Chapter 9: The Living Corpse

In the faint light of the fire, a mad figure could be seen climbing into the small window of the farmhouse. Screams came from the farmhouse immediately.

There was a rustling sound of running in the darkness, like a man, and like a beast that had never been seen before.

Griffith's scalp tingled, and he rolled over and jumped onto a nearby roof. As soon as he climbed onto the roof, he saw a figure flickering through the darkness, and subconsciously grabbed it. The grasp was missed, and the wrist was pulled and rotated, driving the body to be lifted in the air and falling towards the roof.

Griffith had never encountered such a throw, and he was in a hurry to stabilize his center of gravity, but he was thrown out of the double heavy armor, smashed through the roof with a thud, and fell in with the straw and the beams.

The sturdy figure also lost its footing at once, but its movements were not chaotic, rolling and spinning in the air like a cat, deftly adjusting the posture of landing, and stepping on the body of the apprentice knight to land steadily.

"Whewβ€”β€”!"

The thump on the ground and the squeeze of his abdomen nearly made Griffith vomit his stomach. Before he could recover from the shattered fall, the figure that stepped on him had already twisted his wrist and snatched the long sword and pointed it straight at his throat.

The cold blade suffocated the air.

"Ahhh~ When did you run to my feet?"

The dilapidated hut was very quiet for a while.

Griffith opened his eyes, and in the pale green moonlight, Galadia was pointing a sword at himself with a serious face.

"Hurry up, the living corpses are about to come and eat our brains!" the elf took a step off the midshipman's belly, "Goblins are followed by living corpses, is this small village a hatchery for evil gods?"

"There was an adventurer who was infected with this corpse plague, and in addition to this, the corpses of some villagers disappeared at midnight," Griffith struggled to his feet, ignoring the pain in his abdomen, and hurriedly asked, "Where did you go before?"

"Find a place to hide," replied the elf casually, and then added, "Declare in advance that if you suspect that the beautiful and elegant elf has anything to do with this evil deed, you will be hanged from the treetops." ”

Griffith sighed, shook his head, and said, "I just wanted to say that if we take turns to rest on guard, we might be able to stop this." ”

The elf shook his head and dismissed the idea word for word: "We've only known a fewβ€”smallβ€”timeβ€”alas!"

Griffith suddenly felt that once he and Galadia were talking, they were a little endless. In such a chaotic state, two people standing in a dilapidated farmhouse with no vision are simply out of their minds!

The Cadet Knights swallowed the thought and turned to walk out of the house. He had just pushed open the wooden door of the hut when a dark figure suddenly squeezed through the crack in the door, grinning at his wrist to open the door.

"Bell!" the fangs burst out of the iron gauntlet. Not far away, Galadia jumped backwards in fright.

Griffith felt only a sharp pain in his wrist, as if he had been stabbed with a dagger. He raised the axe in his left hand and slammed it down at the shadow. The shadow was hit the head, and it exploded like a watermelon, and he collapsed on the spot.

"Get out of here!" Griffith shouted. The elf immediately followed, and the two of them rushed out of the house together.

Beastly shadows wandered through the village. They still retain the silhouette of a human, but their forelimbs are swollen and elongated, and they often run on all fours like wolves. Teeth and nails have become razor-sharp jagged and dagger-like, and can even climb rooftops and fences with ease.

These monsters are both humans and goblins. At first, it was only sporadical, and within a few minutes it was already a horde of raids and predators.

The apprentice knight and the elf walked for a while and found that it was very dangerous to be exposed. The monsters that roam in the dark will emerge from the darkness in the corner of the wall at any moment to attack, and the only safe place seems to be to escape the village and hide in the woods.

Galadia quickly glanced at the woods, as if thinking of a way out. After a while, she hurriedly said: "I can't go out, today's moon is a green moon, and the demons in the forest will be particularly crazy and powerful!"

"Then go to the village chief's house, which is stronger!" called Griffith. He had just fought a battle at night, his equipment was very badly damaged, and his physical strength had only recovered four or five percent, and he was not sure that he would save his life in the escape.

The two covered each other and ran all the way, and the occasional demon encountered along the way could be easily killed. However, it didn't take long for the hordes of monsters to notice their whereabouts and scream after them.

"This is it!" Galadia also seemed to have a good view in the darkness, grabbing the midshipman who was almost missing the village chief's house, and pushing him into the nearby fence.

"Open the door!" Flipping over the fence, Griffith immediately hammered the wooden door of the large house in front of him. The village chief's bald head poked out of it, and after seeing their faces clearly, he hurriedly opened the door and welcomed them in.

Several people had already gathered in the spacious house, and in addition to the village chief's family, there were also Miss Boxer, Miss Ulan, the trainee nun, Mr. Isis, and five villagers.

"It's great that you're safe and sound, gods!" the village chief came to shake their hands in surprise when he saw the two of them appear alive.

