Grafted plants using the grafting method have a low position of binding between the scion and the rootstock, so they are susceptible to soil contamination. Moreover, adventitious roots growing from the joint position will make the grafted seedlings lose their disease resistance and cold tolerance.

In addition, the scion and rootstock are also prone to break from the joint, resulting in grafting failure. In addition, because the grafting method is grafted with roots, it is necessary to break the roots after the scion survives, so it is more time-consuming and laborious.

But also because it is grafted with roots, the scion is not easy to lose water and wilt, so the requirements for management after grafting are not too strict, and the success rate of grafting is relatively high. When grafting cucumbers in early spring, the most popular rootstock is black-seeded pumpkin. This kind of pumpkin has a strong affinity with cucumbers, and the survival rate of grafting is very high. It is not only resistant to low temperatures and high diseases, but also has no adverse effect on the quality of cucumbers.

The growth rate of cucumber seedlings is slower, and the growth rate of black-seeded pumpkin seedlings is faster, so it is necessary to reasonably stagger the sowing date in order to make the two seedlings reach the growth stage suitable for grafting at the same time. Therefore, in the actual grafting process, it is generally necessary to delay the sowing of black-seeded pumpkin as a rootstock for several days.
