Chapter Fifty-Nine: Escape
"Run!" "You go first, I'll stop these damn bitches!" "It's too late, we're surrounded!" "The camp now looks even more lively than the previous revelry—at least a third of the people were still busy with their own work, but now it's all hands on deck.
In the panic, some people knocked over the fire, and the camp was dotted with fires, but it was much brighter than before.
An eyestem slowly arched through the dirt, poked out of the ground, and scanned the surrounding scene. Unfortunately, he happened to be in the middle of the camp, in the main venue of the banquet. There are a large number of natives gathered here, and as soon as the eye terrier appeared, it was almost stepped on by a big foot, and it was so frightened that it immediately burrowed back into the ground.
"What is it?" exclaimed the owner of the foot, and at this point in time, when enemies were on all sides, the vigilance of the people was almost at its highest, and any disturbance would be noticed.
"What's it?" someone on the side immediately asked rhetorically.
"I'd love to see an ......eye at my feet," the man's tone was a little suspicious—no one would fail to react to an eye peeking out of the dirt and staring at him.
"Are you mistaken?" his whimsical remark was immediately met with merciless ridicule from his friends, "our opponent is a canopy wolf, not some undead zombie. "It seems that their mood is still very stable, and they even have the leisure to joke.
It's a pity that only here can people be so calm. Most of the wilderness hunters under the old chief were gathered here, as well as a large number of ordinary warriors, and the commoners stood in the inner circle, which was closely protected.
The tribesmen elsewhere were not so lucky, and they were powerless to resist the beasts, so they had to flee blindly. If a few people come together, they may be able to support for a while, but if they never encounter allies, they will only be overwhelmed by the tide of beasts.
After a few more moments, the Eye Terrier emerged from the surface again—this time in a much more secluded location than before, between two tents next to each other.
There is no one standing here, and no one is idle enough to observe this little nook and cranny that obviously cannot fit a wolf during the tide of beasts. As a result, it's a secluded place to hide small things – like an eyeball.
This is exactly what Faust lurks underground. He uses his astral form ability to send eyeballs to the ground and use them to find his teammates.
Soon, he saw Reinhardt and the others. They were gathered in a heap, and seemed to have been given preferential treatment because of Faust, and could stand around the chieftain and enjoy the tightest protection of the wild hunters. The three warriors surrounded the old mayor, who lacked combat effectiveness, and Annabella, who was an assistant, in a more central position, forming a triangular defensive circle.
Faust confirms the location of his teammates and dives into the depths of the earth again. He slowly moved to the feet of his teammates, ready to drag them underground while the chaos was over.
Luckily, the Chief was nearby, and Faust was able to take the Chief and a few Revenants with him in addition to completing the scheduled rescue mission.
He didn't think much of these natives - if they could repel the wolf tide, then there was no need to engage in any "big hunt" to suppress the wolf pack, just wait for the canopy wolves to get together and then kill them directly.
"It's really ...... that the canopy wolves suddenly formed a wolf pack this time," the old chief's face was a little solemn. Some civilians may not be able to see it, but as a chief, he still has the ability to do so—the canopyed wolves are in good order, apparently forming a group.
In front of these canopy wolves, the chieftain's wilderness hunters can't protect all civilians at all - the wilderness hunter is actually an advanced ranger, mainly strengthening survivability and endurance, and is an excellent long-distance running force, but the ability as a defensive force is a bit insufficient.
They were able to do their best, but they could not stop the canopy wolves from killing the natives. Therefore, the chief's heart was also very heavy, and he lamented in a low voice: "I'm afraid this time...... The loss will be huge. ”
Faust felt the same way. However, his thinking was much clearer than the chief's—the Revenants obviously did not possess supernatural abilities, and in that case, even if they were defensive professionals such as the Shield Guardians, they would not be able to stop the huge canopy wolves.
All they can do is keep themselves alive. Faust thought maliciously, I guess these people may not even be able to save their own lives.
"Chief, Lapra they can't stop it!" a middle-aged warrior with scars limped up to the chief and hurriedly saluted, "Let the Revenant go up!"
The chief waved his hand and did not speak, just frowned and continued to look at the battle ahead. The average samurai of the natives had suffered heavy losses, and they had fought fairly well, almost each of them being able to take out three or four canoped wolves - but that was it.
There are thousands of canopy wolves, and there are only about a hundred samurai in front of them. Even if they can maintain a 1-3 or 1-4 battle loss ratio all the time, they will definitely not be able to consume these hungry wolves who seem to have no concept of morale.
The common warriors of the natives were always at the front line, followed by the dozen or so Revenants who existed as Warlords and a second line of defense, behind which the Chieftain and Faust's teammates were located.
After that, there were the ordinary Burakure, and some strong men spontaneously formed a line of defense. They picked up worn-out weapons and even some production tools such as pitchforks in an attempt to protect their wives and children. But it's better than nothing.
The array of samurai had been torn through a few gaps, and although the hungry wolves that had slipped through were quickly killed by the revenants, they still caused a commotion among the civilians behind them.
The Chief sighed, and though he knew it would be useless, he decided to send out the Revenant troops. I saw him make a complicated gesture, and soon, a dozen revenants shouted and blocked the torn line of the samurai.
The appearance of the Revenant seemed to have aroused the morale of the samurai, and they all took the lead, and for a moment, the canopy wolf could not advance even half a step, and even slowed down the attack.
Faust in the underground shook his head, a short burst would consume a lot of stamina, in fact, they could hold on for even shorter time, not to mention......
Faust mustered up the rest of his psychic abilities and unleashed a telesensing spell - given the predictable battle tonight, he was now able to save on psychic energy, and had even used primitive eye stalks to spy on them.
If the image presented by remote sensing was seen by the old chief, his face would have been even more ugly - behind the chief's back, a pack of canopy wolves had sneaked up.
The Canopy Wolves seem to have a shrewd leader, and although the full-scale sneak attack failed, it was still able to organize a second round of sneak attacks, a wise decision to let the wolves on one side attack with great fanfare, and then let the wolves on the other side sneak up on the same tactics as before, and their sneak attack tactics were brought back to life.
Faust closed his eyes, the tribe was finished, and they would have to lose at least half of their population to survive the catastrophe - maybe more than that.
The chief was gesticulating, occasionally shouting a short word, directing the warriors and wilderness hunters to hold the line, when suddenly, there was a commotion among the civilians behind him.
The chief's head was only halfway turned when he heard a mournful wail like a wolf's howl behind him, "There are wolves in the back, in the back!"
"Whew. The chief opened his mouth, as if to say something, but the ground under his feet suddenly sank.
