Section E, Chapter 39: Command Position (Odyss)
Seeing another group of ice archers standing in the last battle position of the wall, Odeus looked into the courtyard and was slightly surprised when his gaze shifted to a large tree in the corner: the logistics of the hundreds of soldiers of the Children of Frost seemed to be crowded there with supplies, and at first glance it was extremely spectacular. Icerock must have spent a lot of money on this march - especially in terms of pensions and battle damage from the two catapults.
All the battle preparations and troop deployment of the Children of Ice have been made, and now only the Children of Frost have not fully adjusted their defenses. Thanks to the level-headed commander of the Icemen, Zadek, the two armies were able to form an alliance...... Pulling out his pocket watch, Odysse looked nervously at the time: according to the Snow Raven's estimate, at this time, an army of the Corruptor could appear behind the trees at any time.
The snow and fog are like this, and I don't know if we can detect the enemy in time...... As the already gloomy and sunless sky grew darker and darker, Odysse felt a sense of unpleasantness: it was almost four o'clock in the afternoon, and by then it would be completely dark. When the time comes, the Corruptor's night vision will have a big advantage.
The atmosphere in the entire outpost was extremely oppressive, and people lowered their voices, constantly communicating and questioning restlessly. Beyond the buzzing whispers was the voice of the shorter Zadek yelling orders. A squad of spearmen was placed behind the iron gates by his order, and on the platforms at the top of the arrow towers and even the barracks, there were constantly Loze's longbowmen rushing to them, seizing every high ground with an advantage in view and convenient for pouring arrows.
If the Corrupt hadn't come, how would this serious farce end? Looking at the dense soldiers and Zadek shouting in the same hoarse voice, Odeth coughed violently, and thought to himself: No matter what, since both sides of the truce have already paid heavy casualties, it is impossible to say anything about the fight again. The most likely outcome would be to swap the Ice Rock Outpost for the other party. However, in this case, lying about the Corruptor's military situation will become a lever for the other side to refuse peace talks, and future diplomacy will be difficult to deal with - and most importantly, the credibility of Eternal Winter and the Children of Ice will be insulted.
But the enemy will definitely come, and Vicol can't lie...... Repeatedly reminding himself to trust Vicol, Odysse was clearly aware that his actions were a sign of not fully believing him. If I really believed in him, I wouldn't have such thoughts. Moreover, he subconsciously seemed to have been suspicious of Vikol's departure: what the hell was he doing? Could it be that he was fleeing the battlefield for some money...... No, he could never be such a coward who was greedy for life and afraid of death. Otherwise, he would not have accepted the task of destroying catapults, let alone risking his way across the battlefield to find me fighting on the front lines.
Because he shouted too much during the previous command, Odyss's throat continued to itch and swell, and the pain was unbearable. Even, when he swallowed the saliva, he would feel a hint of sweet blood. Pulling his coat tight, Odys felt a dry feeling in his mouth and coughed several times in succession until his abdomen was coughed with a dull pain. Grabbing the kettle hurriedly handed by the attendant, he gulped half of it and roughly stuffed it back to the attendant: "Go to the cellar and get me a bottle of wine, and ask for that kind of cold white wine." β
"Yes, sir. But your throat may be inflamed, and it's not suitableβ" screwed the lid on, the attendant said cautiously.
"Don't worry so much, just follow orders. Impatiently interrupting the squire's words, Odyss's throat was slightly relieved by the cold water, and the swelling seemed to subside. Overwhelmed by the pressure of the command that was about to engage the Corruptor, the commander desperately wanted a sip of cold wine to moisten his throat and calm his emotions. As for how bad it is for the throat, Odysse doesn't bother to think about it.
Waving his squire away, Odys shifted his gaze to the logisticians who were constantly carrying tall braziers and iron cylinders filled with arrows, and he frowned: it seemed that the rockets he had ordered to be made had begun to be deployed: their shears were tightly wrapped around gauze and soaked in iron drums filled with fuel. Before launching, simply hold the shears close to the brazier to ignite them. This fuel is not easily blown out by strong winds and has a high temperature after combustion. Expecting them to work wonders on the Corruptor, Odysses once again cast his gaze on the snowy fields beyond.
Despite his best efforts to maintain a confident appearance, Odyss, who was beaten by snowflakes, could not suppress his uneasiness: he always felt that something was too weird. According to the previous actions of the Black Ice Army, the commander behind them is definitely not simple, and it should be able to take into account the situation that we will find the traces of the army and enter the outpost together to defend. Then, this army must have siege weapons.
Just as he looked around, anxiously waiting for the squire to bring wine, the crowd on the city wall suddenly erupted in horror and shouted, "The Corruptor is here!"
"Shut up!!Stay disciplined!" Impatiently squeezing the soldiers' whispers with an angry roar, Zadek looked solemn and walked quickly to Odyss: "It seems that your snow crow did not lie about the military situation, Commander Odes...... It seems that we must have a formal truce from now on. β
"Alright, less. Ignoring the word "formal," Odys looked at the looming, slowly approaching army in the distant mist. Although he knew in his heart that he had to join forces with the Ice Rock people at this time, the tone on his lips was still extremely tough: "The words will be said first." We're not allies for the time being, though. β
"I don't need you to remind Lao Tzu about this. Glaring at Odys with a look of disgust, Zadek said angrily: "Divide the duties now, so as not to misunderstand for a moment - before the enemy army breaks through the floodgates, we will each give orders for our own archers." After the main gate is breached, the battlefield in the courtyard will be handed over to me, and you will take over the command of the city wall. β
"Why are you commanding the infantry?! Hearing this, Odys said dissatisfied: "I will be in charge of the ground, otherwise there will be no talk." β
"Don't forget that it's our Ice Rock who have the upper hand now, Odys. Glaring at the commander with disdain, Zadek turned his head to look at the approaching enemy troops: "I don't want to quarrel at this juncture. Since we have a lot of people, we have to listen to me for command and distribution. Nothing else. β
How old are you? This is our outpost! Swallowing the words that almost blurted out, Odysse gritted his teeth angrily and acquiesced to Zadek's request for the sake of the overall situation. The pupils of the dotted orchids pierced through the snow mist, and the figures of the corruptors in full metal armor became clearer and clearer. A short and passionate horn sounded from the top of the barracks, and the aftermath echoed throughout the outpost, raising the tension of the soldiers to the peak.
The atmosphere around him returned to the dead silence that had suffocated before the outpost was attacked, but this time the silence was deeper and darker - after all, the enemy was the Corruptor, the old enemy of both clans.