"We're going to block the entrances and exits and wait for dawn. Galadia quickly dodged the village chief's hand.

Before everyone answered, Ulan was already dissatisfied and said, "If it weren't for waiting for you, we would have blocked this door long ago." ”

Such a big temper...... Seeing that the elves were about to open their mouths to reply, Griffith hurriedly took the first step and said: "The physique alienation of these monsters is very powerful, it is useless to shrink, we have to think of saving more people." ”

Before Ulan could attack, there was already a heavy knock outside the door, mixed with a terrifying roar. A group of living corpses rushed out of the gate and were trying to break in.

The villagers were in a mess, and Griffith drew his sword, opened a crack in the sturdy wooden door, and stabbed it out before the elf could stop it.

The blade felt through the flesh, and at the same time, a powerful impact was about to crash open the door.

Griffith leaned against the door, stabbing with his sword in his right hand. The flesh and black blood of the living corpses flew everywhere.

After a few minutes, there was silence outside the door. One corpse after another was piled up in a low wall outside the door.

Griffith, feeling that his strength had been drained again, hurriedly stepped back and closed the door.

Calm returned to the big room, and the people who had not been able to help looked at the bloodied knight with various expressions. Finally, the village chief said, "Maybe we should block the door and wait until dawn." ”

"It will be dawn in a few hours, and the chief of the village has a point," said Mr. Isis, who also made a point, and then pointed to the chimney of the house, "I think it should be blocked up there too." ”

Okay...... Griffith nodded tiredly and stepped over to the side and sat down. The villagers immediately ran over and blocked the door behind the door with tables, chairs and cabinets.

......

Hordes of yells rang out outside the house, and I don't know how many creatures have been transformed into walking corpses.

Everyone hiding in the house did not dare to turn on the lights, and sat down in silence.

Isis tended to the wounded, Ulan sat with Sister Trainee Pacifica, and the village chief huddled together with the villagers. Everyone sat in silence and waited for the dawn.

Griffith sat not far from the elves. As an extraordinary person in Sequence 9, although his physical strength is beyond that of ordinary people, it is also desperate to not have a rest in such a continuous battle. Before he knew it, he fell into a deep sleep.

I don't know how long it took for Griffith, who was groggy to wake up. He heard a soft gnawing sound in the darkness, like a rat chewing on the corner of the table, and the panicked sound was amplified in the silence, which made people feel very eerie.

There were also illegible whispers, as if someone was speaking, and like a curse. The voice seemed to be some kind of ancient secret language, and it was impossible to understand the meaning of it.

"Wake up. ”

A clear whisper sounded in his ears, and Griffith felt his arm being patted, and a faint scent of woodland grass danced softly at the tip of his nose.

Griffith looked up and found Galadia kneeling beside him, holding his arm with both hands.

"Follow me, lighter. ”

The apprentice knight quietly got up obediently and followed the elf to the kitchen near the living room. Galadia carefully inspected the corners of the wall and the bottom of the table, and then closed the door and whispered:

"There's a big problem, the whole village seems to have gathered around us with living corpses. ”

Griffith's eyes widened, "Could it be that all the villagers have been killed, and only us are left?" ”

"Probably not, I can sense more than a hundred humanoids walking outside, judging by the steps of some villagers and goblins," Galadia's smart eyes almost voiced her concern, "Living corpses should have no intelligence, only the instinct to devour and kill. I suspect someone is manipulating these resurrected corpses. ”

"Who could it be?" Griffith blurted out, but immediately had his own answer, "The target is you?"

"It can't be you, the adventurers or the villagers, right? The resurrection of the dead into the walking corpse requires forbidden dark magic or seals, even the senior mages of the Arcane Council are difficult to do," the elf hesitated, but still said, "I came to this village because, according to the guidance of the prophecy, I had to leave my clan to investigate alone in order to find a clue that was crucial to my promotion sequence. The operation was supposed to be kept secret. ”

Griffith said seriously, "If it's based on such an assumption, then it makes sense, you need to have enough people to hunt down an elven ranger.

"As it stands, the mastermind behind it has cost a considerable amount of money, and I have never heard of such a thing as creating goblins and living corpses in the core territory of humanity, and the cost of slaughtering just one or two villages is ridiculous compared to the gain. ”

"It's not easy for me to slip out of the chimney now," Galadia bit her lip, "I'm careless~ By the way, there's one more thing." ”

"What?"

"Beware of those adventurers," the elf made a silent gesture with a finger at his lips, "do you hear me? ”

The sound of rats chewing and snorting in the darkness makes people's scalps tingle to listen to. There was also a faint crunch of biting bones.

