Chapter 41: Wet Harbor
The once busy harbor has deserted a lot, and the dockyard is filled with mossy ships with mossy bottoms, no one loading or unloading cargo, only a few idle crew members basking in the sun on the docks. Although the climate in the wet harbor hadn't changed much, Fern could still feel a little colder than before, it was the time when it was too hot to wear just a pair of shorts, and now, Fern was only feeling a little hot and humid in his coat.
Fern found the inn he was familiar with, jumped off the back of the clouds, and led the other horse behind him, on which lay the still sleeping Jalena. As Fern rode slowly into the wet harbor, some of the wandering villagers saw him and ducked to the side in fear. The mercenary was covered in stains, and behind him was an unconscious woman, who dared to kidnap a woman in broad daylight, and swaggered into the wet harbor.
The innkeeper immediately greeted him, and on this day that was even lighter than the off-season, the inn, which had been busy every day, was also idle. "Guest, do you want to eat or stay? I have the best rooms in Wet Harbor, if you ......"
Fern smiled lightly and interrupted the boss. "Joseph, don't you even recognize me?"
The boss was stunned for a moment, and then carefully looked at the mercenary's face, his eyes flashing with surprise. "Fern, is that you? How long have you not been here, I thought something had happened to you, you know, these days are really not peaceful, look here, it's ......" As he spoke, Joseph caught a glimpse of the archmage on the other horse. "Fern, I said that although it is hard to be a mercenary, you can't do anything illegal, although it is depressed here, there are still guards, if they see it......"
Fern waved his hand impatiently. "Okay, okay, this is my friend, we were ambushed on the road, she fainted, don't think about it. β
Joseph looked alarmingly to both sides of the road. "If I didn't know you, I wouldn't have believed you, quick, come in, take that girl. β
Fern took Morena from her horse, put her shoulders on her shoulder, and followed the boss to the second floor under the surprised gaze of the drinker, while Joseph still muttered as he opened the door to the guest room. "This is the best room I've ever had, and I don't usually use it. β
"Know, Joseph, I will repay you. Fern gently laid Morena flat on the soft bed and covered her with a thin blanket. "She's been in a coma for almost a day. β
"Don't worry, Fern, see that her breathing is very steady, she will be fine, I haven't seen her for so long, go down and have a drink with me." Joseph opened a crack in the window to allow air to circulate in the room.
Fern nodded in relief. "But I've got to take a shower first, look at me. β
"Of course, of course. Joseph patted Fern on the shoulder, but the innkeeper had to raise his arm to reach Fern's shoulder.
Although it was dinner time, there were far fewer customers in the tavern than Fern had once visited, and the largest tavern in Wet Harbor had only a few tables with sparse villagers and crew members, and the chanters who used to perform here every night were nowhere to be found. Fern took his glass and drank it slowly, he missed the excitement of this place very much, the smell of wine in the room, the singing of the singers, the loud and dirty jokes of the crew, and now, only the muffled chatter.
"When did this turn out to be like this?" Fern put down his glass and looked at Joseph sitting next to him with a look of pity.
Joseph sighed, and Fern realized that the boss's belly was much smaller than before, and his face had lost weight. "It's not because of this ghost weather, the White River is frozen in the north, and trade with the north is completely cut off, and people don't take boats from here anymore. β
Fern looked around the tavern, where there were only two busy waitress left, one of whom was still resting behind the counter. "The climate will get better, Joseph, and it's going to be as lively as ever. β
"Do you really think so? I have to say, I doubt it's summer, you see, it's summer, and the girls here who should have been hot are wearing only a thin silk coat with a visible skin color, but you see, they are still wearing wool tunics and linen skirts. Joseph lifted his chin at one of the maids.
Fern was also very skeptical of what he was saying, he knew much more than Joseph, he knew that the abnormal weather must have something to do with the Dark Lord, and now it seemed impossible to destroy the Dark Lord, but in front of the uninformed, he had to strike out the attitude of indifference and give them confidence. "I guess next year it will be back to normal, when spring comes again, the ice on the White River will melt, the rising waters will flow on the White River again, the northerners will come here again, laden with all kinds of goods, and the southerners will go north with all kinds of goods, and your inn will be lively again, more lively than ever, people from all kingdoms will gather here, and the best chanters of Alesia will be resident here, and the maids will be busy until the early hours of the next morning, so that you will have a chance to rest, and you, Joseph, my friend, you will pray that the Seven Gods will give you time to sleepγ β
Joseph listened to Fern's description, and his lonely eyes lit up. "Yes, Fern, yes, everything will be fine, everything will be the same as before again, yes. β
Fern smiled and patted Joseph on the shoulder and poured him a glass of wine, and Joseph took the glass and drank it down.
