Chapter 21: A Night of Terror
It was the second half of the night, and there were barely any stars in the cloudy sky, let alone the moon, and the dense forest obscured most of the sky, so it was only possible to see some of the surroundings in the very limited area near the fire. More than ten paces away, the forest was pitch black, accompanied by the sound of the wind coming and going, as if countless unknown monsters were lurking around, and they could rush out at any time.
Geoff was clearly very concerned about the situation, and he divided everyone into two groups, one for vigil and one for sleep, and then rotated again in the second half of the night. This maximizes the safety of the vigil, but at the same time everyone can only sleep half the time, which will have some impact on the next day's action. However, Geov did not dare to risk having fewer people keep vigil, even half of them did not reassure him, and it was better that everyone did not sleep, but then the next day everyone would not have to move on, so he had to make this compromise.
Osric was also chosen to be among the first to keep vigil, which was exactly what he wanted, and now he couldn't sleep even if he were to sleep. Barney and Lyria were both in the second batch, so both of them climbed onto the trunks of the trees they had chosen earlier to rest, and even though there were so many people keeping vigil, the two of them still didn't want to sleep in their tents. The mercenaries of the night vigil stood around the camp at intervals of a few steps, and then some climbed the tree, some found a dry place to sit down, and the rest just stood against the trunk of the tree, and at this density, if someone was attacked, the companions next to them would immediately detect it and raise the alarm.
The whole camp fell into a deep sleep, the tents were full of people, and the fire crackled and gradually darkened. Fraser sat on the trunk of the tree, drowsiness coming over him, and he sensed his surroundings for the last time, without any trace of magic, which made him relax. So he decided not to use his mental strength to wake himself up, but to let tiredness invade his whole body, and he fell into a deep sleep unconsciously.
As time passed, the mercenaries of the night vigil began to get tired, and the whole day of marching had exhausted them, and several of them had dozed off. Half of the mercenaries were on vigil, which made them think that it was lucky that someone was still awake and that falling asleep would not affect anything.
Osric didn't dare to let up, not knowing why he always felt that tonight would be in danger, so he kept his spirits on the darkness ahead of him. Suddenly he heard the sound of something rubbing against the grass on his left, but when he jerked in that direction, the sound was gone, and he couldn't see anything in the darkness. "Sey, do you hear Sey, there's a strange voice over there. ”
He didn't get any response, and fear crept over him. "Did you hear say, you idiot!"
"What...... What's the matter?" Sey finally woke up. "Who's calling me?"
"It's me, Osric, did you hear anything just now?" Sey's response made Osric finally breathe a sigh of relief.
Sey's voice was sleepy. "What sound, I didn't hear, oh...... Maybe I rolled over while I was asleep. ”
"You bastard fell asleep at the vigil, don't you want to live? Geoff will kick you out of the gale. ”
Sey didn't respond again, and just then, there was another sound of rubbing against the grass, and Osric's heart rose to his throat again. "That's the voice, Sey should have heard it this time, Sey, you're not going to fall asleep again, Sey, Sey!"
Suddenly, a fishy smell rushed to Osric's nose, and before he could vomit, he was kicked in the back and everyone flew out. "Who the fuck kicks ......" Before he could finish speaking, several balls of light floated in the air, lighting up the camp, and he was speechless by the sight before him.
Frazier stood where he had been sitting, red blood dripping from his sword, and at his feet was an unknown object that had been cut in half. In front of Fraser, countless similar objects were slowly approaching, their tentacled feet moving on the grass, making a rustling sound that Osric had heard before.
"It's ...... Where's Sey?" Osric looked at Fraser, bewildered.
"Wake everyone up!" Frazier waved his left hand, and a wall of fire caught between the flesh beasts and himself, temporarily blocking their progress.
"Hell!" Osric couldn't move his legs, he didn't even have the strength to stand up, so he had to crawl towards the tent with both hands and feet. "The flesh beast is coming! Hurry up, we're under attack!"
For a while, there was chaos in the camp, and there was chaos in the tents, and people were bumping into the tents, and they couldn't get out of it all at once. On the other side of the camp, the mercenaries on the night vigil let out a series of terrible screams, first in terror and then in desperate wails.
"What's going on?" Geoff finally emerged from the tent, the glow of the orb of light allowing him to see his surroundings clearly, they were surrounded by flesh beasts. "Oh my God, everyone is ready to fight immediately, all of them break through, break through in the direction they came!"
But his order could no longer be fulfilled, and the flesh beasts surged in from all directions, and all but the one in which Fraser could resist for a while, the other three directions quickly collapsed. The mercenaries on the periphery were either nowhere to be seen or all withdrew, all huddled within a few steps of the tent.
"What is this!" a mercenary, already overwhelmed by fear, breathed heavily, his forehead covered with sweat and his hands and feet trembling. "Monsters, die!" he said, and rushed out at the flesh beast.
"Stop Bernard! come back to me!" Geoff shouted behind him, but the mercenary, already overwhelmed by fear, could not hear him. I saw Bernard rush into the flesh beasts, and after swinging a few swords in vain, several flesh beasts crawled on his shoulders and thighs, and blood was dripping everywhere he went. Bernard tore off the flesh beast from his shoulder, along with a large piece of flesh, and then cut the flesh beast on his thigh in half, but then more flesh beasts climbed up his body and bit wildly. The heart-rending screams sent shudders down everyone's shoulders, and Bernard collapsed, drowning in the flesh beast.
"Think of a way, Geoff!" Terrance said incoherently.
Geoff was also shocked by the tragic image in front of him, and was only reacted to by Terrance's yell. "Fire! torch!"
The mercenaries picked up a few still burning fires from the fire and grasped them in their hands, and several flesh beasts that had rushed to them jumped up, bit off the torches in one bite, and then fell to the ground and did not move, but more flesh beasts followed. Geoff picked up a torch and threw it at the nearest flesh beast, which fell to the ground, only causing the flesh beast to hesitate for a moment, and then the army of flesh beasts drowned the torches and continued on their way.
A few seconds after Geoff threw the torch, a flesh beast had already taken advantage of his lack of notice, and a fishy smell rushed to him, although his brain had realized that it was not good, but his movements were still a step slower, and he saw that his neck was about to be bitten through. Too late, but too soon, a bow and arrow struck the flesh with precision, piercing it and pinning it to the ground. "Come up to the trees!" Lyria's voice came from the trees.
Geoff looked up to see Lyria and Barney watching them anxiously from the tree. "Get up the tree, everybody!"
The mercenaries scrambled to climb up the tree, where Lyria shot the flesh beast that was about to catch up with them with a bow and arrow, buying them precious time. Even so, a few of the mercenaries were caught up by the flesh before they could reach the bottom of the tree, and after a few futile struggles, they were pounced.
Geoff climbed up the tree and looked down to see that the place where he had been standing had been taken over by the Flesh Beast, and that there was no place to stay in the entire camp except for a small circle around Fraser. "Fraser, come up!"
Fraser cast walls of fire all around him, and the Flesh tried to cross the wall of fire, but they were all burned to ashes, and he took a look at his surroundings and shouted to Geoff, "There are too many of them, and the trees are not safe." ”
"What do you say? I don't think they can climb trees. Geoff observed the flesh beasts gathered under the tree for a moment, but the next sight made him shut his mouth immediately. I saw the flesh beasts rushing towards the few trees where the mercenaries were hiding, and the flesh beasts in the back climbed on the bodies in front, and then continued to climb upwards in the back, stacking them layer by layer, and in the blink of an eye, they had reached half the height of the trunk.
"Hell, Frazier think of a way!" shouted Geoff.
