now walking out of the King's Tower, accompanied by a maid.
The gate of the King's Tower faces a fountain on the west side of the square. The fountain was bubbling with clear water. The delicate carvings on the fountain are pleasing to the eye. In the midst of the glittering splashes, Aretti saw a girl's face. His face was so handsome that he could be considered beautiful even from an elf's point of view.
Arettir rubbed her eyes, "I'm afraid it's because it's too boring and hallucinating, right?" the maid looked at her suspiciously.
Next to the spring, there are two fake trees. One of the two fake trees glowed with silver, and the imitation white flowers on them seemed to be in full bloom, but one white flower fell from the branch and floated on the water. This tree is carved from white jade, and the other glows with a golden glow, and it seems to be full of golden fruits.
Only then did she realize that she had stood too long, and quickened her pace and walked south through King's Square. There are many workers in the square carrying the marble tables. Arettir knew it was tidying up the venue for the evening's celebration.
In front of him came an elven man, handsome. His skin is delicate and smooth, and his fingers are slender and bewitching. He has blonde hair, unlike the black hair of other Noldor elves. He was dressed in a white cloth garment studded with diamonds and silver. He was flanked by a tall waiter, his face hidden in his hood. The waiter's cloak was made of precious cloth from gondolin.
The elven man's eyes were full of determination, but he was slightly less wise than Turgon.
The man bowed, stood still, placed his left hand on his chest, and extended his left hand towards Arityr. And Arettir saluted him in the same way.
"White Princess, Your Highness Arityr. Hello!" the man said in a magnetic voice.
The princess smiled, "Hello, dear Lord Glorfindel!" said Arettil, "today is the gate of summer, and summer is coming. So I went to the temple to pray. You must have come back from there, right?"
Glorfindel nodded, saluted the princess again, and left with the attendant. The princess watched as Glorfindel walked away. "Your Highness. The waiter whispered, "Who is that blonde man?"
Arettir glanced at her, "You don't know?" she was surprised, "He's the lord of the Golden Flower Family, Glorfindel." "Does he have the blood of the Vanya?" Most of the Noldor's blonde hair is a mixed race of the Vanya!" "No one knows about this, maybe!"
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
After leaving the south side of the square, they walked a short distance down the street and saw a tall white tower on the left. The tower reflects the sunlight cast from the sky, shining brightly. The tower is hexagonal in shape and is surrounded by spiraling staircases. The handrails of the staircase are decorated with black stone carvings, made of the same stone as the bricks at the top of the tower. These black rocks were collected by the craftsmen of Gondolin from the black stone cliffs of Karagdur, near the north gate of the city. Most of these craftsmen belong to the Hammer family, who are closest to Orri, the god of earth and forging, but that was only in the past. Because of the sins they committed in the Western Continent, the Noldor have long been abandoned by the gods. They can only blindly worship the gods in the eastern continent, trying to obtain the gods' forgiveness. But since the day they left the Western Continent, only Uomu, the god of water who cares most about them, has intervened in their fate.
Therefore, the people of Gondolin built a tower and worshipped the gods in it. The tower was called Gar Aenian, "Land of the Gods". Most of the inhabitants of the city call it the temple. The top floor of the temple is where the gods are enshrined.
The maid remained at the bottom of the tower and waited by the steps. Arettir walked up the stairs alone. With each step, the footsteps are heavy. She looked up, but it was as if there was no end in sight.
Eventually, though, she did make it to the top. The staircase ends in front of a large gate inlaid with black stone. The black stone has a messy and beautiful pattern. Entering through the main gate is a long carpet of red cloth with gold trim on both sides. The carpet stretches all the way to the end of the hexagonal palace. The palace is supported by marble columns on both sides of the vault. At the end of the palace are two stone statues, three on the left and three on the left, for a total of eight. These are the eight most powerful gods among the gods.
On the left side against the wall are three stone statues of male gods, and on the right three are one man and two women. The two deepest ones are a man and a woman.
Arettir went straight to the deepest part and stood in front of the stone statue of the male god, bent his index finger in front of his forehead, and bent slightly. This stone statue is a wise deity with a very majestic appearance. He wears a crown on his head and an eagle on his shoulder. His shoulder armor was decorated with eagle feathers. He sat upright and looked at each other, his robes dancing in the wind.
"May the Veil of Alda, Lord of the Sky and the Wind, Lord of Alda, always protect me and my people. β
With that, she walked over to the stone statue of the woman and saluted again. The statue depicts a goddess of extraordinary appearance. She was dressed in silk and embellished with sparkling diamonds, like stars. She also holds a large number of diamonds in her hands, which are worth a lot of money.
