Chapter Ninety-Seven: Cleaning Up the Mess (I)
The family politely made room for Moyer next to Gwen, but the former intimate atmosphere was now shot and stuffed into the refrigerator.
Gwen sat dignified next to her father, and she could feel his stepfather's anticipatory aversion to Moyer.
When two men who have slept with the same woman sit at the same table, especially in front of one's children, there is definitely a feeling of rivalry or hostility. Gwen's father was not like that. Moyer was as calm as the proverbial cucumber, without any annoyance or concern. He quietly talked to people he knew, asked them about their survival experiences, and even told a few jokes and laughed nervously. Even Suya's roars, moans, vicious teasing, and deathly gaze could not affect Moyer's arrival. Whenever Helena, Su Ya, and even Kwan Yingshan wanted to go to Maya, they had a unique impression that they were fleece.
"I'm looking for you, you should know. Moyer turned to a frightened Gwen, who didn't believe a word of what her father said. "I've called you many times. β
If there was one person at the table who seemed surprised by Moyer's unknown demeanor, it was Gwen. For some reason, her father spoke to her with a reserved mood, carefully formulated his words, and thought twice before saying them. Gwen said, measuring Moyer with her bright hazel eyes, doubting her father's purpose.
As for the shoes on the other foot, Moyer has been checking on his two children and has been surprised by the changes in them. With Percy, he would have lunch with the boy every other weekend or often attend one of the school's spell competitions. With Gwen, he feels disconnected from her ever since he walked out with a girlfriend too early.
There is no doubt that his daughter has become unrecognizable. Shyness, insecurity, nervousness and obsession with her appearance are gone. Gwen, who was sitting next to him, now had an air of great confidence in her, a confidence that had come with age. She barely wore makeup, which shows that she had grown up from that particular stage of her life, but she was still unusually beautiful even with her naked face. Her skin was pale and flawless, as delicate as a child, and her figure had always been a little anorexic and now supple and well-proportioned, proving that she must have had a good time last year. Moyer was glad to see Gwen in good spirits, because if she was beaten and bruised, starved and abused, his conscience would hardly be reassured.
"Thank you, Dad. Gwen finds it strange to use the cute nickname "father" to address a man she has rejected and forgotten for both lifetimes, but in this case, there is nothing she can do.
Moyer wanted to rack his brains for something to break the icy tension between them, so he wanted to ask her about her training under Henry.
"So, where did the Void magic come about?"
Suddenly, all sounds and actions stopped.
Moyer looked around the table and saw that the surprised expressions of each member were frozen in different stages of surprise, shock, anger, disbelief, and murder. He suddenly realized that he had made a big mistake, and a cold sweat suddenly broke out on his forehead.
Maybe it's not an open secret? Maybe he shouldn't have mentioned it? Doesn't everybody here know?
β...β
Gwen's mouth opened and closed for a few seconds, but Sakura's pink lips didn't say anything. She now knows how her mother feels. She wanted to strangle Moyer here, or at least punch him hard in the stupid face.
Surya buried her face in the palms of both hands, trying to breathe without causing an aneurysm. Tess and Melissa seemed to know, so they looked down at their plates, suddenly interested in the half-eaten sandwiches. The soldier who came with Gwen didn't say anything. Instead, they look as if they're ready to murder everyone at the table, as long as Gwen orders them.
Kwan Yingshan, Tully, Helena, Percy and Tang Yingnian, their faces look like they have seen New Year's fireworks for the first time.
"The element of emptiness, huh, Gwen Helena said half a minute later. "A rare and forbidden element that is said to be second to none in terms of offensive ability?"
By her side, her husband Don's face was not so amiable. As a retired colonel and veteran magician, he immediately became aware of the possible or non-existent connection between the crisis and the suspicious coincidence of Gwen's talent.
"How much do you know about the Black Sun?" Tang asked, his voice echoing through the balcony. "Do you have anything to do with the Mermaid Gate incident?
"Colonel Don," Jonas said dangerously. "I suggest you think carefully about the next sentence. β
At the end of the long table, Don felt the murderous intent of the three people surging all the way. His expression changed to that of a man who had unknowingly stepped on a Ward glyph, and he knew that at any moment now, his legs would be confiscated. Tang Yingnian questioned Wen so bliantly because, in his opinion, a man of her age and originβthe daughter of a yellow man and a nobodyβcould not have enough influence to gain anything but capricious favors. When Henry Kielroy appeared in front of his wife that night, Don thought it was something the judge had done for Suliya. He saw the incredible potential of the girl and understood how doting and discriminatory her elders were to her, but under no circumstances did he believe that the girl would be so engaged.
But his assumptions no longer mattered, and the three battle mages gasped and sharpened their knives around his neck.
"I'm sorry. When the retired colonel apologized to Gwen, his strength seemed to be draining. "It's the pressure, it's the heat. I didn't think right. Please forget what I said. β
Next to her husband, Helena's face alternates with ash and carmine. Elemental of emptiness! the same element as the war hero Elizabeth Sobel! The gears and gears in her head were spinning and turning, foreshadowing something that seemed unattainable not so long ago.
