Chapter 16: A Calm Night
After seeing Walter's injuries, Frank returned to the room alone. The luggage that was originally packed was turned back out. After revisiting the letters from this time, Frank took a deep breath.
"The sudden appearance of the red dragon and Owan, and the escape of Owanman today. These things that are usually difficult to encounter all broke out at the same time. There are still a lot of things that feel wrong, but don't say what's wrong?" Frank frowned and turned his heart upside down.
In the midst of inexplicable uneasiness and anxiety, Frank leaned against the head of the bed. Fell asleep unconsciously.
With the crisp chirping of birds, Frank woke up. It was already dawn at this time, and after a few movements of his aching neck. Frank walked out of his room.
The soldiers on both sides of the corridor stood with tired faces, and the soldiers did not dare to slack off in the slightest because of last night's incident. Seeing this, Frank quickly ordered the men to go back to rest. The soldiers left the corridor with thanks.
The entire corridor became empty in an instant. Frank walked to Walter's room, and as soon as he pushed the door, he was stunned. It turned out that Walter was not alone in Walter's room at this time. There was also a man who was lying on his stomach beside Walter and was sleeping.
Probably sensing the sound of the door being pushed, Walter, who had been sleeping, opened his eyes. Seeing his father standing at the door, Walter subconsciously sat up. Just as he got up, he also saw the person sleeping next to his bed.
Walter looked at the sleeping man carefully, with a sense of familiarity that he hadn't seen in a long time. He shook the man gently, and the man jerked to his feet. Only then did it become clear that the grizzled man in front of him was Winter Ryder.
Winter's presence surprised Frank once again. So he hurriedly stepped forward, took Winter's hand, and asked, "What's the matter with you? Didn't you wait in the camp? Where are they Breel?"
Winter rubbed his eyes with his other hand, and said sleepily, "I don't know!
"Okay, then I'll ask you that. First of all, why aren't you with Breer? Frank asked anxiously.
"I saw that you were all going to fight the red dragon, so I wanted to see it! But there were no red dragons along the way. When you're hungry, you think of the Western Fortress you mentioned. I'm here. ”
Listening to Winter's understatement, Frank asked, "Then how did you get in, no one will open the city gate for you at night." ”
"I don't think I need to open it! There's a huge hole in the bushes, and I follow it and come in. I know several of the soldiers here, and after asking them about it, I came here. ”
The more Frank listened, the more strange he became, and he asked, "What did you say, there's a hole?"
"It's just under the northernmost wall! I couldn't get in at first, so I walked along the wall, and suddenly I found a rabbit in the grass, and I wanted to catch it and eat it, so I followed the rabbit in. ”
Seeing his father looking at him suspiciously, Winter opened his eyes wide and said, "What's wrong with you? I heard that there was a fire here yesterday." You won't be without a good night's sleep! ”
"Brother, where is the hole you are talking about, can you show us there?" said Walter.
"Okay. Come with me. Eager to prove his case, Winter grabbed his hat from the table. He took Frank and Walter with him to the place he had said.
There is a small ditch at the corner of the city wall to the east, which is used as a drainage channel, so the debris accumulated over the years makes it emit a foul smell all year round. And that's why no one has ever looked closely here.
When Frank went down and examined it carefully, he realized that it was indeed the same as Winter said. The sheer amount of space is large enough for an adult to pass through, let alone a half-grown child.
The hole is narrow at both ends and wide in the middle, so it's hard to see the problem from the outside. That's why it's always considered okay.
Seeing this to the east, Frank and Walter hurried to the west side of the city wall to check carefully, and found that there was indeed no problem with the west entrance, but a thin adult could still get through it.
Seeing such a scene, Walter suddenly understood: "Father, will those Owans be the fortress that passed through here?" If they take advantage of the darkness of the night, it will be difficult to be spotted. ”
"It's possible, really, why didn't you find out about this place earlier? It looks like this is the hole in the whole fortress!" Frank grimaced.
"It's no wonder! It's full of mud and garbage, and no one would have thought that this place could be a passageway. Walter looked at the mud on the ground.
"Oh! Okay, let's get this place plugged up first! Looks like this fortress needs to be inspected. Frank clapped his hands, turned and returned to the hall.
Frank immediately called Brown and Jones and told him what Winter had found and what he had guessed. Hearing this, both of them were very surprised.
