Chapter 4: Attacked

With his mount in hand, Fern was moving much faster than before, and in a few days he was already in Roanoke's territory, and even the kingdom, which was usually known for its leisure, was now dead. Although a few pedestrians could still be seen on the road, the old tradition of greeting each other was gone, and every time Fern crossed up with a passerby, the other party would stare at him vigilantly until the other person turned back after a long distance had passed.

However, compared to Tempe, at least there are still villages here from time to time, and supplies along the way are not a problem, so Fern has nothing to complain about.

After setting foot on Roanoke's land, Fern chose to turn southeast so that he would not pass through Roanoke's capital, San Sean, but would go straight to the Pilatus Mountains, and from there he would enter Alesia's territory. The route is much quieter than the road to Saint-Sean, and the cold weather makes it even less crowded with pedestrians. The journey was smooth, but a strange feeling haunted Fern not long after he entered Roanoke, and he couldn't tell what it was for a while, as if there was a restlessness in his heart that had been forcibly suppressed.

The feeling was even stronger every night when he spent the night in the village beside the road, as if someone was watching him from a short distance, but Fern was not frightened at all, but a warmth welled up in his heart. The village here is not threatened by the dark tide, and it is still warm inside, except for the cold wind howling outside. In the past few days, it was as if Fern had returned to his life as a mercenary who had traveled to and from various parts of Wallis to complete various commissions, but he knew that all this was only temporary, and he was about to face difficult challenges, as were his companions, and everyone in Wallis.

One afternoon, Fern walked unhurriedly along the path, which was lined with scattered woods, and the cold wind gave him a headache. After kneading his temples for a moment, Fern looked up again, only to see that something seemed wrong. He blinked, trying to make himself more conscious, but there was nothing in front of him, a crooked path leading straight ahead. His intuition told him that there must be something unusual around him, and his left hand subconsciously grasped the scabbard, and his right hand grasped the reins and slowly led the horse forward, and the wind and grass around him could not escape his eyes.

Suddenly, a strong sense of oppression came from behind, and Fern turned his head sharply, and saw a fanged horse standing twenty yards from him, and the knight on horseback was tightly wrapped in a cloak, and his face was completely visible. Fern clearly understood what it was that could have such a sense of oppression, and his heart suddenly contracted, and his hands and feet lost strength. But Fern is no longer the mercenary he was at the beginning, and now he has experienced many dangers and tests, and has grown like never before, even the demon is no longer fatal to him.

The blood flowed smoothly to the ends of his hands and feet again, and Fern's whole body stretched out, and he was free to move again. Immediately after that, the same demon knights appeared in front of them, and two more demon knights on each side of the road slowly approached the path, and Fern was surrounded by four demons. But he didn't panic, but quickly observed the situation around him.

Seeing that the encirclement was getting smaller and smaller, the demon's hollow eyes peeked out of the hood. Suddenly, Fern slapped his mount's buttocks so hard that the horse, frightened, raised its front legs and ran forward quickly, while the sword was unsheathed and pointed at the demon in front of him. The demon obviously didn't expect Fern to be able to move so quickly, and he fell off his horse without hurrying. Fern slashed down the knightless horse with a sword, quickly breaking through the encirclement of the demons, and just as he was about to gallop his horse, a fireball slammed into the ground in front of him from the side, and a strong shock wave lifted Fern off the horse's back, and he fell to the ground with the neighing of the horse.

Fern rolled to the side on the ground a few times, dodging the second fireball, and then he immediately jumped up, the third fireball was already close in front of him, fortunately the sword in the stone was still in his hand, Fern raised the sword with both hands and slashed downward, splitting the fireball in two, and whistling past both sides. The magic attack stopped for a moment, but the demons gathered around again, and behind the four demons, two demon mages walked out of the woods, and the fireball was their masterpiece. Judging from the formation, Fern has no chance of escaping.

"How did you end up in Roanoke?" Fern wanted to stall for a moment and find any chance of escape.