"Are you sure?" asked Griffith, "she may have just been frightened." ”

"It is not uncommon for you human sanity to be crushed by the unknown and fear, and to become believers and puppets of evil gods," said Galadia Masashiki, "I have heard of a brave prince who fell into irreparable madness after witnessing his people turned into living corpses by the plague many times, slaughtering an entire city and murdering his own father. In the end, he even became a cultist's minions. ”

"He just doesn't have a choice," Griffith shook his head, "and that's not the point. As long as the living corpses don't rush in, we can delay until sunrise. ”

"Sunrise doesn't necessarily work against them, and it's not the pathetic bunch of Bloodborns!" Garadia shook her head, "I have an idea, the people behind these goblins and living corpses are in this big house. ”

"How so?" Griffith hurriedly glanced at the people in the living room, "why do you say that?"

"It's very simple~" Galadia patted his head, "Since the living corpse appeared, I have been moving and changing positions. There are so many farmhouses in the village, and the fact that these monsters can accurately surround them shows that the people behind me know my whereabouts well. ”

At this moment, a heart-rending moan interrupted the conversation between the two. The people who were resting in the living room all woke up.

A strange sound came from the throat of the boxer girl Ulan. Then she stood up and staggered toward the door, muttering unintelligible words.

"Ulan, what's wrong?" asked the nun in alarm. Immediately afterward, she saw her companion frantically push open the table that blocked the door.

"Stop her!" Mr. Isis reacted, shouting in panic, "she's going to put the living corpse in!"

Galadia opened her powerful bow with lightning speed, and the arrow was pointed at the mad Ulan.

"Stop!" Sister Trainee Pacifica was taken aback and hurriedly stopped beside her companion, "What are you doing?

The village chief and the villagers were stunned, they woke up from their groggy sleep just now and saw such a scene, and they didn't know what to do for a while.

"Bang!"

Sharp arrows were shot from the bow, and at such a distance, even if someone blocked it, it would not be able to hinder the elf's archery.

Galadia pierced Ulan's shoulder, sending her and stumbling to the ground.

"Don't!" the trainee nun, seeing that her companion was injured, screamed and struck the elf with the wooden staff in her hand.

Before she could swing her staff, a strong hand grabbed her wrist and knocked her to the ground with ease.

At this moment, there was a dense picking sound outside the house. Hundreds of living corpses let out a low, terrifying roar and began to attack the doors, windows, and walls of the house.

"They're out there!"

"They're coming in!"

The frightened villagers let out a miserable cry together and ran towards the most powerful-looking elf. In the midst of the chaos, Griffith suddenly turned around and pounced on Isis in the crowd.

"Wow!" the mage apprentice screamed and was knocked out of the way, slamming into the wall behind him.

Before the village chief and the others could ask what was going on, Griffith's big iron-clad hand had already picked up the thin Isis and choked him.

"Shall I break your neck, or will you stop the living corpses outside," the midshipman asked coldly.

"You, what are you talking about? I don't understand?" said Isis, flapping and grabbing his arm, struggling desperately.

"It's you, deliberately calling for help in the path you have to go, distracting the forces of support and luring some of the reinforcements to the trap," Griffith said quickly, "Goblins and living corpses are not strong and have no chance in front of organized adventurers and villagers.

"You know the exact location of Galadia, and that's why the living corpses are besieging here. She's your prey. ”

"Isn't that the boxer?" exclaimed Isis, "she's going to let those monsters in." ”

"Maybe, you're all suspicious," Griffith's knife-like gaze flashed with cruelty, "and kill you all, and it will be fine." ”

β€œ......”

A hint of hideousness suddenly flashed in the frantically struggling Isis's eyes, and he grabbed something in his right hand and stabbed it towards Griffith's arm.

"Bang!"

An arrow pierced his wrist and nailed it to the wall. A knife smeared with turquoise liquid fell out of Isis's hand.

Outside, the living corpses were about to tear down the wooden doors and windows, and their withered and rotting arms had dug into the cracks.

"One last time, stop the living corpses. Griffith said coldly, the hand that locked Isis' throat would snap his neck at any moment.

The corners of the pale mage apprentice's mouth suddenly curled. Immediately after, he bit something hard and chewed it.

"Don't let him take poison!" said Galadia immediately.

Griffith pinched Isis's chin with lightning speed. The mage's apprentice screamed and dislocated his jaw.

Spies and conspirators of all races have a habit of hiding poison in their teeth. When they are caught, they can crush a denture with all they need to crush hard, and the deadly poison will save them the rest of the pain.

As a member of the Eastern Legion, Griffith has been involved in the capture and interrogation of spies on several occasions, and breaking their jaws is the only effective way to do so. However, having a lot of experience doesn't mean you can get it every time.

Isis's face suddenly turned purple, and white foam poured out from the corners of his mouth. His poison was so deadly that it worked in an instant.

Galadia rushed over to check on the mage's apprentice and glanced at Griffith regretfully.

At the same time, the commotion outside the house suddenly subsided, and the screaming living corpses stopped attacking. There was a jumble of footsteps outside the house, heading in different directions.