While they were still discussing, Daniel came to the hall. Seeing everyone's solemn faces, Daniel said bluntly: "Brother, I think this western fortress is far from being as impregnable as the legend says. I'd better go back to my Red Dragon City, and tell me as soon as the king has any reward. ”
"I'm bothered by this, just go!" said Frank, waving his hand.
With Franck's permission, Daniel turned and left the hall. After packing up, he left the Western Fortress with his own army.
Not far from the western fortress, Daniel, who was on horseback, looked back at the majestic structure. A smile appeared on the corner of his mouth, and he left without looking back.
After explaining the repair plan, Frank decided to keep Brown in charge of the Western Fortress and had him thoroughly inspect all of the fort's facilities. Any problems that may arise should be reported in a timely manner.
After receiving the order, the Brown Knight said yes. And reassure Frank that nothing like this will happen again. Frank didn't blame the Brown Cavaliers too much, but told him to be careful.
When everything was ready, Frank left the Western Fortress with his two sons, accompanied by the Jones Knights. They were accompanied by the few Owan who did not escape.
In the evening, the group came to the camp where they were stationed in the forest.
At this time, in the camp, Brell had received the news that the Red Dragon had been killed, and was waiting for Franck's return with Opp. The meeting of a few friends was particularly exciting.
Frank told them with great interest about Walter's battle with the dragon and the hunt for Ovan. In the narration, Frank deliberately exaggerates some things, putting all the merit on Walter. And there is no mention of the matter of the Western Fortress.
Hearing these wonderful battles, Brell and the others began to praise Walter. This made Walter on the sidelines feel very embarrassed. Although he wanted to deny his father's statement, from Frank's eyes, he understood that his father was establishing his prestige for himself. He smiled and nodded.
At the dinner table, people still drink as if they have forgotten everything that happened before. Winter had been listening to their conversation, but he still didn't understand much of what the adults were saying.
What made Winter feel stranger the most was that his father seemed to have changed as a different person, completely devoid of his usual seriousness. He thought to himself that maybe it was the character of wine that made everyone poop!
After a hearty drink, everyone began to fall asleep. Winter and Walter went to rest in a nearby tent.
"Brother, I saw the corpse of that dragon. You're huge! You're amazing. Able to defeat such a powerful creature. Winter's eyes were full of adoration.
Seeing Winter looking at him like this, Walter took out a stone-like thing from his pocket and said, "You see, this is what I got from Ovan." According to them, this is a symbol of dragon slaying. ”
"Show me. Winter clamored for a look.
Walter handed the dragon's heart stone to Winter, who took the stone and looked left and right, and there was nothing special about its rough appearance. So he said boredly, "What's so special about this? I think this thing is a stone." It's boring to be a baby. ”
"I don't know much about it, so I can only go back and give it to Master Tom to see. Don't just think about fighting, you have to study hard. Walter said as he took the Dragon's Heart Stone from Winter's hand and put it in his pocket.
Listening to Walter's words, Winter blinked, and suddenly thought of Haidt, who had always been obsessed with dragons. The playful nature of these days made him forget that this quiet brother was still in the city.
Thinking about it, I heard a snoring in my ears. Winter saw that Walter, who was lying next to him, had fallen asleep.
The night was surprisingly quiet, as if the animals of the entire forest had rested with them, without a sound. Everyone is immersed in dreams and enjoys this comfort.
Frank was the only one who couldn't sleep for a long time, not because he was worried about another incident like yesterday's at the Western Fortress, but because of his own restless heart. It was the first time in many years that Frank had felt this way.
In candlelight, Frank thought for a moment and wrote a letter. As the pigeon carrying the letter was released into the air in the night, Frank's heart calmed down a little as he watched the pigeon go away.
Early the next morning, after Brell and Opp had put their troops in order, they said goodbye to Frank and returned to their respective territories. Only Frank's team was left in the entire camp.
The corpse of the red dragon, the prisoners of Ovan, and the wounded all need to be transported. Frank feared that something would happen over time, so he gave Jones Knight the task of transporting the wounded and the corpses of the red dragon, and the prisoners were escorted by himself and Walter.
Hearing that the Jones Knight went first, Winter yelled that he wanted to go back as well. The reaction was not what Frank expected. Thinking that it might be better to go back, he handed Winter over to Jones Knight.
After all the preparations were made, the Jones Knight took Winter with him and left first. A day later, Frank and Walter also set out on their way back to Dragonclaw.
