Chapter Ninety-Nine: The End
The next day, the group left the warm cave and set out on the mountain road again. The snow was still falling, but fortunately it was not dense, and scattered snowflakes fell on everyone's body. Reluctantly, Ness glanced back at the cave where there was still warmth, and wrapped her cloak tightly.
Everyone had a good night's rest, and Ness had treated Fern last night, and after enduring a long period of pain, the mercenary even felt like he had been given a new lease of life. But despite the almost complete recovery, everyone's mood is not easy, especially after speculating that the forces behind the whole thing are in control of their direction.
Ferne's mood has been unstable since last night. "I was thinking, if we give up now and turn around and go back, will someone really stand in our way and force us to keep going? β
"I agree with Ferne, we can give it a try. Stan responds loudly at the end of the group.
"Don't be stupid, no one will show up, he knows you're just tempting, because he knows we don't have a choice. Rui was dismissive of the two men's stupid ideas.
"Do we really have no choice? even if we give up, if the other party really needs these three holy seals, he will definitely find a way to continue this matter. Fern looked back at Rui with a serious look in his eyes, as if he would really take his companion back immediately.
"Since he has chosen Ness, it means that only Ness can collect these three seals, and it is up to us to complete this task. Rui looked back at the mercenary sharply.
"That's just the right thing to do to prove my idea, and we're going to turn around now and force him to show up. Fern said and began to walk back.
As he passed by Rui's side, the mage reached out to stop him. "What are you going to do if he shows up? You know that we have to move on to complete this mission, do you want to fight him, get yourself and Stan a little more injured, let Ness and I lose some mental energy, and drag our tired bodies to meet the dangers that lie ahead?"
Fern was choked by Rui's words for a while, and his face was almost red, and he was still unwilling in the end. At the very least, we can know who the other person is, and then we can make him suffer a little and dispel a little stuffiness in our hearts. β
"Man, are they all as naΓ―ve as you, don't let the impulses get you carried away, or I'll calm you down. Rui's eyes flashed with ferocity.
"I really should have left you in the source of magic!" Fern cursed angrily, turned and walked to the front of the line again, starting again.
After crossing another hill along the mountain road, in the col ahead, a camp built on a wide flat ground came into view. There were more than twenty tents erected in the camp, each made of white burlap with red stripes, and at the top of the tent hung a long red rope, the other end of which was connected to the nearest tent. The tent was small, and it seemed like it could only fit two people at most, and if it were a tall man like Fern and Stan, it would almost only sleep one. The whole camp was lifeless, there was not a single living person in sight, and all the tents seemed to have been abandoned, covered with snow and dust, and some had even fallen to half of them, and would have completely collapsed if it were not for the pull of the long rope at the top. Farther into the camp, on the rock wall at the end of the level, a wide hole two people tall enough to walk four people side by side heralded the end of the group.
"It's finally here. Fern paused, surveying the camp and the cave. "But we had to pass through the tents first, and the road was completely blocked by them. β
Rui scrutinized the camp not far away, uneasily creeping up her brow. "This is the tent of the Sara people, and the blizzard that Sara said was coming made the Sara people invent this way of attaching all the tents with a long rope to prevent the tents from being blown away by the blizzard, and the red rope is very eye-catching, and when the storm passes, people can also follow the rope to find their companions. β
"It's a good invention, but it looks a little weird right now. Fern touched his beard, which was long enough to stop stinging.
Ness stared intently at the location of each tent and the red rope that connected them, her face revealing shock. "The location of these tents is not arbitrary, their location, and each red rope that connects them, forms a magic circle. β
After being reminded by Ness, Rui also took a closer look at the camp again. "When you say that, it seems to be true, but I don't recognize this circle, I've never seen a circle in this position. β
"I haven't seen it either, but Hessey told me about it in the Tower. Ness propped her chin on, trying to recall Hussey's description. He said that when he was studying evil magic, he had occasionally seen a magic circle consisting of four hexagonal nests ranging from largest to smallest, with each of the two adjacent endpoints connected by some kind of connector, so that anything on the six endpoints would ...... For example, dead corpses will share power. β
"That is, to kill them, you can only kill all six corpses at the same time, if they can be killed at all. Stan's emotions get a little stirred.
"That's right, it's hard to kill a dead body resurrected by evil magic, and it's even more difficult to kill six connected corpses at the same time. Ness bowed her head in thought.
"Why didn't Hesey tell you about the other circles, but only this one, and it was even more coincidental that we actually came across this circle. Rui pointed out the problem to the point.
Ness bit her lip in embarrassment. "This ...... I don't know, maybe it's really a coincidence?"
"There are so many coincidences, he must have known that Adeline had learned this magic circle, so it is very likely that we will encounter it, so he told you in advance. Fern explained Ray's problem. "In this way, Hesey had long suspected that the evil mage in Wolf Castle was Adeline, but he didn't tell us. β
"Well, it looks like you're saying that, Fern. Ness stopped resisting and accepted Fern's reasoning.
"Did Hussey tell you how to crack the circle?" said Rui, turning her head to look at Niss.
"Yes, he mentioned it. Ness looked at Rui and nodded. "The best thing to do is to cut the rope that connects them and break them individually. β
"There are six tents on each level, four in total, and you're saying we're going to cut twenty-four long ropes and then deal with twenty-four dead bodies?" Fern's eyes widened, apparently the mercenary didn't think this was a viable option. "It would be nice if we had twenty-four of us, but there were only four of us. β
"Hell, I thought there were only twenty ropes. Stan counted his hand again.
"There's another method, it's actually harder than the previous one, but it's suitable for a squad like ours. Ness looked at Fern and bit her lip before she spoke. "Among the six tents in the innermost layer, one is the eye of the array, and it is also the weakness of the entire circle, as long as you find that tent and kill the dead corpses inside, the whole circle will be useless. β
"Sounds like a try, and we still have this. Rui patted the metal bottle hanging from his belt. "Holy water destroys all filth. The mage remembered the spell he had seen in Asgard.
"It doesn't seem like we're out of the blue. Stan gives up trying to count the ropes and clasps his hands together.
Fern nodded. "So, are we going down now? Are you sure there must be dead bodies in the tent? Maybe the circle has been abandoned. Fern also crossed his hands on his chest, not very afraid, they had already received the dead on the White River and the Sadowa Bridge, and they were somewhat mentally prepared.
"Of course, we have to go down whether there are dead bodies in the tent or not. Rui took the bottle of holy water from his belt, unscrewed the lid and shook it to make sure that the blue liquid inside was not frozen.
Fern only sighed softly, and then walked slowly towards the col, his left hand tightly gripping the scabbard at his waist.