The demon who took the lead laughed hoarsely. "It's not just Roanoke, there are demons infiltrating every kingdom, you and your companions are our targets, you have caused a lot of trouble to your master, and we can't let you go any longer. ”

"Lord Dark, he is so powerful, even the Great Sage is not his opponent at all, is he still afraid of us mortals?" Fern was very calm on the surface, but he was very tormented inside, he found that in front of the six demons, he had no way out, even if he was no longer afraid of the demons' special abilities, but he had no chance of winning in a one-on-six battle.

"Because your little tricks have tired the master. The demon slowly walked forward, a hoarse voice coming from his throat. "Anyway, sooner or later the whole of Wallis will fall into the abyss, and you will be more miserable then, and it is more painful to die at my hands now. ”

Fern tightened his grip on the sword in the stone, set up his stance, and was ready to fight until the last moment, even if he had no chance of winning. The demon got closer and closer, only a few steps away, and the eerie laughter rang out again.

At this moment, the strange feeling suddenly poured out like a fountain, and Ferne's heart was hot, and his whole body was filled with strength, and at the same time, a familiar and unfamiliar voice suddenly appeared in his brain. "Jump to the left, get out of the way!"

Without hesitation, Fern kicked hard with his right foot and jumped away to the left, almost at the same time, a gust of wind swept across where Fern had just stood. The demon raised his hand to block, and an arrow pierced his arm. The demon angrily pulled out the arrow, breaking it in two, and in an instant his hands erupted violently, and with the demon's creepy scream, his hands were blown away, and a large hole was blown out in his chest.

"That arrow has been cast with an enchantment, stand back!" the demon mage rushed forward, quickly chanting a spell to cast a shield.

"Break that shield, use your sword!" was the voice again, and Fern raised his sword and rushed towards the demon mage, two fireballs roaring towards him, Fern deftly dodged one of them, swung his sword to split the second, and in the blink of an eye he was in front of the enemy. The sword in the stone slashed hard against the shield, shaking Fern's hand numb, and the shield shattered with a crisp click.

Before the fragments of the shield could land, the second arrow had already arrived, and the demon mage didn't have time to cast a spell to block it, and the arrow pierced into his chest, followed by the third and fourth arrows into his body with precision.

"Stand back!" Fern flashed the warning in his mind, and immediately retreated several steps in quick succession, before a flaming rocket struck the demon mage's forehead, and the flames on the rocket suddenly spread throughout the demon's body, causing a series of explosions that shattered him. The other demons around the demon mage were not spared, and they were all blown away, and even Fern, who had retreated more than ten yards, was swept away by the strong qi wave.

Fern struggled to his feet from the ground, looked at the burning demon, and could faintly see several shadows swaying in the flames, and the familiar sound came into his head again. "Ride your horse into the woods, and stay in until you see me. ”

Fern looked around and saw that his horse was already on its way to the woods, so he ran at once, and turned on his horse as he drove it toward the woods. The shouts of the demons behind them sounded again, and the explosion just now did not solve all the demons, they found Fern, who was fleeing, and shouted and chased after them. Fern bent down, clinged to his horse, and rode into the woods in a puff of smoke. The demons then arrived, but they didn't have to go far to find that the horses' hoof prints were missing, and they lost their purpose.

The trees swept by quickly, and the mere exhaustion of dodging the low branches, coupled with the impact of the shock just now, Fern was almost unable to hold on, and he had to stop the horse and continue to walk deeper into the woods at his usual pace. Fortunately, there was no sound of the demon tracking behind him, which made Fern feel relieved and puzzled at the same time, and the horse's hoof prints left along the way allowed the demon to easily track him.

Familiarity came back from the front, leading Fern onwards, silence except for the occasional birdsong. The feeling became clearer as he calmed down, making Fern both expectant and nervous, he had guessed who was waiting for him in front of him, but he couldn't believe it.

Finally, a familiar figure appeared in a small clearing. From behind, it was a girl, her long brown hair tied into a ponytail hanging down her head, her tight leather coat lining her slender waist, a short bow hanging from her back, and the scent of rose petals wafting faintly. Fern felt his heart beat out, the figure that had haunted him countless times in his dreams but was out of reach, and now, she was in front of him, within reach.