There was the sound of unhurried footsteps on the stairs, and a graceful figure walked this way. "You're finally awake. After the hot bath, Fern was much better, though he had not slept fully for the past three days and two nights, but had only fallen asleep for a short time that morning.
"Where is this, how did we get here?" Morena stood at the table, her face inexplicable, her wet and dry clothes crumpled against her body, and her long tan hair was dull and dull.
Joseph politely stood up and stepped back. "Beautiful lady, please sit down and talk. β
"Thanks, what should I call you. Morena politely returned the salute and sat down slowly.
"I'm the owner of this inn, and you can call me Joseph. Joseph bowed respectfully, his chin almost touching the table.
"Thank you very much, Joseph, this is a hostel that you will never forget, the room was nice and the bed was comfortable. Morena smiled elegantly, but her obviously dirty face was extremely dignified.
Joseph did not lift his head and slowly stepped back. "Thank you for the compliment, ma'am, it's my pleasure to satisfy you, I shouldn't bother you any longer, I'll go and get you some hot tea and fruit. β
Fern looked at Jasmine in surprise. "That's amazing, I guess if Joseph would have considered you a nobleman of some kingdom if you had taken a bath. β
"I was ......" Morena glanced at the flask on the table and poured herself a glass. "I mean, we were on the run in the Black Swamp, how did we get here? And where is this?"
Fern finished the glass and exhaled in a relaxed breath. "This is Wet Harbor, we got rid of mages and flesh beasts, I wanted to wait for you to wake up before continuing on your way, but you have been asleep, and I am afraid that they will catch up with the distance that I have managed to pull away, so I have to tie you to the back of a horse and lead you here, and it turns out that I am right. β
"Indeed, I must have been so tired that I hadn't slept well for two days. Jasmine took a sip of her wine and thought of something. "In this way, you have never rested, and you have been able to survive until now. β
"Almost, in fact, I passed out at dawn this morning, but thankfully we were out of pursuit by then, and I woke up again. Fern blinked hard, his eyes bloodshot.
A hint of worry flashed across Jaminena's face. "I think you should go and rest now, I'll watch here, I'm afraid you're going to faint if you don't sleep again. β
Fern shook his head and sighed hard. "We don't have much time, I'm not sure if they'll come to Wet Harbor too, we managed to get a night last night, I'm sure those mages won't dare to cross the woods at night, but if they start leaving at dawn, they'll be here in the second half of the night. β
"But they didn't know we were going here, and I think they should be waiting for us at the two locations on the edge of the Black Swamp on the map, because they know we're here to investigate there. Jalena even finished the wine in her glass.
"You're right, we can't go to those two places, but I can't risk waiting here for another night, they just need to send a few people here to try their luck, we have tried our best to get rid of them, and you almost died. Fern looked at Jarena's glass with some surprise and refilled it for her.
Morena heard something from Fern's words. "Are you saying we're leaving here today, where are we going?"
"Tarentara Hills, remember the third sign, just south of Tarentara Hills, they must not have thought we were going there. Fern massaged his temples to relieve some of his fatigue.
Morena frowned worriedly. "It's almost a three-to-four-day journey from here to the Tarentala hills, are you sure you don't want to take a break before you set out? β
"You're wrong, I'll be able to get a good night's sleep in no time. Fern looked at Jarena triumphantly. "While you were asleep, I had gone to the docks to find a boat, and the captain had agreed to take us to the southern part of the Tarentala hills, where the White River had not yet frozen, and I would rest on board without slowing us down. β
Molina's face was first surprised, then surprised. "How did you find someone willing to board our ship, I am sure there will be no ship to Doyle now. β
"Not to pick us up, but to send us there. Fern squeezed between his eyebrows, he was on the verge of exhaustion. "I'll explain to you again when I'm on board, that now, you'd better take a shower and eat some of the delicious food that Joseph has prepared for you, and that we must leave before midnight, the sooner the better. β
