Chapter 19: There Are Wolves in the Forest
The serene fragrance of the grey earl in Gwen's hand untied the knot in her body and mind. Instructor Alexia is here now, everything will be fine. Next to her, Yue baked a sandwich while Avia absentmindedly hung her legs from the edge of a high stool.
The door to the bunker opened with a groan. Gwen saw Deborah's familiar figure push through the heavy door.
"Hey, guys. ”
To Gwen's surprise, Deborah's usual coldness was not comforting. She then noticed the scars on Deborah's arms, including purple spots from her chin to her ears.
"Debb, my God, you're hurt!" Gwen put down her teacup and walked over to her friend and rival. "Elvia!
"Thank goodness you're all safe......" Deborah smiled, backing down.
"Words of healing!" Avia incantated, placing her hands on Deborah's neck and shoulders. Positive energy instantly permeated the deformer, casting a pale green glow as her bruises lessened, becoming a vague mark.
"Thank you. Deborah sighed gratefully, then turned to Yue. "It's really handy to have a doctor on the team, hey?"
"Hmph!" Xiao Yue gasped through her nostrils. She hated Deborah from day one. Surf girls are typical of living in South County and always look down on immigrants.
"So......" Deborah sat next to them, crossing her tanned legs. "We killed about ...... today Oh~130 people. ”
Her eyes met Yue's, and Gwen caught the spark between them.
"It's impressive," Gwen said approvingly, I think we're a century now. ”
"Oh?" Deborah immediately bared her teeth.
"I don't know about this......" Xiao Yue retorted with a smile. "Of course, we don't have enough goafs, but we do have... Oh, a three-level wind wolf, and then - what? a four-level wombat. ”
"One...... Wombat?"
"Yes," Xiao Yue replied uncertainly, realizing that she lacked flamboyance.
"One...... Fighting wombats?Deborah laughed.
Yue's face flushed.
"Henry!" she summoned her second. The soothsayer appeared as if by magic. He had been listening to their conversation backstage and taking pleasure in the girls' competition.
"Do what you have to do," Yue ordered.
"Yes, ma'am!" Henry turned to Deborah, his eyes glinting.
"It's a terrible beast!" he began to speak as Elvia began to giggle. "Stay a moment, Deborah, oh travelers from the other team, and listen to the epic battle of the seven teams returning to our base camp......"
Henry is a good storyteller.
The break room erupted in laughter, giggling happily as Hyung retold the story in quirky exaggeration. Despite what happened, the pleasant atmosphere was a great lubricant to ease the friction of their disastrous trip.
"Gwen killed herself?!" Deborah winked at Gwen.
Gwen grinned sheepishly and modestly.
Debbie... Gwen recalled. In the past, she cut off all contact. In later years, in the dead of night, shallow bathing ideas prevailed. There is always an occasional fantasy "what if" situation. What if she hadn't left school, what if she had graduated with friends, had she gone to the same college?
"Debb ......" she began, and her friend turned around and looked at her with bright amber eyes, a big smile on his face. "Debb, I want you to know..."
"Crack!"
The vibrations that cracked the concrete bunker fluttered like a whip. The students also felt the momentum of the earth's motion causing them to roll off their seats and crash into each other. Deborah falls forward on top of Gwen, who loses her balance and slams the hard concrete.
"Get out!" someone called from somewhere in the room and said, "Earthquake!"
A chunk of the bunker falls from the ceiling and nearly hits Gwen's head.
Gwen's mind is confused, she wants to expand her mana shield, but Deborah lingers on her, it's too dangerous. Unlike Coach Alessia, Gwen's lightning shield allows Deborah to hiss from time to time.
Dobra grunted, pushing herself away from Gwen and holding her friend in the way of another fallen piece of concrete. "Gwen, follow me, build tenacity!"
Jun made a moving ice dome on Elvia and Yue, and the three of them were already moving.
"Gwen, come here!"
"You go! Deb grabbed me. ”
Yue saw Deborah's eyes and didn't give in at all.
"Get out of here!" Gwen spat out.
Thankfully, the steel gates of the bunker fortifications were still intact and could be opened, and thanks to several opponents who created a passageway that the students could easily escape.
"What the hell is that!! someone screamed, pointing to the south. Gwen turned around and saw a mountain, a damn mountain, moving in the distance.
They felt that the earth was starting to move again. Another supernatural tremor passed through the clearing. Around them were chaotic sounds, collapsing structures and gum trees collapsing and snapping, twisted shapes emitting avalanche-like leaves and branches.
"Where's Instructor Burton?" shouted Gwen amid the noise. "Did anyone see Alicia?"
Gwen's response came in the form of a confused and panicked student. It was dark at night, and the moon barely provided enough light to see. What's wrong with all the lights? Gwen realized. Before, the camp was full of lumen balls.
"Dancing lights! Around her, panicked students scrambled along, moving like headless flies.
She realized that they were making things worse. Gwen had previously experienced earthquakes in the Old Continent and knew the protocol for emergency measures. The greatest dangers exist directly inside and outside the building, next to the exits and exterior walls. In such a place, more than twenty kilograms of branches fall like rain, and it is better to avoid the bushes.