Percy - a salt mage.
Gwen - Twin Elemental Lightning and Void Mage.
Helena moved her eyes slowly until she met Moyer's eyes. The careless fool was now scratching his head apologetically in an aggressive, careless way, which annoyed her exceedingly. She bit her lower lip in frustration until her lips turned white. Surya's talents are magic and fire, and her gifts are summoning and fire. Their deceased grandmother was Metamorphosis and Water, which had been passed on to Guan, and then Richard.
For Gwen and Percy, their children may have more fatherly talents than she does.
Is leaving Moyer a good choice? If Helena had put up with this capricious irresponsible performance any longer, she would most likely have killed him with an ice axe in her bed. What she regrets is that all the potential, all the talent, even now has to be wasted. If Moyer had only used his talents, she might have married another Gunther Schultz by now.
Other people at the table may be thinking the same thing. With genetic talent prevalent, Gwen and Percy's unusual element of negative energy can only come from God Himself, or from this idiot who even stuffs his sandwiches to the brim. Whatever the reason, it is easier for those who come together to believe in perfect conception than Maya, giving children their gifts.
"Please, Major Doon, it doesn't have to be like this. Surya looked at his children and their spouses, her eyes flashing with the smell of two black, burning coals. "I assure you, those present can keep it a secret. If I remember, Gwen's talent was meant to be made public, wasn't it?"
"The plan has changed, Opa," Gwen said politely to her grandfather. "In... After the death of Judge Kilroy. β
"Of course. Surya nodded knowingly. He was aware of this, but didn't talk to Gunther in detail, who would be the one to tell him the news. "Later then?"
"I hope so, Opa. I believe there will be many opportunities. β
Surya turned to the table.
"I swear to your astral soul that you will not say a word about Moyer's mistakes. β
Kwan was more than happy to help, and so was Tully.
Surya noticed that Richard was completely unfazed during this time.
"She told you before?"
"About three months ago, Grandpa. β
Terry and Kwan turned to look at their son, who began to swear aloud to his astral soul that he would believe Gwen's secret. The oath is not binding, but manifests itself as a strange phenomenon that constantly reminds people that betraying the oath can ultimately affect the progress of one's spell training, especially when it comes to tuning that draws power directly from faith and faith.
While some people are socially pathological to the point of ignoring their vows, this is likewise a symbolic manifestation of one's willingness to submit to the authority of others. Like many rituals in the world, the act itself is not as important as its performance, as it is an invocation of the will of another person, forming the actual purpose of the oath.
Don followed her without incident, and then their attention fell on Helena, who gritted her teeth and gritted them, exhausted by a simple vow.
"Percy, you too. "Surya is ruthless.
"I don't want to. Percy was born at a rebellious age, and he thought it was a clear favoritism to force him to make some incoherent vows for his sister.
Surya's glare may have set the tablecloth on fire.
"Opa, it's okay," Gwen interjected, not wanting to make things more awkward between Percy and herself. She knew that the oath was not so magically coercive, but a psychological deception. Alicia once boasted to Gwen that when she forced a felon's oath, she would brand her with fire. In this way, every time the villains think of resinning, the pain in their scars forces them to reconsider their life choices.
"Ungrateful little weasel," Surya spat out, clearly upset that Percy was challenging his authority.
The table fell into an awkward silence. The murderous gaze of the gathered people fell on Moyer, who happily drank his Chardonnay.
There is no doubt that the luncheon is over.
"Let's stop here. Jonas stood at the table. "We'll be ready. As soon as our 5th and documents arrived, we left. β
Moyer held up a finger in the air. "Ah, about this..."
Gwen sharply turned to her father.
"Dad, I didn't mean to be rude, but why are you here?"
Moyer's guilty face turned to Gwen with a look of helpless consternation on his face, like a sailor who had been tied to a ship by his companions and now found himself on his way to Barbados.
"I'm your fifth man!" he shouted with the air of a third-rate magician, "Tada!"
"Yes, that's good, Dad. Gwen's expression was like seeing her own shit in front of a guest. "Then why are you here, really?"
Moyer's face turned miserable.
"I was told that I had to accompany you on this trip because you are a minor and therefore must be accompanied by a guardian. β
"I'm three years old...... I'm sixteen! Dad, I'm not a kid! And I'm the best guy in the military. Not to mention that I can take care of myself. β
Moyer turned to look at the three soldiers, who were grinning confidently at him, as if to say, "We'd love to make hamburger mincing on your face." β
Moyer made a look of disbelief and exaggerated sadness. "You don't want me to come?"
"I don't know," Gwen said coldly. Her father had ruined their lunch, and the man had only been here for an hour. Gwen just wanted to leave immediately, with or without supplies, but she had to wait.
"Very well, please call Gunther and tell him I've been discharged," Moyer said hurriedly, handing Gwen a texting device that was already dialing.
To Gwen's surprise, it was linked.
A private message spell bloomed in her ears.