"God of Stardust and Light, Veda after the stars, may the stars shine on our path. β
Of the three statues on the left, the middlemost one is a tall, shirtless male deity. He had short brown hair and held a hammer with fire shining on it.
"Ori, god of earth and forges, friend of the Noldor, may the treasures of the earth continue to prosper in Gondolin forever. β
On the roof, there is a chandelier lit with candles. A gust of wind blew from outside, and the chandelier shook and creaked boringly.
The second stone statue on the left is a man dressed lightly and with long and slim hair. He carried a longbow on his back, decorated with ornate notches. He had a horn around his waist. He held the reins in his hand, the other end of which was tied to the body of a steed. The steed was majestic, with one of its front hooves slightly raised.
"Olomi, god of beasts and hunts, may the sound of the horse's hooves of the Pony of Nahar and the sound of the horn of Villaroma echo forever in the land of Beleriand. β
The third stone statue on the left is a man wearing a cloak. He hid his face in his hood, crossed his hands over his chest, and stood beneath his feet a number of elven-like men much smaller than him. Those are like the souls of the dead.
"The god of death and judgment, the soul of Mandus, may you bless all my people who have died, and let them live happily in your temple. β
After bowing to the three idols on the left, Arettir walked over to the first idol on the right. It was an old man. He wears a crown of helmet and is adorned with spray. He was dressed in scaly armor and shimmered silver. Behind him was a cloak that resembled a great wave and had a splash of water at the end. He wears a horn around his waist like Olomi. But the horn looked heavier.
"Uomu, the god of the sea and water, the lord of the waters, may the Sirian River always protect us"
The second on the right is a goddess dressed in a silk robe embroidered with leaf patterns. She stood barefoot on a meadow where buds were sprouting and flowers were blooming.
"Yavanna, the god of vegetation and nature, the nurturer of trees, may the Noldor be as evergreen as trees. β
The third one on the right is the last idol of the Aritirshiri, still a goddess. With a sad expression, she was removing the hood of her burlap cloak. She had a diamond on her cheek, and it was her tears.
"God of grief and mourning, merciful Nena, may your tears wash away all Elda's pain. β
A gust of wind blew into the palace again, the chandelier shook again, and the flame of a candle was blown out. Arettir frowned after repeating the salute to the gods. She looked at the extinguished candle and yawned. She shook her head and quickly ran to the door, looking out of the tower. She saw a man in the direction of the main gate of the city, escorted into the gate by two soldiers. Arettir didn't know what was going on there and wasn't interested.
When she prayed earlier, she didn't pay any attention to the gods. All she was thinking about was walking in the mysterious woods, galloping across the vast plains.
Arettir ran down the stairs as quickly as the maid Elena looked at her in amazement. The princess sped past her, and was soon far away from the tower. The maid tried to catch up, but couldn't. She didn't understand why Arityl was running like that.
That's because Arettir had made a decision: she had to find a way to get out of Gondolin.
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
At the main gate of Gondolin stood many soldiers in armor. They all looked cold, wore green armor, and had serious expressions. Their green shields have a tree pattern made of silver, the same as the notches on their scabbards and blades. Their leader is Gardo, the lord of the Sacred Tree family, who is distinguished by his height and appearance. The rest of the soldiers were also members of the Sacred Tree family.
The gate was made of steel, and there were watchtowers on both sides, which were heavily defended by soldiers.
Gardo was standing on the inside of the main door, with a mace hanging from his waist, his usual weapon. He saw Groffindel, Lord of the Golden Flowers, approaching from King's Square on the road directly opposite the gate, accompanied by attendants.
Gardo greeted him: "Golden Flower Lord Grofindel, why did you come to the main gate?"
The two each saluted by placing their hands on their chests and then placing their hands on each other's shoulders. Glorfindel spoke: "Hello, Gardo! It's noon, and it's time for a shift." Then my family will take over, and take your family back to rest!" he said, "Today is the Summer Gate, you can go to the temple to worship." β
Gardo smiled and bowed, "I'm sorry for you!"
At this time, a shout came from outside the main door: "Open the door!"
Then, the main door opened. Two soldiers in silver armor escorted an elf in a gray cloth cloak in. The gray cloth cloak had a leaf-shaped brooch pinned to the front chest. One of the two soldiers had a wooden bow in his hand, as if it were from the gray-robed elf. One of the soldiers spoke, "My lord, this Sindar elf has sneaked into the Tum* Plains from the south. β
"He's found where Gondolin is, so we took him and took him to the city. Another soldier said.