"Give it to me!" she began to scream. "Everyone, come on!"
Nobody listened.
"Give it to me!" she cried again, louder and her vocal cords reaching their limit, but only a few students stopped and ran towards her.
"They don't listen!" shouted louder and louder.
"Thunderbolt!"
Gwen sang a basic ditty with a spell. The next moment, there was a loud bang, and a bright white electric light echoed throughout the area.
"Give it to me!" she screamed at them, wishing she had a voice-projecting spell. "Stay away from the buildings, go up to the clearing!
About two dozen students followed. Gwen took them to an area of the camp's clearing, which seemed to be the maximum safety zone against falling objects.
"Where are the instructors?" asked Xiao Yue, puzzled, her voice starting to be hoarse.
They looked towards the main building.
Gwen's heart fell forty fathoms. The two-story concrete shed collapsed into a pile of loose rubble, with huge cement slabs protruding from left to right. The instructors had a meeting - oh my God! Her heart was racing. Is Alexia in there?
"Oh...... No ......," Elvia shouted in panic. "We need to help them!"
"Count me in. Deborah joins them, her bronze skin glistening in the lights of Gwen dancing. "I should be able to move the tablet around with some enhancements. ”
"Alright, Jun, you stay here with the other students, Henry, can you spot the people under the rubble?"
The wound on Henry's forehead was bleeding. He looked at her weakly. The boy's face was filled with fear and fear;
"Avia, help him stop the bleeding. ”
"Understood! Healing words!"
"Who else, who else can help us speak!"
The students remained silent, staring intently.
Damn, they're just kids. Gwen suppressed the disappointment in her heart. She turned her attention away from the students, huddled together like a flock of frightened geese, thinking not of Alexia, Teacher Boone, Mr. Richardson, and the others.
"Ivey, Deb, you're with me. Yue: Can you help Jun control the situation here?"
"You get the idea, boss," Yue replied, firing a few fires into the air to attract anyone who had fallen behind. "Evoke, give me a dancing lamp, confessor, form a cordon, and scream if you see something that isn't human!"
As she reached the building, Gwen continued to shout in the dark.
"Who else can help? I need a deformer! Who of you are an Earth Elementalist?"
Gwen's desperate inquiry went unanswered. Looking at her two companions, she was ecstatic that Elvia was healed and Deborah remained calm. Now more than ever, she needs them to be sober and capable.
The trio walked through the clearing.
Deborah polished her face and tried to lift the rubble up, while Gwen and Elvia stood in a safe place. The wreckage may seem small, but even a small reinforced concrete slab weighs more than a ton, far more than the strength of a junior transporter and a teenage girl.
"It's too much!" Deborah turned and looked at them with a look of utter despair. "It's too heavy for me!"
"Oh, Gwynne......" Elvia's face was streaked with tears. Their poor instructors, did any of them manage to get out? They couldn't all be dead!
"We ...... We have to find other students. Gwen forced her mouth to move. Now is not the time to play Tramp. There must be an adult here to command. "The instructors will put our safety first. We need to do the same......"
"Thank goodness you're okay!"
A familiar voice shouted from the darkness. On the edge of the clearing, the silhouette of a middle-aged man in a coach's tracksuit appeared.
"Mr. Crusoe!" the tension in Deborah's limbs melted. Gwen knew that he was Deborah's homeroom teacher and that Deborah was his favorite.
"Is the others okay?" asked Gwen and Elvia at the same time.
"Someone else is with me, but we need your help. ”
"What's wrong?"
When Crusoe appeared in the light, they could see that he was bleeding all over his body. His uniform was torn, and there were leaves and dust everywhere. Black blood oozed from a piece of turf near his abdomen, and a black, chestnut clot ran down his sweatpants.
"Sir!" Avia shouted, and immediately sprang into action to heal him. "Heal minor injuries!"
"Thank you, dear. He coughed and patted Elvia on the head kindly. "Still, I need your help. ”
Robinson pointed to the woods that stretched out into the darkness.
"I'm afraid Coach Alicia was crushed under a fallen tree, we managed to get her out, but we need a healer to get her out. ”
Gwen's chest contracted and Alicia was injured?!
"Of course!" Elvia readily agreed.
"I'll go with you. Deborah followed.
"Are you alright, sir?" said Elvia kindly to the elderly instructor.
"Thank you. That's it, about a few hundred meters, follow me, beware of the possibility of magical beasts in this area. ”
The party moved as quickly as it could. In the distance, they can see the opening of a fireworks display that seems to light up the sky. A great struggle was taking place, no matter where the creature was, no matter where it was, and the result was a reddish red light that seemed to swallow the night sky.
The light, the color, the unique, the strange red!
Suddenly, Gwen stopped.
No one in their team had thrown anything, but she could feel the flow of air around her change, and the composition of the elements in the area had changed, altered by a mysterious current.
"Stop!" Robinson's voice echoed through the trees, though leaves and branches kept falling each time the ground shook. "Do you feel it?"
"Yes. Gwen prepared a spell.
Deborah regained her bronze skin, close to Gwen, and acted as her shield.
