Chapter 111: The Way Home
The group traveled day and night, and embarked on the return journey back to the Mage Tower.
Before leaving, everyone was amazed at Moses' decision. "Shall we not go to the Far North, and the Lord of the Dark has awakened, shall we not do something, but we shall return south to Shavarna, far from the Lord of the Dark?" asked Rui, puzzled.
Moses didn't seem to be in a hurry at all. "What's the use of you going, destroying the Lord of Darkness, what can you do?". "The dark lord has just woken up, and the three seals that trapped him are still there, and he won't be able to escape for a while. β
"But you look at the animals and plants in Sarah, and the rivers. Rui rolled up his sleeve, but luckily there weren't any lumps. "The Dark Lord's pollution has reached the Doyle border, if we don't hurry up and find a way, then ......"
"Don't worry, kid. Moses interrupted him. "One of the important reasons why Sara has changed so much is that it has been conquered by the Dark Tide, and almost no one continues to stay there, but Doyle is different, there is still a whole kingdom of people living there, and the influence of the Dark Lord will not become as severe as Sarah so quickly. I surmise that as long as Doyle can defend against the Dark Tide, the Dark Lord will never pollute it as badly as Sarah. β
Rui pursed his lips. "You're saying that humans themselves can withstand the pollution of the Dark Lord?"
"Yes, but there must be enough humans gathered together, if you think about it, the Lord of the Dark has actually woken up a long time ago, but there was nothing abnormal about the Sara people before, that is because the humans are still living normally in the towns and villages, so they are not polluted by the Lord of the Dark. Moses nodded and continued to explain.
"And what can we do when we go back to the Mage Tower?" Ness, though she also wanted to get back to the Mage Tower as soon as possible, didn't know what instructions would go next.
"I can't give an answer for the time being, but that's the only thing we can do right now, and I'm sure Etiyesh will have some ideas. Moses stroked his beard thoughtfully. "Therefore, we don't need to rush to the north of the North Mirror now, on the contrary, what we need more in the future is to take a long-term view. β
"I don't think it's dangerous to bring the Holy Seal and Wand back to the Mage Tower, so it's better to keep them with us. Fern blurted out.
Moses squinted at him, and the mercenary immediately shut his mouth and walked to the front of the group.
Along the way, the elementals had awakened, excitedly communicating with Ness, thanking her, and the mage's face was constantly filled with laughter, though the others had no idea what she was laughing at.
Over the next few days, the group quickly crossed the northern border of Sarah, and the time it took to return always felt short, though it didn't make much difference.
As he passed by the armory, Fern feared that Ray would tell Moses the secret. The mercenary couldn't make himself fully trust Moses, and in his opinion, all the other mages in the mage tower were not trustworthy except for the three girls who were in the same boat as him, but considering that he was Rui's master, he couldn't remind Rui either. To his reassurance, however, Ray did not mention it to Moses. Could it be that Rui was also wary of Moses, which was not quite the same as her usual attitude towards Moses, and Fern felt that he could not understand Rui even more.
They enter Doyle from the southern border of Sara and then through the Borderlands. The Borderlands is a wasteland devoid of any kingdoms or lieges, and in some places there are even deserts. No one wants to have these barren lands that don't bring them any taxes, but they need to send soldiers to guard them, which is not a good deal. So since the discovery of this wasteland between the northern frontier states and the southern states, it has been called Borderlands.
It took the group six days to cross the borderlands and enter Tempe, and then they gave each of them a horse in the first town they passed, and with their mounts, they marched much faster. Ness picked a chestnut gelding and named it Vernon, she couldn't handle a fierce horse, so the gelding was a perfect fit for her.
So every time Niss calls out to her chestnut horse, Stan unkindly taps the mercenary with his elbow. "You see, she's already trying to learn how to handle you, and it seems to be making rapid progress. β
Fern rolled his eyes, still looking ahead. Finally, after he had misheard several times and turned back to Ness, only to find that the mage was just looking down at his horse, Fern let his horse lean in. "Ness, why did you name it?"
"Don't you like it, Fern?" Ness's big eyes blinked smartly. "I think when I go back to the Mage Tower, I will always think of you whenever I see it. β
Fern didn't speak, not knowing whether he was happy or bitter, and just kept riding beside Ness.
