Chapter Ninety-Two: Escape from the Forest
The group walked in the forest for a whole night, without stopping to rest even once, even though they were extremely tired, everyone still fought hard and continued to walk forward.
Quinton and Vlad took turns leading the way, and finding the way in the dark required a lot of energy, and by this time they were already exhausted, and almost every half hour, they had to change positions to get a short break so that they could continue to concentrate.
The demon behind him didn't catch up again, and he didn't encounter any danger along the way, which made everyone finally breathe a sigh of relief, at least Quinton and Vlad led the right way. After some discussion, they decided to bypass the last camp, believing that it must have been taken over by the demons, and that it would be tantamount to falling into a trap if they went there any longer.
Not long after Quinton told them they had bypassed the camp, it was finally starting to lighten. Everyone felt a sense of relief when the first rays of light shone into the dark forest, and although the light did not fully illuminate the surroundings in the foggy and dark forest, even if it was only a very brief feeling, it made everyone feel as if they had been reborn.
Stan takes the food out of the package and distributes it to the group, and everyone rides on their mounts and eats the hard, cold food for breakfast as fast as they can. Quinton and Vlad boiled a pot of hot water as fast as they could in the roadside woods, so that everyone could sip hot tea to quench their thirst and cold, and they hadn't been dripping for a night. Ness didn't dare to use magic to melt the water bladders that had turned into ice cubes, which would be much faster than the soldiers would burn the ice, but the mages suspected that magic would attract the demons of the forest, who might have the ability to sense nearby magic.
After simply filling their stomachs, the group hit the road again. According to Quinton's estimates, the camp that had just been bypassed was about half a day's journey to the western border of the Twilight Forest, so that people could set out from the camp where they were ambushed early that morning, and walk out of the forest on the same night, and after leaving the forest, it would be much safer, even if they walked on the plains at night, there would be no danger, and if they walked quickly, they could reach Valdosta in the middle of the night. And now for Stan, they had already set off in the middle of the night the previous day, and now it was only early in the morning, and they were only half a day's journey away from the border, and if it went well, they could reach Valdosta in the dark.
Quinton and Vlad had been on the road all night, and the fatigue had made them forget the pain of losing their comrades for a while, and the two of them had no distractions at the moment, and their only goal was to get everyone out of the forest smoothly. The three mages followed silently, and Rui and Nerfi were no longer at odds with each other, but they sat weakly on horseback, letting their mounts rock them around. Stan followed at the back of the group, never letting his guard down, and the knight knew that the responsibility on his shoulders was great, and he had to bring his companions safely to Valdosta, and the knight's unusually strong willpower came into play at this point, sustaining him until now.
The dense fog in the forest seemed to be forever endless, and every tree looked exactly the same, Stan wondered how the Altoina had managed to find their way through the barely distinguishing trees, the bumps of his mount and the overnight drive had made him drowsy, and he almost lost consciousness a few times, but immediately came back to his senses.
The two soldiers who led the way were no better, although they could rotate with each other, but it still couldn't change their increasingly sluggish spirit, and the interval between the two rotations became shorter and shorter.
Rui duly stopped the two leading the way and told them to dismount, and the mage walked up to them, and hovered his hands on either side of their temples to restore some of their energy, and the Altoona looked at each other in surprise, and a look of wonder leaped on their faces.
Ray walks slowly towards Stan, and can tell that she is tired too. "Do you want me to ask you to get off the horse?"
"No, Rui, I don't need to, you're tired too. Stan waved his hand, rejecting the mage's offer.
Nerfi sat on his horse and yawned, staring blankly at the knight. "You are the one who broke off, and Rui is doing this to protect everyone, and for everyone's sake, you should also accept Rui's recovery. ”
Stan is told by Nerfi and bows his head and flips off his horse. "I'm sorry, Rui, just a little. ”
Rui snorted softly. "Neverfi still works, and she seems to be the only one who can handle you, Stan. ”
The knight blushed, and he glanced quietly at Nerfi, only to see that she had heard Rui's words too, and turned her head away from looking this way.
"Won't your magic attract the attention of the demons?" Quinton was already back on the horse, ready to move on. "It's so effective that I feel like I've been asleep for hours, but didn't Ness just say that magic might attract demons?"
"The mana of the spirit recovery magic is very weak, if this kind of magic needs to be cast with the same mana as fire magic, it will take several times or even dozens of times, so it will not spread to a large range, and we really can't continue to move forward, in order to ensure that your brains can still work normally, and not take us to the territory of the fog monsters, I think it is worth it." Rui lowered his hands from the sides of Stan's head, exhaled hard, and staggered back to his mount, pulling and pulling onto the horse.
The group began to march again, and the speed of the Altoona pathfinding was noticeably faster, and the rotation time returned to half an hour, and the speed of the group was much faster than before. Finally, after walking for an unknown number of hours in the untouched forest, the front began to gradually light up, the arrangement of the trees became more and more sparse, and the thick fog gradually dissipated, and everyone could find the right way on their own without continuing to follow the two soldiers. However, in order to be sure, Stan decides to continue following the soldiers and letting them continue to lead the way.
Stan has no concept of time, he doesn't know if it's noon or mid-afternoon, he tries to ask the three mages, but Ray and Ness don't know, Nerfi seems to think a little, but still gives a negative answer.
But this was no longer important, for not long after the knight had asked, all of them saw a bright exit ahead, and the light shone in without reservation, and they almost trotted out of the forest with their mounts, and before them appeared a vast plain, covered with white.
Everyone cheered softly, still afraid to make too much noise for fear of a demon nearby, but that didn't affect the joy they felt in their hearts. The Altoona soldier jumped off his horse and rolled in the snow, as if to drain all his strength. The three mages also dismounted, embracing each other and saying words of blessing. Stan seems to release all the pressure at once, even though he knows it's too early to say victory. The knight stepped off his horse relaxed, and stood in the snow looking at the endless white plains in front of him, and hope was rekindled in his heart.
Then everyone stood straight in the direction of the forest behind them, bowing their heads in silence for the two Altuna soldiers who had died. Garin and Scotti change Stan's image of the Altoona soldiers, who previously thought that the Altoonas were almost vulnerable compared to the Doyle soldiers, but now he understands that they are no worse than anyone else, and that they are the best warriors of Wallis.
After a short rest, the group continued to march westward. The rest of the journey went very smoothly, the weather was surprisingly good, there was not a single cloud in the clear blue sky, and although the sun was weak, it was satisfying for everyone who had not seen the sun for several days. Although the wind from Blackridge was still cold, and the snow was so deep that it almost sunk half of the horses' legs into the snow, it was nothing compared to what happened in the twilight forest.
As the last rays of the sun faded over the horizon, the group finally saw the silhouette of the city in the distance ahead with the help of the deep blue of the horizon. Valdosta, finally in their eyes. Quinton and Vlad sped up, urging their mounts to trot toward the town, and the three mages glanced at each other, unable to hide the smiles on their faces, and followed.
Stan's frown finally relaxed, and before, he even felt that his face would never relax again, but now, the knight knew that he could finally let go of the whole world that was pressing on his shoulders, and he needed to rest, take a good rest. The corners of Stan's mouth turned upwards, and he grabbed his mount between his legs, and hurried towards the town, shouting at his companions who were leaving him behind, "You guys, wait for me!"
Ahead, the laughter of the girls echoed across the empty plains.