"Elvia, follow us," Gwen ordered. The little blonde girl shrunk her silhouette.
"Deborah. Robinson carefully scanned the area around them and spoke the next sentence carefully. "I want you to take control of Gwen right away. ”
To Gwen's undoubted bewilderment, her friend reached out and grabbed her arm, whipped Gwen so quickly that she lost her sense of direction completely, and then stabbed her in the gut with an iron knee, throwing her down the path.
"Debb, what are you doing!" Elvia cried out in panic, her mind running out of meaningful judgment.
Deborah's grip was like a steel vice, wrapped tightly around Gwen's neck, and then pulled Gwen up, half-choking her and pumping the air out of her esophagus. The shapeshifter's other arm twisted Gwen's wrist tightly, causing Gwen to be in agony. In the midst of her pain, Gwen realizes that she can't cast spells without the ability to gesture and summon.
Crusoe's face changed from a kind old man to one full of menace and malice.
"It's a shame that the fourth layer of fire didn't come, but the deformer is a good catcher. He didn't say it to anyone in particular. His gaze moved up and down over the bodies of the two girls, patting his lips like he did.
"Sir?" Elvia was unaware of the current crisis. "Mr. Crusoe?"
"Run, Eve! Run!" Gwen managed to squeeze between Deborah's fingers, "He's not Cruzoe!"
To her dismay, the little girl did not run. Elvia didn't want to leave her friend behind.
Robinson said quietly as he dispensed the medicine. "Juggernaut!"
In an instant, Gwen realized what had happened to Deborah. It's a forbidden school of magic. They learned it from magicians. The mental manipulation inherent in magic is vetted and can only be used by law enforcement experts. The person before them was not a tower agent, which means he was the more dangerous one.
Elvia's eyes began to glaze over.
No! It's not Elvia! It's not my life, you bastard!Gwen was in a mess in her head.
This time, she's glad she's having terrible control over her pipes. In the midst of the surging emotions, her wake-up signals were activated as before, not triggered by expertise, but by trauma. An electric current poured out of her skin, tearing Deborah's body, dispersing her bronze skin and destroying her entrails in a hysterical charge.
Deborah slumped behind Gwen, who stood behind her and let out bursts of golden sparks, falling unconscious to the floor like an unlaced puppet. Gwen desperately wanted to get down on her knees to see if her friend was still alive, but couldn't ignore Crusoe, who was staring at her flabby jaw.
"Gwen?" Elvia's voice trembled and fainted. Good, Gwen gasped. The Juggernaut didn't take Eve.
Their mentor had told them that the effects of mind control were most effective for the unsuspecting. The more aware a person is, the less likely they are to be affected. In this way, it is very similar to the school of illusion.
"Deborah..."
"Eve......" Gwen puts herself between the mage and her friends. "Eve, I want you to run back to the camp as soon as possible and tell Yue what happened. ”
Elvia's face was full of hesitation, but Gwen's firm attitude quickly dispelled her reluctance. Gwen in front of her now feels so different, so determined and powerful. In the distant light of the fire that illuminates the horizon, her figure resembles a giant!
She had to go, Elvia convinced herself. She owes Gwe a favor to tell everyone about it. This is the duty that Gwen has given her.
"Oh, it's not going to be that easy......" Robinson said unangrily. "Juggernaut!"
This time, the magic was directed at the Light Mage. Gwen's feelings suddenly became creepy. She could feel an alien malice invading her conscience, trying to change her opinion.
And then... Nothing happened.
Exactly. Because what Gwen felt in her heart didn't seem to happen to her personally, but to someone else. She understands these phenomena, but her mind is not disturbed or affected. She is less like a victim and more like a scientist, observing the spread of ink in a container, recording the color and displacement of the ink.
Elvia had now walked a short distance along the line of fire and was soon out of sight.
Robinson smiled at Gwen with an aura of sadistic joy.
"What did you do?" he muttered, his tone full of surprise. "How did you resist my spell? You didn't wear a Psychic Shield Ring. ”
Domination is a fifth-level enchantment! How did a second-level mage with only one sect begin to have the willpower to resist his compulsion?
"You're getting more and more of my appetite, Gwen Song. Crusoe raised his tone dangerously, "After all, you might be my triumph today." ”
Gwen felt a cold sweat soak through her back. This man is very dangerous! she thought to herself, thinking of a dozen scenarios like this: she could buy time for Deborah, or she could run away from herself.
The man began to change, and Gwen felt her stomach churn as the hallucinations on his face completely vanished, revealing a cloak? The figure in front of her was dressed in a vague robe that seemed to distort her vision, almost as if she was staring at the faint shadow of a human figure. The dust around him began to twist, forming small swirls that turned into tendrils sticking out of his body.
"Oh well. The man savored the dramatic revelation. "Let's put our freaks on, shall we-"
"Guide Bolt!" Gwen grabbed him before he could finish, purple energy and particles of positive mana suffocating his body. She couldn't believe that the stupid idiot was still trying to abuse his stupid villain. Then, she turned on her catheter at full speed and threw all of her mana pools into it.
"Thunderbolt!"
The world has turned white.
