Chapter 26: Mind Reading (II)

It was the ruins of an ancient city. This ancient city is still relatively well preserved, most of the buildings in the city are still there, but no one has cared for them for a long time, and most of the carved lacquer paintings on the outside of the buildings have peeled off, and the remaining parts, although they seem to be lost in black and white, are still ingenious and beautiful.

Between these magnificent stone buildings, there are also neat paved stone paths, and tall lamp poles are lined with them. It's just that the city has been lost for a long time, and these street lamps have been reduced to vines, weeds have grown between the cracks of the stone paths, and even trees have squeezed through the stone slabs and risen from the ground.

There seems to be something unusual about the buildings, and although they have lost their ornate ornamentation and reveal a thick and simple interior, they still look sturdy and sturdy, as if they have not had time to be renovated, rather than have been vacant for countless years.

But as Faust's gaze moved, he realized that it was only a trivial anomaly - whether it was magic or psionic energy, it always explained the problems of these buildings, but the rest of the picture was really difficult to explain.

Even though the picture was black and white, he could still see what it was, even the slippery touch, hear the sound of the thing pulsating, and even see the ominous red and white—the tangled meridians, the vertical and horizontal bloodlines, the things that should be inside the living body, but they appeared in the streets, connecting the buildings.

The buildings that were connected by it also changed their appearance, like huge organs, not only the architectural style changed drastically, but the color of the faces also became dark, and the flesh and the rock were perfectly spliced together, and there was no difference in the slightest—the blood vessels were interspersed in the rocks, as if they were not stiff walls, but soft muscles, and the stones were wrapped around some organs, which looked like arthropod exoskeletons rather than rocks made of inorganic matter.

These sights, while bloody and eerie, are not uncommon to those accustomed to the mysterious. But Faust felt dizzy when he saw the truth through memories and decades.

Faust immediately understood that this was the crux of the mayor's crux and the source of the ancient taboo in this ancient city. He trembled, his teeth chattered, and he could barely suppress his psychic power—it felt strange, it was so different from being disturbed by other psychic warlocks, it was like...... It's as if his own spirit is boiling by itself, and Faust, who is hidden in the depths of his heart, is about to say something to Faust outside.

Faust did not allow himself to speak, knowing that if he heard the truth, he would be in a situation from which he would never recover, even more so than death.

Faust closed his eyes. In this gallery of the mind, the eyes, ears, mouth and nose are indifferent, and the so-called closing of the eyes is actually cutting off a part of the senses.

In the mental world, Faust's eyes suddenly exploded, splashing blood and minced flesh covered half of his face, and his eyelids had long since flown away, leaving only two vague blood holes in the place, and even the orbital bones could be faintly seen.

Although Faust has no eyes, he can still "see", but it is separated by a layer from before, like seeing flowers in a fog, and he can only vaguely perceive the general outline of the picture, but he cannot see the details - this is the reason why Faust has cut off part of his perception.

The mayor and his party were equally shocked by the horrific sight, but unlike Faust, they didn't seem to feel the pressure of the horror.

They were terrified by the strangeness of this city of flesh and blood, and the courage to stand up to the beasts was lost at this moment. Faust saw the native-leader kneeling on the ground, seemingly in awe of the city, and the other four were horrified.

The five of them wanted to get out of the city, but they couldn't find a way out, as if their world had been filled with a city of flesh and blood, and no matter how they went, they were all in the city.

Faust notes that although the picture is obscured by thorns, the architecture of each picture is different, which means that the team is not lost, and they do enter some kind of strange realm.

Soon, they ran into a problem. It's not that there are any monsters in the city, although this city of flesh and blood looks bloody and weird, and there are some strange embryos that can be seen in some sarcomas, but on the whole, the city is calm and terrifying, and there are not even insects.

That's the problem the team faced - they ran out of food. In the middle of the jungle, these seasoned lumberjacks would never have anything to eat, but they made their way into the city.

There are indeed some plants here, but I don't know if the gods are playing tricks on them, and all the plants they see are highly poisonous and inedible.

After a period of struggle, the mayor and his party decided to eat the strange pieces of meat. Faust understood this - plants are poisonous and do not eat meat, do they eat stones?

But that's where the disaster began. The meat didn't seem to taste very good, and the expressions of the five people eating meat together were full of disgust and sorrow. But at last there was no need to starve to death, and the mayor seemed to be in a good mood, and the thorns around the painting did not even grow spikes.

They ate meat and searched for a way out, and after a few more days, the atmosphere seemed to have recovered slightly, and it was no longer as oppressive as it had been before and after the encounter with the beast.

However, the beasts appear in the next picture - this time their shapes are more abstract and look more like words than pictures, perhaps the mayor has forgotten the appearance of the enemy.

The herd had a new leader, much shorter than the previous giant ape, not much different from the abstract black shadows behind it, and very similar in appearance, except that it had four eyes on its face.

The herd seemed enraged at the sight of the five people eating the flesh of the City of Flesh, and they quickly became manic, even more ferocious than the one in the jungle.

Moreover, this time the leader was much more cunning than the giant ape, and he learned the lesson of the previous one, and did not choose to fight hard, but hid in the herd, not giving people a chance to attack, lest the herd lose its command and make a mess.

This time the five-man team failed to perform another miracle, they were defeated one after another, and the gray-haired old man sacrificed himself to finally cover the four companions and escape into a building.

The herd seemed to be so afraid of entering the building that they didn't even clean up the battlefield before they dispersed like a dark cloud.

The mayor and the other two were too badly injured to move, so the matter of cutting the food was left to the indigenous leader. The meat was unpalatable when it was first eaten, but now those who are still alive are accustomed to the taste and can even taste good or bad.

At first, they just quietly ate meat to recuperate from their injuries, and the turmoil seemed to have passed. But within a few days, the body of the indigenous leader began to be wounded, it turned out that those dark shadow-like monsters did not retreat, they hid in the shadows, only waiting for the five to come out, and then attacked.

It's getting harder and harder to go out to gather food, but luckily the monsters don't want to get too close to the building, so the leader can also pick up the corpses of the black shadows on the battlefield before.

But the corpses were prone to decay, and within two days, the people were eating carrion.

Faust paused slightly, and the thorns around the next painting were extraordinarily secretive, and the thorns were long and pointed. It seems that Mayor Mare hates this memory.

On this day, the team leader brought back carrion as usual, and everyone had no firewood, so they could only eat it raw. This time the meat tasted a little different, but everyone didn't care - the taste of rotten meat always changed from day to day.

Until Mayor Mare's got a ring in the meat - it was the ring of his former companion.

The expressions of several of his companions were extremely excited, the mayor seemed a little timid, but he was trembling and did not say anything, and the leader of the team looked calm, as if explaining something.

Faust could probably guess that the range that the black shadows did not dare to set foot in was not very large, the carrion here was very limited, and after eating the black shadows, naturally the corpses of their former companions were left. In order to survive, they had to eat.

However, One-Eye and Scar showed no appreciation, and they drew their swords against the leader - as you can imagine, the two seriously wounded were of course unable to withstand the brave leader, and the leader killed them.

The leader didn't kill the mayor, probably because he wasn't involved in the fight, or more likely because he was delirious. He cuts the flesh of his newly dead companions to fill his stomach and even feeds the mayor.

But he didn't eat all the bodies, in fact, the two only ate their muscular hands and feet, leaving most of their bodies behind.

The leader arranged these internal organs, skin, and bones into strange and inexplicable patterns, and he sang and danced around them, as if he was sacrificing to some evil god.
