Chapter 39: The Chase
Fern and Jalena hurried on their way to the edge of the Black Swamp while there was still a glimmer of light in the sky, but Fern knew that it was still a little more than a day's way from Wet Harbor, so it was impossible to spend the night in the village anyway. And now that night is approaching, they are most likely to be attacked by the Flesh Beasts again in the Black Swamp, and without the unfortunate Tempe soldiers to attract the attention of the Flesh Beasts, they will not have such good luck escaping every time.
Jasmina worriedly observed the puddles and overgrown trees all around, and the unusual weather didn't seem to affect her at all. "Fern, we need to find a way to get rid of those mages as soon as possible, or we'll be attacked by flesh beasts tonight. ”
"I know. Fern rode ahead of the mage and didn't seem to be in a hurry. "Wait. ”
"What are you waiting for? It's getting dark, and the swamp is almost gone, and we might be stuck in these puddles without their hands. Jasmine was visibly anxious, and she rode up to Fern's side, urging him constantly.
Fern kept looking at his surroundings. "It's the same for everyone, we can't see clearly, and neither can the mages, but I've been to the Black Swamp several times, and I'm much more familiar with the terrain than they are. ”
"What's the use of that? as soon as it gets dark, they're going to attack. Jamina subconsciously touched the wand on her waist, ready for a battle.
"It won't be long, trust me, Molina. Fern took the reins of the clouds and stopped where he was. "Ahead is where we get rid of them, and wait until it's completely dark. ”
"Where?" Jasmine looked at the two of them in confusion, only to see that the low trees were unevenly distributed everywhere, dotted with countless puddles, and in the puddles grew a mess of water weeds, almost covering the puddles, if Fern hadn't told her that there were a few places that looked like grass but were actually puddles, she would never have been able to tell the difference.
"The night before, I had observed the monsters, they were moving on the ground with their chassis, they had no hands or feet, so once they got into these puddles, I am sure they would not be able to get out. Fern looked up and looked through the branches to the sky.
"But it's still too risky, what if we step into it ourselves, or if the flesh doesn't fall in?"
Fern raised his right hand and gestured to his waist. "These puddles are only as deep as our horses at most, and we have hands and feet, and even if we fall into them, we can swim out, let alone the horses, and I bet they must be better swimmers than you. ”
"I'm ......," Jamina said again. "I can't swim ......"
"What?" Fern looked at the archmage in surprise. "It's going to be a bit of a hassle like that, and we have to make sure we don't step into it, hell, I didn't think of that. ”
Jasmine looked behind her worriedly. "If you haven't thought it through, is that our situation dangerous?"
"It's not a big problem, I'm still a little sure that I won't take the wrong way, but you must follow me, remember, you must follow the route of the dark clouds, and don't deviate. Although Fern said that it was not a big problem, he shook his head and revealed what he really thought.
"Don't lie to me, I'm not Ness, you obviously don't have confidence like this. Jasmine had already seen the uneasiness in Fern's heart.
Fern looked at the sky again, the last bits of dark blue on the horizon were gone, the stars were disappearing behind the rapidly passing clouds, and the trees in front of them were flickering and darkening. They were filled with the chirping of frogs and insects, and the damp scent of the evening breeze blew across their faces.
"Ready, Molina. Fern commanded in a low voice, pulling the reins tight.
Morena knew it was too late to say anything, so she had to give it a go. "May the god of magic bless us and let miracles happen. ”
"No miracle needed, just now!" Fern said quickly, and with a clamp between his legs, the clouds lifted their front legs and immediately rushed out. "Keep up, Molina!"
Not daring to slack off, Jasmine hurried her mount to follow, keeping a distance of about ten yards between the two, and the archmage stared at the back of Fern in front of him, leading his mount along the path of the clouds. Sometimes, Fern would ride forward for a long distance, sometimes changing directions from side to side, and occasionally, the mercenary would stop briefly and continue on after a few seconds. Morena had no idea how Fern was able to navigate and avoid puddles ahead, all she could do was follow Fern as closely as she could, and remember the path that the clouds had trodden on, and she didn't dare to think about it or have the leisure to think about it.
The moon and stars flickered behind the clouds, and the ground was light and dark, but Fern didn't slow down, leading Morena through the trees. It was only when she rode at the edge of the puddle that Morena could see how close they were, and each time, she had just seen the weeds reaching the belly of the horses, but Fern had led her to the safety of the meadow. As Jasmine followed Fern, she couldn't help but admire that he could safely walk through here at such a fast speed in such a dim light, and the archmage knew in her heart that if Fern hadn't led the way, she would have been planted in the water with men and horses.
Suddenly there were several men's shouts behind him, followed by the creepy friction between the two. "Here they are, Fern!"
"Don't be distracted, follow me!" Fern didn't look back, he didn't dare to distract himself, a mistake would have caused them to fall into the water, and Jarena couldn't swim, which would be fatal for them.
The two of them walked quickly through the trees and puddles, chasing after the sound of rubbing behind them, and at the same time there was a constant sound of falling water, mixed with the sudden rising chirping of frogs. Sweat slid down Fern's head, wetting his eyes, and he was exhausted from a long day's journey, and he was overwhelmed by the high concentration required to travel quickly through this complex terrain. Fern gradually felt his eyes begin to blur, and he wiped the sweat from his eyes with his sleeve, and the scene in front of him became a little clearer, but soon, everything was blurry again. No, Fern, hold on, you should be able to hold on longer.
The shouts behind him grew farther and farther away, and Fern believed that they had almost left the mages behind, and that it was almost impossible for a mage who didn't have much experience in surviving in the wilderness to travel at the same speed as he did. But what he was worried about was the flesh beasts, those monsters were not afraid to fall into the water, they had only one purpose, which was to catch them up and swallow them in their stomachs.
The two of them continued to run so far that Fern wondered if they were about to reach Wet Harbor, though he knew it was just his delusion, and it would take at least a full day to get from the western edge of the Black Swamp to Wet Harbor. To his surprise, unlike what Morena said before, the flesh beasts would not run out of a large area, and the friction sound still followed them closely, although compared to the beginning, the friction sound was much sparser, and Fern guessed that most of the flesh beasts had fallen into the puddle and could not get out again, they just needed to hurry a little further and introduce the remaining flesh beasts into the puddle. Thinking of this, Fern cheered up, a dark cloud had just drifted by, the obscured moon had once again sprinkled its light on the earth, and the woods in front of him were clear again. Well, that's it, Fern sees hope for a safe escape.
At this moment, there was a loud sound of falling water behind the mercenary, the sound was very close to him, and the sound of water was definitely not something that the flesh beast could make. "Molena!" Fern reined in the clouds, turned his horse's head, and saw a violent splash in a puddle twenty yards behind him.