In the midst of a crisis, how could a mid-level confessor casually call the paladins in the tower?, Gwen threw a conflicted look at her father and quickly left the table. She recited the ridiculous name back and forth, but retreated to the second living room and closed her glass door.
"Brother Gunther, what happened, and why is Moyer our fifth member?"
Gunther's laughter came from the sound of the incantation.
"Where is he? I'll send the documents over now. Have Surya retrieve the package from the teleportation circle he set up for your training. β
"Thanks, Gunther, but what about my dad?"
Gunther's voice became more stern, and he continued.
"Gwen, that sounds a bit excessive, but how much do you know about your father?"
"Useless, lazy, a feminist and a treacherous scoundrel, who's a water cut-off? I think he's four or five, I'm not sure. He does menial technical work at the Shield. β
Even behind the speaker equipment, Gwen could feel Gunther winceing at every thorny insult.
"But...... I think he's a good dad. Got us through the dark times of our mother's absence. I don't remember when he was with us, I didn't have anything to eat, to live in, to wear. Even though we live in working-class ghettos, we feel safe. β
"That's it?"
"There's more?"
Gunther was silent, as if thinking about something.
"Did he save our lives by giving you the pendant?"
Gunther was right.
Gwen felt her conscience be overwhelmed by her shawl-draped guilt at night, wielding a baseball bat nailed with nails.
Her father did give her the pendant.
But Moriah foolishly implied that it was for the sake of having children, wasn't it? What kind of lascivious father gave his daughter a fertility pendant? Or was it clueless as her father expected today?
"You might be interested to know," Gunther continued. "Your father was the only survivor of the Watson Bay shield station bombing. That's where your father works. Of all the mages stationed there, including a guard of level 5 high-level battle mages, your father, the 'useless technician', is the only survivor. β
Now Gwen is silent. She recalls seeing the explosion at the station. She remembers that moment vividly.
"Before we knew about the merfolk invasion, I received a call from your father asking about you and your brother's whereabouts. When I asked him what happened to the attacker, do you know what he told me?"
"They ran away?"
"No, Gwen. He told me they committed suicide en masse. β
It's not funny at all, but it's her father's careless, morbid humor.
"One more thing. When my recovery team entered, the debris was covered with negative energy residue from white powdery crystals. β
"She's a smart girl.
Her father's survival, salt slag, Percy's talent.
"Not only that, but we found an old acquaintance of yours on the spot. β
"I'm not familiar with his colleagues," Gwen said confusedly. She remembers seeing them when she was younger, but her memories are blurry.
"We found the remains of Edmund Moore Ravencport at the scene. β
"Don't ring the doorbell. β
"Also known as the Dust Demon or Mind Mage, Edgar. β
Gwen held her breath.
I was scared of my body. Crushed, squeezed, limbless, castrated. β
Gwen felt her mind fill with Edgar's hallucinations, and the man was on the verge of violating her body and mind. When the man tried to drain her self-esteem, she had already felt the evil and darkness in his heart, and his vicious ability was immeasurable. How could such a person die so easily, like that? She had always hated the next time they met, playing this scene over and over again in her head, and now that bastard was food for bugs?
"Wait, did you just say 'castration'......" Gwen tried to put it with a euphemism. "Servant of the Sultan's harem consciousness?"
Gunther smiled uncomfortably.
"It's quite intense, I'm afraid. Smashed a pair of eggs. β
β...β
"I'm sorry, that's what the report says, there's not much left. Anyway, why do you think anyone would take so long to cause so much pain to such a man? I mean, it's not imaginary, after all, your father risked exposing himself just to blackmail you and your brother's position. If you don't mind me saying that, Gwen, despite Moyer's nonchalance, he cares very much about his children. β
Gwen looked out at the long table, where his father was fending for himself with a bottle. Suria and Jonas talk in a low voice, while Richard and Moyer talk happily, ignoring his mother's frantic tugging at his shirt sleeve.
In a serendipitous manner during the Renaissance, this scene somewhat reminded Gwen of a notorious dinner. Will their families still be together like this, and what will happen if they go their separate ways?
"Gwen?"
"I think I see, Gunther. β
"Good. I should never be between father and daughter, but I hope you will resolve your differences. Also, I'd love to know what the Kirin pendant does and if we can replicate its effect. I'm waiting for a report on your father's past, but maybe he'd like to let you know something about him. β
"I'll do my best. β
"Very well, sister. I'm sure Yue, Avia, and Huitu are waiting for you. God forbid. β
Gwen walked out onto the balcony. From the direction of the workshop, a servant named Nome approached with a package covered with protective signs.
"This is for Mrs. Gwen's party. The maid placed the box on the table and curtsy.
The family turned and addressed Gwen, who was looking intently at Moyer with the unresponsive information device in her hand.
"I've confirmed with Gunther that he's our man," Gwen announced.
Paul, Taj, and Jonas glanced at each other, suggesting that they had just stepped on Gwen's dog's previous shitlog that was born on the lawn.
"I'm not going to pull your legs," Moyer said, when he noticed their constipated expressions.
"He won't," Gwen supports her father as she has a new, previously unreliable confidence in this frivolous fellow.
