Chapter 64: The Blizzard
Fern and Ness had a casual bite to eat on the leeward side of a small dirt slope, and after filling their stomachs, they continued their journey north. The weather gets colder and colder, but thanks to the coat that Stan has found for them, the two of them don't freeze. And after so many days of trekking in the wild, Fern and Ness have become more or less accustomed to the cold weather in the north.
In the afternoon, the weather was still gloomy, and the two men were walking on a barren snowy field, and the surrounding scenery did not change except for the mound that kept passing by them.
Ness was numbly following Ferne's footprints when suddenly a high-pitched woman's voice rushed into her head, as if someone was whispering in her ear, and as if it had entered her consciousness directly. Ness was surprised to find that although she couldn't understand the language spoken, she could understand the meaning. "Blizzard, blizzard is coming! You are walking towards danger, and the blizzard will devour you!"
Ness jerked her head up and looked around, but there was no one but Fern, not even an animal. Again, the same feeling as the last time at the Doyle border, what the hell is this? Ness stood blankly and didn't move forward.
Fern sensed the mage's strange behavior and turned back. "What's the matter, Ness, what's the problem?"
Ness came back to her senses and looked at the mercenary at a loss. "I heard strange voices again, warning me that a blizzard was coming. ”
"Blizzard?" Fern looked up at the sky in confusion. "I'm not familiar with the weather in the north, so if it's a snowstorm, we'd better be prepared. ”
"Is a blizzard so powerful? can't we hold it up if we wrap our cloaks tightly?"
Although Ness's words sounded funny, Fern didn't have the heart to laugh at the moment. "I have been to Doyle twice, and on one occasion there was a blizzard, and my companions and I were lucky enough to find a hunter's hut, and we hid for two days, and the blizzard raged for two days, and finally when we were finally able to go out, we found that the door could not be opened, and the whole house was buried in snow. ”
Ness's eyes widened in disbelief. "In that case, unless we can find a place to hide, we'll be buried alive?"
"Yes, but there doesn't seem to be a blizzard yet. Fern shook his head. "Let's go forward a little longer, and now even if we stop here, we can't find any place to hide. ”
Ness nodded, followed Fern, and continued her walk north.
The two of them walked for a short time, and just after turning the foot of a mountain, the sky, which had been only gloomy, suddenly began to become black and oppressive, and the cold wind suddenly blew violently, and even blew up the snow on the ground.
Fern looked at the sky worriedly. "Hell, it looks like you're right, a blizzard is coming, and we're going to have to find a place to hide right away. ”
"But there's nothing but snow and hills. Ness looked at Fern helplessly, her tone full of anxiety.
"I'm afraid you're right. Fern began to get anxious, the cold wind was getting stronger, and it seemed that the blizzard would come soon, and if they could not find a place to hide, the consequences would be dire.
Fear crept over Ness, and she couldn't imagine herself being covered in a thick layer of snow. "If I cast a spell to form a magic shield, will it protect us?"
Fern shook his head as he continued to look around. "It's okay for a short time, but no one knows how long the snowstorm will last, let alone two days, even if it's half a day, you can't hold on. ”
Ness pursed her lips in frustration and looked at Fern at a loss. "Then what are we going to do? How can we find a house in this wilderness? ”
Fern suddenly thought of something, and pointed to the tallest mound in the distance. "Let's go there, quick, once the blizzard comes, we can't last long in the snow. With that, the mercenary quickly ran towards the mound.
Ness immediately followed Fern, the snow on the ground already reaching her vamp, leaving deep footprints with every step she took. The finest goat hair boots are very good at protecting against the cold, and even if the entire upper is stuck in the snow, the foot still doesn't feel cold. Ness had enjoyed it at first, but now, she didn't think about it anymore.
The mound didn't seem very tall from a distance, and it was only the largest as far as the eye could see, but as Fern and Ness got closer to it, they realized that it was actually a hill. Fern estimated that it was between fifty and sixty yards high and at least a hundred yards wide, and it would take a lot of effort to walk around it.
Ness panted and caught up with Fern, and the mercenary was observing around the mound, when the sky was already snowing, and the strong wind blew the snowflakes on the faces of the two of them. "Fern, what are you doing? It's already snowing!"
"There must be caves on a hill of this size, if not covered in snow, if we can find them......" Fern said no more, the snowflakes blew into his mouth, and the mercenary spat out, anxious that all he had in mind was the cave.
Ness also hurriedly searched for it with Fern, and the snow was getting heavier and heavier, and the goose feather snow quickly covered the cloaks of the two in the wind. Ness was even more frightened, if she couldn't find a cave to hide in, she felt her nose sour again in the endless wasteland.
Fern had run to the other side of the mound, and Ness staggered after her, shaking the snow off her body, the snowflakes from her hood falling on her already frozen red nose. The bitter cold, combined with the blizzard that had arrived, made Ness feel a hint of despair.
The blizzard was so dense that as soon as Nith ran to the back of the mound, she could only vaguely see the back of the mercenary in front of her, and if the distance between the two was a little longer, she would not be able to see each other at all. Thinking of this, a wave of fear welled up in Ness's heart, and she immediately followed.
Through the howling wind and heavy snow, Ness saw Fern pick up the scabbard and start digging in the mound, and the mage immediately ran to it. "What's wrong Fern, did you find anything?" Ness asked, praying inwardly that the mercenary wouldn't give her a negative answer.
"Yes, the snow has collapsed more here than in other places, which means that there were people in it who had taken refuge and piled the snow aside when they came out. Fern's words were not clear in the howling wind, and were punctuated by snowflakes blowing into his mouth, but Ness understood what the mercenary meant.
"I'll try!" Ness shook off the snow from her cloak and raised her hands, palms open and forward, chanting a spell in her mouth. A fireball appeared between Ness's hands, and the mage slowly pushed the fireball forward, the snow melting quickly in its path.
Seeing that Ness's magic was working, Fern also sped up the speed of snow plowing, and the snow melted by Ness's fireball was easier to plan, and after a while, a small spot of a pitch-black cavern could be seen visible behind the thick snow. With a burst of ecstasy in their hearts, the two looked at each other and continued to dig out the remaining snow, and a cave taller than Ness that could hold at least three people appeared before their eyes.
"Great, Fern!" Ness almost jumped in excitement.
"Come on in, I've got some things to deal with. Fern urged Ness to hurry inside, the blizzard had limited Fern's vision to about ten yards, and anything far away was out of sight. The snowflakes kept whapping at the mercenary's face and body, making it almost impossible for him to open his eyes, and his feet had only been standing for a moment while digging in the snow, and the snow had already covered his feet.
Ness immediately burrowed into the cave, followed by Fern, and then the mercenary drew his sword and thrust it into the crack in the stone at the top of the cave, and the metal and stone collided with each other to burst into golden sparks. Fern then took off his cloak and hung it on his sword, acting as a temporary curtain, and the two finally escaped from the clutches of the blizzard and were able to rest safely in this temporary shelter. A feeling of peace of mind filled Ness's body again.
