Chapter Twenty-Eight: The Surviving Villages
It was late at night, and Fraser sat against the trunk of a tree, his eyes fixed on the burning fire. Everyone else was asleep, and he was in charge of the first vigil. The woods were silent, the crackling of fire came and went, and Fraser's thoughts were in flux.
He thought of his former companions, the Crows' mercenaries and the Gale Force, who had all stepped into the trap before they knew what danger they were about to face. The only difference was that the Gale met him, thus avoiding greater losses, while the Crows were not so lucky, and no one was spared except himself.
Then he thought of Ness, an ignorant mage tower apprentice who had finally realized her worth after countless tribulations. However, in order to save Wallis, Ness sacrificed everything she had, and until now Fraser did not know where Ness was. Fraser suddenly realizes that his somewhat aimless journey is not really to stop Nigel's crime, but to try to find clues about Ness's whereabouts along the way, although all attempts are in vain. Thinking of this, Fraser blinked unconsciously.
Then came the companions who had been born and died together, familiar faces flashing before Fraser's eyes, but now they were scattered, except for Stan, who knew where to find him.
Finally, a beautiful and charming girl drilled into his brain unsuspectingly, and suddenly a heart-rending pain struck him, and Fraser's eyes suddenly fell into a trance, almost to one side, and after trying to stabilize his body against the trunk of the tree, his thoughts became clear again. The girl was on the verge of death, she cried and poured the last of her spiritual power into Fraser's body, and finally she reached out tremblingly and reached out to caress Fraser's cheeks covered with blood and tears, and said the last word, a word that made Fraser not completely depressed until today.
"It's cruel that you left me alone in this world, if only you hadn't said that at the time, we should be together by now. Fraser closed his eyes, remembered the girl's voice and smile a few last times, and then opened his eyes sharply, leaving all distractions behind him, and returning to the grim swordsman.
The cold wind blew through the fire, the flames flickered, and Fraser added a few branches to the fire, and the fire was burning again, and the long night passed slowly.
The next morning, everyone set off, and according to Fraser's judgment, it was very likely that they would catch up with the evil mage today, so the group quickened their pace, and even Barney, who usually talked the most, kept his mouth shut. Fraser hadn't slept much last night, but it was enough for him, and a few days without a fight had almost made him recover.
After a long morning's march, a village appeared on the horizon, and everyone couldn't help but get nervous, the experience of that village had left them with lingering fears. So they set up their formation, with Fraser and Geoff in the front, Solal and Barney in the middle, and Lyria in the last with a bow and arrow, and slowly approached the village.
At a distance from the village, the crowd could already see the outline of the village, and to their surprise there were figures walking around the village, and the houses showed no signs of destruction.
"Didn't the evil mage attack this village?" said Geoff, puzzled.
Solal also said suspiciously, "This village is on their way, and their style of doing things will not be able to let go. ”
"Maybe they also felt the pressure of being pursued by us, and they were afraid that they would lose time here and be caught up by us, so they gave up?" Lyria guessed at the end.
Fraser frowned slightly, but did not speak, but continued to walk forward.
Until they entered the village, the group was not attacked, and the villagers looked at the five people in front of them curiously, obviously there were few outsiders in this place.
Geoff walked towards a villager. "Have you ever seen strange people pass by?"
The villager raised his hand at him. "Aren't you?"
"Hell!" Geoff resisted the urge to hit him. "What about other than us?"
The villager smiled and turned to point to a man in the crowd who was disheveled. "He came here this morning, saying that someone was going to kill him, and that they had killed everyone in his village. ”
Geoff's gaze turned to the man and asked loudly, "Who is going to kill you?"
The man shrugged his shoulders and walked over. "I'm a hunter, I was hunting in the woods this morning, and suddenly a few people who knew magic suddenly appeared with a large group of zombies, and those zombies immediately came at me, and I was so scared that I threw all my things, and finally got rid of them, but fortunately those zombies didn't run fast, and I was very familiar with the woods, so I escaped. ”
Solal looked the man up and down. "We haven't seen any other villages around here except this one, since you're not from here, where did you come from to hunt?"
The man replied disdainfully, "You must have fled to the north after the Darktide War, where many unnamed villages were re-established after the destruction of the Darktide, and some of them were just small settlements where the surviving people gathered together to take care of each other, and I lived in these small settlements. ”
Solal frowned, still a little unconvinced, Geoff didn't care about this, and continued to ask, "Those who can do magic...... They're mages, how many are there? And how many zombies are you talking about?"
"Mage, two, maybe three, I didn't see it clearly, as for the zombies, there seemed to be a dozen, I was only concerned about running for my life at that time, how could I see clearly!" the man shrugged.
Geoff nodded. "Well, we're tracking them, and if you're not mistaken, they're heading south, right?"
The man's eyes widened suddenly. "You're going to chase them, then you must be very capable people, then take me, I'm very familiar with this area, and I know where there are shortcuts. ”
Solal looked up at him. "Didn't you just say that you were so scared that you just ran for your life, but now you dare to chase them?"
The man's expression became serious. "Several of my fellow hunters have been killed by them, I want to avenge them, and besides, of course I don't dare to do it alone, aren't you a few of you with me now? I see that you are by no means ordinary people, and you should have the strength to kill those devils!"
Geoff looked at his companion inquiringly, and with the exception of Solal who was noncommittal, the others had no opinion, and Geoff looked at the man again. "Okay then, but once you hold us back, we're not going to take care of you, understand?"
"Yes, don't worry, it's no accident that I was able to escape from those devils. The man forced a smile.
Fraser, who had not spoken, suddenly asked coldly, "What's your name?"
The man seemed to be frightened by Fraser's voice, as if he had just noticed that there was such a person, and he couldn't help but be stunned for a few seconds before replying, "My name is Colin." ”
Frazier's gaze lingered on Colin for a few seconds, then looked away, not looking at him again.
Geoff looked around at the crowd. "We're going to chase those murderers, we started to rush early in the morning and haven't eaten a drop of water, and we don't have much food with us, and we have to make sure that we have something to eat in the next few days, so can you folks and elders let us have lunch, so that we can have the strength to catch up with those murderers and bring them to justice!"
Geoff's words seemed to be useful, and for a moment, the surrounding crowd rushed to pull everyone to their own house for dinner, and Geoff laughed as he followed a young girl. Lyria shook her head, and had to follow.