Instead of making a detour to Tempe's capital, Deluth, the group went straight south through Tempe.
Derluth was the hometown of Quiai, and Fern had asked her if she wanted to go back when she first entered Tempe, but Moses vetoed her, and the old mage had suffered a lot from the journey, and he did not want to take any more unnecessary paths. But Quiai didn't want to go back, and the suitors there upset her like a swarm of flies. "If you can go back with me and declare to them that you're my fiancΓ©, I can consider it. That's what she said to Fern, and the mercenary never spoke of it again. And Ness didn't seem to care about Quiai's words for long, her thoughts had already drifted to the Mage Tower, faster than anyone else.
The further south they went, the hotter it became, and when they first arrived in Tempe, snow could still be seen on the roadside and on the rooftops of the village, but as they walked halfway through Tempe, the snow was melting as long as there was sunlight, and when they were finally about to enter Roanoke, there was no snow on the side of the road. Tempe is a large country, bigger than any other kingdom in Vallis, and it is rumored that three seasons can be seen in Tempe at the same time. If you include the Black Swamp, it's barely three seasons, Fern thought. Rumors will always be more exaggerated than facts.
Roanoke's climate is arguably the most pleasant of all the kingdoms of Wallis, and the phrase warm in winter and cool in summer is simply custom-made for it. The group decided to rest for two days in its capital, St. Sean, because St. Sean was on their way to Chavanna, and because it was already very close from St. Sean to Chavanna, and among all of them, except for Quiai, who was quite neat, the others were almost unrecognizable, and the mages were not willing to return to the Mage Tower just like that. While in Tempe, Fern often stroked his beard in the same way as Moses, even though his beard resembled that of a newly developed goatee. Stan didn't do this because of knightly rules, but Fern knew he was itching too. Ness and Rui had been covering their faces with their cloaks for fear of being seen with their dirty faces, and they were curious about how Quiai kept her tidy, as she seemed to have washed her face every morning when she woke up, though no one saw any trace of the water.
There was another reason, the idea of the three girls, Saint-Sean had the most beautiful clothes and jewelry on the entire continent, and it was impossible for a woman to resist. The three mages are at an age when they love beauty, even more so.
While he was still a long way from San Sean, Fern noticed that there were more convoys around, all of which were destined for the same destination. Along the way, some of the ladies in the carriage would lift the curtains and sneak into Fern and Stan, reluctant to lower the curtains long after the carriage had passed. To the Roanokes, Fern and Stan are definitely tall and muscular. Men in this landlocked country generally reach only two people's shoulders, and women may only reach their chests.
At one point, a handkerchief even floated out of the curtains, and then the carriage stopped on the side of the road, from which came down two rich ladies with elaborate haircuts and long silk dresses with intricate lace. Holding the hem of their long skirts in both hands, they tried to maintain a dignified demeanor, and slowly walked towards the two people on the horses, and the two permed curls in their ears kept shaking.
"Will the two gentlemen pick up this handkerchief for us?, ah, of course, we'll tell you the name, and if you pick it up, we'll even have dinner together." One of the brown-haired, dark-yellow-eyed girls winked at them as she spoke.
Fern ignores them, but for Stan, even if they are deliberately flirting with him, he has to pick up the handkerchief and give it back to them solemnly. As Stan stood up straight and handed the handkerchief over, another girl took the opportunity to take the handkerchief and gently squeezed the knight's palm, then winked at him. "I'm Nalissa, what's your name, Mr. Knight?"
Stan quickly turned to get on his horse, and together with Fern, before the two rich ladies could react, they urged the horses to run a long way.
On the other hand, few men would harass the three girls, at most they would sneak a glance at Queai when Fern and Stan weren't noticing, after all, few people thought they could beat the two tall warriors. As for Ness and Rey, the only thing with their cloaks on them is probably the hand holding the reins.
At dusk, the white walls of St. Sean appear in front of everyone, and several watchtowers stand on the walls, each with a blue gilded flag, and in the center of the flag, a majestic stag is printed.
Stan, who had never been to St. Seian, was so shocked by the majestic sight that he forgot to continue driving his mount.
Fern patted the knight on the back. "Let's go, this experience of traveling through the southern countries will definitely make you feel even more about the fact that the world is unfair. β