Glorfindel looked at the two soldiers of his family, was silent for a while, and said to the gray-clothed elf, "Why did you enter our land?" he said, the elf bowed his head and was silent, and Grofindel glared at him, "Answer me, gray elf!"
The Grey Elf struggled, but did not break free: "Our kingdom, Doriath, is to the south of you, beyond the mountains. My king, Eru Singar, ordered me to search for abundant veins in the Creselin peaks around the mountains of Ahorias, so I stumbled upon the hidden plains of the mountains. The main door began to close slowly.
Glorfindel was still glaring at the Grey Elf, and Gardo stepped forward and patted Grofindel's chest and looked at the Grey Elf: "According to the rules of our kingdom, you will be forced to stay in the city. You can live with us in the city of your own volition, and if you don't, we'll have to put you in a cell and be executed at a later date, even if you're not a spy for the enemy!"
The gray elf squinted at the gate that was about to close, and sneered: "You Noldor elves, criminals who killed the Tellerie clan! I don't want to stay in your city even if I die!" He shook his body, pulled one arm out, stepped off the ground, leaped up, landed on the shoulder of the other soldier, kicked hard, knocked the soldier down, and landed a few feet away. The Grey Elves are light, far surpassing many of the Noldor Elves. He stooded sideways through the main door, and the next moment, the main door was shut.
"The prisoner escaped!" shouted Grofindel.
Footsteps began to be heard on the ramparts. Then both lords also ran up the city wall to watch. The gray elves had already run half a mile away. The archers on the walls began to shoot arrows at that place without stopping.
A few seconds later, the gray figure on the plain fell to the ground and did not move.
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
Arettir slowed down as he approached the main door. She gasped for breath, bent over, and rested her hand on a marble wall. There was a noise ahead, and she saw the guards at the main entrance. She waited for a long time, and the other side of the wall gradually fell silent. The streets were full of people, and soon a crowd of people gathered at the gates of the city.
"That's not good!" Arettir frowned, "There are too many people, and it's not easy for me to get out of town." β
Footsteps could be heard behind her. It was the maid who caught up with her: "Your Highness, go back to the King's Tower!" Arettir glanced at her: "Go back!
Arettir waved his hand and turned to leave. The maid grabbed her from behind. She shook her hand and hit the maid in the face, and the maid covered her face and sat down on the ground. Arettir didn't look at her and ran to the city gate. She squeezed through the crowd and walked to the gate. Glorfindel stood there. Gardo had just left with the soldiers of the Sacred Tree Family. Arettir took a deep breath and came to Glorfindel, controlling his eyes from shaking and staring at Glorfindel. Glorfindel looked at the princess.
"Lord Goldenflower, I'm going to the other side of the mountain now. "My brother should be back soon, and I'll go to meet them." β
Grofindel nodded, without any doubts. The door opened. A soldier pulls a brown steed out of the stable next to the gate. The dress on Arettil didn't bother her. She stepped onto her horse and hastened forward with a flick of the reins. The sound of horses' hooves was tight, and Arettir descended the steps outside the main door down the hill Amungvaris. She rode her horse across the plains.
At this moment, she saw a dead body lying on the ground to the south, wearing a gray cloak and full of arrows.
"This curse ban!" said Arettir indignantly.
Within a few minutes, Arityl came to the mouth of the very secret rift in the mountains. Looking down from above, you can see six doors lined up in the rift. From the outside of the mountain to the inside, there are the gates of wood, stone, bronze, iron, silver, and gold. The outermost wooden gate rests against the mountain. It gives you access to the hidden path at the bottom of the mountain. After a few miles down the dark cave, you will reach the other end and exit the mountain. The dark cave was originally created by the erosion of a tributary called the Wadi River that flows into the great river Xiruian, and I don't know how many years it has been eroded. Gondolin workers chisel the cave into a regular shape.
At the mouth of the rift, a group of soldiers in silver armor guarded it. They stood on the inside of the Golden Gate. They are all members of the Yongquan family, but their lord is not there. In the sky, the sun is slightly westward. Arettir jumped off her horse, patted her skirt, and walked over to the guards. "Your Highness Princess!" the guard bowed deeply.
"I'm going to meet Turgong on the other side of the Hidden Road! Please show me the way!" said Arityr.
The guard nodded: "Guardian Captain Ellen Machir is at your disposal!"
The captain called two more soldiers. The three of them came around Arettir and escorted her beyond the mountain. The Golden Gate opened, and they passed through the first gate. Then the other doors opened. They made their way to the wooden gate without hindrance. There, they stopped for trimming.
The sun has set in the west and is starting to turn red.
As she moved away from Gondolin, Arityr's heart beat faster and faster. After a short pause, the two soldiers fetched two lanterns. The lamp glowed softly blue. There was no flame in the lantern, but a light emitted by a special crystal. This lantern is known as the "Lamp of FΓ«anor". The wooden door opened, and it was pitch black inside, and the murmuring of running water could be faintly heard. "Let's go, Princess!" said Ellen Marchiel, his voice repeated over and over again as he walked to the mouth of the cave.
By the light of the lamp of FΓ«anor, they walked through the hidden path. The sound of the water grew louder and louder, but the sound of Arityr's excited breathing could hardly be drowned, and *naked reverberated through the cavern. Ten minutes later, they saw the source of the wadi: a clear spring on a rock face. The spring water flowed down the rock wall and down the cavern. You can already see the red light in front of you, which is the color of the setting sun.
"I'll have to find a way to get rid of them...... Arettir muttered.
Ellen Maquir looked at her, "Your Highness the Princess, what did you say?" Arettir turned his pale face and shook his head. Her heart began to beat faster again, and she felt the coldness of her hands, as if the heat had concentrated on her head.
The wadi grew wider and wider, and after another ten minutes, the river reached a width of thirty feet. But that depth is only up to a person's knees. The people walked on the banks of the wadi. The water of the wadi makes a crisp sound.
Suddenly, the three soldiers stopped, fell to the ground and fainted. Arettir was startled and looked at them in horror. Through the faint red light ahead, Arettir felt that he saw the faces seen in the fountain of King's Square in the reflection of the wadi river.
But she immediately saw that this was a good opportunity to escape from her follow, so she didn't think much about it, just picked up a lantern and ran away. Now only a few minutes away from the mouth of the cave, freedom is ahead! At this moment, Eren Marchir suddenly opened his eyes and sobered up, looking around in confusion. He immediately climbed to the river, picked up the water and splashed it on his face. He stood up, suddenly remembered something, looked at the entrance of the cave, and saw Arettir running wildly.
"The princess has run away!" shouted Ellen Marchir. The shout also woke up the other two soldiers. They immediately jumped up and chased after Ellen Machir.
Seeing someone chasing after him, Arettir immediately threw away the lantern and continued to run. With no lighting, she accidentally straddled in the wadi, her boots were completely soaked, and the water splashed and wet her hair and body. The silk dress on her body was wet on the surface of her snow-white skin, clearly revealing her seductive figure. But now, she can't care about that much. She ran all the way down the river. The river gradually reached her waist, but the current gave her a great push. She scurried through the cavern, the sound of rushing water. The three soldiers behind him went into the water to chase after them, but they were stopped by the current and could not move an inch. "Come ashore and chase after you!" shouted Ellen Marchir.
So the three soldiers climbed back to shore, and by this time the princess was only a few feet away from the mouth of the cave. In front of Arettir was a dazzling red light. She climbed ashore and galloped excitedly, her heart full of desire to embrace the light. She opened her arms.
Suddenly, an arrow flew in from outside the hole. The arrow grazed Arettir's left thigh, slicing almost perfectly, causing no damage, and landed on the rock wall. Arityl's long dress was punctured, revealing her fair skin. Startled, Arettir fell into the water, holding her hands on her chest and panting loudly.
When Arettir came to his senses, he saw four handsome men running on white horses. Of the four, one was TurgΓ³n. He raised the trumpet of Gondolin and blew it, and the sound of the trumpet resounded through the plains around the mountains. There is an elf holding the reins in one hand and an elaborately carved wooden bow in the other.
The elf with the bow was Duirin, the lord of the Feiyan family. The other two, one of them was tall. He was the tallest lord of Gondolin, Punrod, leading the two families of Beam Pillar and Snow Tower, the remaining one wearing black robes. His body size is slightly chubby, which is rare among elves. He had black natural curly shawl hair, tightly locked lips, a slightly pale look, and a sly look in his eyes. He is Salgant, lord of the Harp and Mole families.
Arettir got up and tried to take a few more steps, but was surrounded by four people.
"What a offense, Your Highness the Princess!" said Duirin.
Arettir felt something annihilated, and she couldn't tell. The blood-red sun descended below the horizon, and it was dark. She thought: Maybe the sun is gone, right?
